I ran across an interesting article on Twitter. It was written to help people to use Twitter in a job search, but it has a lot of good info that anyone could use. It's basicly a 4 week plan to get up and running, all outlined with a step by step approach. Probably old information for most people in the forum, but for some of us........!Embarassed

Thanks for sharing this, Greg.  I'm actually a novice twitterer (or is it tweeter?), so I definitely appreciate this post.

My Tweet name (or twitter name, or whatever....I'm with ya Steve!) is gregparkemusic  Don't forget the "e" and the end of my last name!

I'm still working on this whole twitter thing. I've got the automated tweets set up, I just have to remember to reload it when the tweets run out! I've also got the automatic responce thanking followers for the follow, and also to follow them back. I don't have nearly enough followers yet, but I am seeing results. I have gotten several mailing list sign ups after people went to my squeeze page from twitter, and I usually get a few new followers almost every day, whether I have tweeted or not. The new followers usually come in groups, haven't quite figured that one out yet, and it doesn't seem to be connected with anything I have recently posted/tweeted. I also asked for a review of my CD that is on CD Baby, and got one, but I'm not sure if that came from twitter or facebook, because for a while my tweets also showed up on my facebook page. I didn't like that though,so I disabled it.

To be honest, I never really had much interest in twitter, but as a tool for building my list I will keep using it as long as it continues to work. I think to make it really be anything worthwhile you need way more than a bucket load of followers. If I had to spend 1/2 an hour every day on it I probably wouldn't, but the automation stuff takes care of that. I'll be much happier about the whole twitter thing if and when my follower count is in the thousands instead of the low hundreds!

BTW, thanks for the follow, and I'll follow back....automaticly, of course!

This is the method where I started seeing my list build.  A friend of mine who knows
how to do this set it up for me and I started seeing sign-ups.  Be mindful of your
follows though Twitter doesn't like "aggressive following."

I had him adjust it to where I'm getting "about" a sign-up  a day.

We were also able to target people interested in the genre of music that I do, and
that's why I think it is so effective and why it is so valuable to me.

Yeah, I've heard that about the aggressive following issue. I usually follow about 50 or so new tweeters at a time, that after a week or two if they haven't followed back, I will drop them and follow another batch.

I would be interested to see what your friend did to set up your account. Do you mind me asking how many followers you have that gets you about a sign up per day? That seems like pretty decent return for your effort!

Also, I'm still not sure if I am targeting effectively. I enter a search for people tweeting about artists similar to me, and then follow them. When I check out the list of "Who To Follow" that twitter suggests, they are mostly other musicians it seems. I'm not really trying to target other musicians, just music lovers!

Just wondering if anyone else is seeing this

My twitter account is set up to notify me by email everytime I get a new follower. I have discovered that my notifications don't match up with my actual followers. This morning I recieved 3 new follower notifications, but my follower number only increased by 1. Anybody else having this happen?

Hi Greg,

That's happened to me a few times. I think that could just be that they either decided not to follow you after all and unfollowed or maybe they were spammers and got their accounts deleted before you checked on twitter.

Thanks Annie, that's probably it. I like the idea about the spammers getting slapped!

My guess is that last point is it. By auto-following you are getting a lot fo spammers out there in the mix. (seems like 50% of twitter is just total crap). I'm guessing some people got shut down while at the same time you you are picking up new people.

A couple unrelated twitter tips... Try playing around with hash tags and posting about trending topics. You might pick up some followers just from twitter search.

Thanks John. Uhhhh, Not quite sure what a hash tag is...still pretty green about twitter! And from what I've seen so far, I think your 50% estimate might possibly be just a tad low?Laugh

Hashtag = put a number sign "#" in front of a word like #AcousticMusic.  Do not put spaces
between words in a hash tag, as it is a "tag."  You can look up what popular existing hashtags
are on hashtags.org   The idea is that you put this hashtag in your Twitter post and people
searching on that term may come across your tweet and be able to follow you.

The general guidlines are: don't use more than 2 in a single tweet and don't hashtag EVERY
tweet or it makes you seem spammy.

Ok two things here…

I set up my auto-tweeter to post tweets mid morning, early afternoon, and early evening. I have been mentally keeping track of responses and followers, and by far my best response is coming from tweets posted late afternoon/early evening, west coast time (USA), 5:30-7:00pm. Most of the tweets I get response from are humorous and original. Funny tweets from lists of quotes I found on Google don't do nearly as well. Maybe they are getting overused by others already? I am still just scratching the surface with twitter, and my paltry number of followers certainly doesn't qualify me as an expert, but I thought this trend was interesting. It is enough for me to adjust my twitter strategy. My most successful tweet so far:

I wish my GPS could swear at me in a male voice when I make a wrong turn, then I could punch his F#*$&*g lights out instead of "yes dear"!

I got about 14 new followers with that one, and I think they were all female. I even got a few sign ups through my squeeze page. So far my tweet to follower ratio is running close to 2:1. I slacked off on Twitter for about a month, and I would still get an ocasional follower, but nothing like when I keep my auto tweets going. I have also snagged a few followers on those rare times when I actually go live on twitter. The same things apply then too, early evening and humorous responses to other tweets.

The second thing…While doing some SEO Keyword research, I came across an interesting article. I had a bit of a chuckle when reading some of the comments after the article. Too bad more musicians don't know about MMM2.0 and the Insider Circle! Here's the link:http://mikeking.berkleemusicbl.....g-twitter/

Hmmm, not sure what happened to my last post. It looks like I am running out the door as the print keeps getting smaller and smaller! My cat just ran across the keyboard, maybe she messed up something?

Anyway that article is about a musician who made $19,000 on twitter in just a few hours

That's a great link. Thanks for sharing. I think Amanda Palmer was the one John was talking about in the last interview with Chris.

Like Tim, I get about one subscriber a day from Twitter. I follow enough people to keep my ratio about 1.2 to 1. That is, I am following 1.2 people for every 1 that follows me. I unfollow those that don't follow me after 5 days. So far, this has been keeping me off the "agressive following" and "churning" radar that gets accounts banned.

As far as who to follow, I follow the followers of my "sound alikes". You can go to artists' pages and see who is following them. If someone is following Dave Koz or Boney James, I'm pretty sure they'll like me. I have 3,400 followers, but I didn't do that overnight. SLOW and methodical will win the race. 🙂

I try to keep a mixture of humor, helpful information, interesting quotes, a "slice of my life", and some promo, as my tweet content.

I've built some cool online relationships on twitter. I've gotten interviews, blogs, airplay, and a (free) logo design from those I've met there. Similarly, I've built some great relationships on facebook. One person who is helping guide my steps at the moment has worked with a LOT of big names and is currently managing an artist approaching #1 on Billboard in my genre. I met her on facebook. Neither of us remembers exactly how! LOL! My point is: you will meet people through social networks who can really help you if you don't fall asleep.

I LOVE twitter! Laugh

Congrats on your follower count Charley! I've got a ways to go before you will even see me in the rear view mirror, but I'll get there. I'm seeing on a small scale how this stuff is working. Now I'm working on some sort of a daily and weekly schedule to keep it all going and growing.

It's now 3:20 am and I'm wide awake after working on SEO and reading a bunch of stuff from Chris Rempel. Sleep is such a waste of time!

That is a great link, and yes, Amanda Palmer is the artist I have mentioned quite a few times. I've been watching her for a while. She does some amazing stuff.

@Greg, all that happened with your post was that when you copied the twitter quote, you also copy over the html and it got applied to the rest of the post. No biggy.
