Hi everyone, first post here.

Sorry if this is question has been asked before- I looked around but didn't find it discussed.

A lot of us are giving away a song or two as freebies to spread the word, entice other deals, etc. Just wondering, how do most people choose songs to give away? Do you give your best songs away? The ones you think are the catchiest to new listeners? The ones you thing are the best musically, even if they aren't typically the most popular?

I've avoided giving away my most popular stuff for free, but I guess the counter-argument would be that for relatively unknown newcomers like myself, getting the music "out there" to interested people may entice them to check out more...and I have to trust that the more people hear my music the more they'll like it. On the other hand, if I give away my catchiest tunes, maybe they won't buy the others?

Any of your thoughts and experiences would be really appreciated!

Hi Dan,

I would actually put your best stuff out first. Using John's method for marketing, you're relying a lot on what happens after people sign up to your list.

Basically we're talking about getting people to genuinely like you as an artist and a person, along with the music. It's just my opinion, but if you have an album with 12 songs on it, I would use the best 3 or 4 to get people into your sound, but to also encourage them to share your squeeze page with others, knowing that they just got 2 or 3 really great songs from you on that very same page.

Then even if your other 8 or 9 songs are "just okay" at least you can still sell those songs via the album, especially if people are really juiced over the great ones they got for free and the cool rapport you are building with them.

I'm not so sure you could sell the really great songs , or the album if you put out the "just okay" songs on the front end.

With this approach, you really do want to put your best foot forward. But again this is just my opinion.

I agree! Definitely best song- I don't think you have to give away a ton of them- you can give away 1 for the squeeze page and then see if you can record a cover in a cool way - that intrigues people! i only give away 2 songs in my sales funnel. wishing you the best!
