Hi guys,
Just asking for a little feedback on artists you think I sound similar to. I’ve been running some pretty successful campaigns, but would love to drill down in to an audience and convert my email subscribers in to sales. Essentially looking for the correct subscribers.
The album samples are here:

Just a response with 3 artists would be amazing!
Lovely stuff

Hey Neil,
I like your sound. I don't have any one artist that is coming to mind as a dead ringer for your music, but I get a lot of little bits that reminder me of other things.
The music itself strikes me as a bit reminiscent of Oasis but with a little more of a driving quality. Your voice reminds me a a bit of Rod Stuart.
There's a classic pop star out there that it's reminding me of that I'm struggling to recall.
All of that said, the one thing I would stress from a marketing perspective is that you don't need to worry so much about who you actually sound similar to as much as you need to think about what artists your USP is similar to. After all, it is the experience that your music offers that is key, rather than specifically sounding exactly like someone else. For example, the Clash and the Sex Pistols sound pretty different, but they both appeal to the same audience, people attracted to an anti establishment, rebellious spirit and/or music that is both raw and catchy at the same time.
Hope that helps a little.

Hi John,
Thanks for getting back and indeed the kind words about my music. (The Rod Stewart thing has been mentioned before).
I totally take on board your points regarding USP. I’m seeing pretty encouraging results with sign ups and conversion rates so things are looking good.
I’m working on achieving certain goals and the next one is to improve the sales conversion rate so I guess it’s ensuring the appeal is enough for someone to purchase once in the funnel.
I’ll keep tweaking and analysing.
Keep up the great content bud
EJ x
Glad to hear you're getting good results so far.
I think finding people with an affinity for music that is sonically similar is ideal, and makes some obvious sense. But going back to the USP thing, I think what is most important is that you ask yourself what people will ultimately "get" out of listening to your music. What is that feeling / benefit / experience, and then ask yourself what other artists offer something similar. That is a better way of finding an audience that is likely to invest. I think few people actually seek music that is sonically similar to other music they like. It's really the emotional payoff that they seek.
For example - Bob Dylan and Donovan sound similar, and yet fans of Bob Dylan were famous for hating Donovan. Reason being that what was truly special about Bob Dylan (aka his USP), was completely the opposite of that of Donovan. You could say the same about Guns n' Roses and Poison, Nirvana and STP, and the list goes on and on.
Don't get me wrong, it would make little sense to target people that made Reggae music if you were a Death Metal artist, but you take my point I'm sure.
Hope that helps.
Cheers.

Hey John,
Thanks again for the input.
I’ve been all over the Insider Circle content and obviously checked out your vid on USP which does explain things very well. I’ve tried to tweak things and adapted internal USP to:
“Explosive indie rock and roll. Bringing classic 90’s Britpop bang up to date”
Firstly, what do you think?
And secondly, would you suggest this as good copy/squeeze page text? Or just use as a reference to colour my ad copy?
I’m getting feedback from my audience and subscribers/customers that they like my indie sound, my lyrics and voice.
Cheers
EJ
Hey Neil,
I think what you have is good. It's clear, concise, and accurate.
However, if I have any criticism it's that it's just a little boring. The only thing for me to sink my teeth into is that it's modern Britpop. I think it is actually, and that's a good summary. But your music strikes me as more dynamic than that. I also suspect that there might be a good personal story that can make that more exciting.
When I start off with a client I usually interview them for 1 - 2 hours, and just mine their story for interesting items that I think will be relevant to their audience. I think that could be what is still missing.
So yes, it may be fair to call it modern Britpop, but why should I care about THIS modern britpop artist. Because he's explosive is not enough. Know what I mean?
Any ideas?
I hope you don't mind the direct feedback. I'm just playing the coach role here.

Hi John,
No problem, I welcome the direct feedback - it’s the best way to learn, so please keep it coming.
I totally take the point about it being a tadge boring and doesn’t specifically make a bold claim to help rise above all the other great Britpop/indie/rock and roll bands out there.
Regarding my story, I guess I’ve tried to cover things on my blog post here:
https://www.ejmannmusic.co/its.....-lifetime/
I would like to get some of this content across, but find it hard to make it “zing” in one or two sentences in an ad or squeeze page.
I understand you’re busy, but any feedback on this would be hugely appreciated and indeed any thoughts on its potential as an addition to my USP.
Once again, thanks
EJ
I think the post looks good and reads well. But if I was to pick it apart, it just kind of scrolls past like a list of things that happened. There is nothing overwhelmingly exciting there (keeping in mind, I only scanned it). That said, I wouldn't be surprised if it worked because it's smooth and professional.
I guess I'd restart the conversation by asking you a question... what is cool about Britpop?

Hey again John,
Thanks for taking the time to check out the post. It seems to get good feedback due to the “pacing” of the copy, but I absolutely take the point that it doesn’t get right under the skin of EJ Mann as an entity (I can see tweaks coming 😉)
As for the re-phrased question - really helpful to change the angle of my thinking. To be honest, I’m slightly stumped??
I grew up (and started hitting the pub) when Britpop was at its peak, so I have fond memories of the era. I guess, the cool thing was it’s British-ness. It was the clothes, the swagger, the grit and dirt of the venues, the word of mouth movement and the thought that “normal” lads could just start a band, write some tunes and conquer the scene.
I’m still trying to distill this in to that bite size sentence. Do you have a take on it?
EJ
Hey Neil,
Sorry for the slow reply. Busy few days.
I may be way off base because I just don't know the music that well, but based on your answer to the question, what about something like...
EJ Mann marries the grit and swagger of classic Britpop with a fresh, modern, and insanely catchy collection of indie rock songs".
I'm not saying that's brilliant, but it at least illustrates the goal of the question. get into the mind of the fan and demonstrate that what you offer aligns with the qualities they value and the experience that ultimately seek.

Hey John,
Thanks again for the response, I appreciate you’re a busy fella.
I really like it. You’ve kinda summed it all up perfectly - I think maybe sometimes it’s just a little prod from outside that helps to focus the thoughts.
I’m looking to run another campaign soon and think this will help improve (already pretty good stats) some more.
I’ll give things a tweak and report back
Great stuff
Sounds good Neil, keep us posted on how things go.

Hey John,
Hope you’re keeping safe and well! Thought I’d update re: the above - I know you appreciate hearing about wins and losses.
I adjusted the squeeze page text to add more “experience touch points” as suggested, changed the picture to match the FB ad exactly and have found things to improve quite well. My squeeze sign up form is converting at around 25%-30% so not bad, but room for improvement.
Just to add - the most recent monthly lesson on the emergency LTO was fab! I’m following it to the letter and have seen an improvement in sales for sure. It won’t break the bank, but defo heading in the right direction and covers as cost which is a great foundation to build on.
It’s fair to say - the two combined are genuinely improving my sales, my list and massively raising my chances of re-targeting true fans a little further down the line.
Currently scouring all your older lessons for tips and listening back to every coaching call 😂😂
Loving your work sir!

That's awesome Neil! And thanks for coming back to post your wins. I do love hearing about them 🙂
The forum tends to lend itself more to people's problems than it does wins, so it's always nice to hear about the wins as well.
If you were able to quantify the increase in sales from your LTO I'd love to hear it. For example, the percentage increase in sales from the LTO as compared to a relevant period of time, or some other metric that makes sense.
We can't all make thousands of dollars per promotion, but what is most important is that the needle is moving in the right direction. It's beneficial for both you and me to hear about the actual percentage increase in sales. I often hear from people who make significantly more in one 3 or 4 day LTO than they do all year from music sales or especially streaming.
Just curious if you have any stats like that?

Hey John,
Yeah absolutely - just for some clarity for everybody. I started the MMM strategy in late November 2019 (researched and watched all the content prior to this) plus Music Ads Workshop.
So we’re looking at approx 4 months of solid work up to now . . .
I’ve built my subs list to 1400 (quite proud of that) but it gives context on numbers here - we’re dealing with small figures quite early in the journey.
Sales on average are humble, but consistent - mainly digital. I have a vinyl and other merch that make a cool box set as my up sell, but to be honest this has been slow going.
However, using the Emergency LTO and offering the up sell to a segment of my mailing list that haven’t purchased (so haven’t seen the deal) plus FB ads - I saw a very positive number of sales.
Those 4 days showed a 200% rise in Box Set sales and 50% rise in digital sales. Again, I must state we’re talking 10’s rather than 100’s or 1000’s here, but as you say the needle is going the right way.
In addition, the interactions in both emails and Facebook jumped massively with enquiries and comments which allowed me to connect with potential buyers and solidify the relationships with existing fans.
I understand this strategy is to be used sparingly, but as you said, it can really turbo boost sales when needed and is proof that if you ask for a sale and offer value, you’re much more likely to see a return on your efforts.
Keep up the great content John - it’s priceless for us indie guys 👍
That's awesome Neil, I just sent you an email about your numbers as well. Cheers.

Neil your music is really polished and the songs are great. You have a ton of potential! Here are the resemblances that I hear.
I hope that helps! And best of luck!
Hey Rick,
Thanks for having a listen and taking the time to comment bud.
I get the Rod Stewart thing quite a bit, I’m a fan so 👍
I genuinely haven’t heard of Tom Cochrane or Red Rider (will check out instantly).
Drop a link to your site bud, I’ll check your tunes out 👍💪
Good to chat x
You are welcome.
Tom had hits with Red Rider then went solo (in the '80s). You might know a more recent song "Life is a highway"? I don't think of that song at all for your music. So go deeper into the catalog as a fan would (I would target his audience for sure but look beyond the hits). I typically dislike the hits, as a real fan might. I think this is key for connecting, will see.
BTW the grammy equivalents for those countries are. i.e. Junos in Canada, Aria in Australia, etc. Look up past winners from those awards in your genre?
I'm in my 50's and just starting my musical career as a bucket list (just picked up the guitar for the first time since my teens to put this album together).
Researching this program, taking notes, and just setting up social, etc. I literally just finished the album but need to redo some vocals. I have a ways to go before starting all this. Any help is appreciated.
The website brand is coming together and I have all the unique merch to test, to be ready day one. Then I'll put the landing page back up.

Turn it up loud!
Let me know who the music reminds you of (even if it's a crap band! lol). You can check out the music video as well.
Thanks for your help and interest!
Rick
Hey Ricky,
I love hearing that you're just getting started in your 50s. This idea that people can only find success if they are less than 25 years old is a dated idea that was a byproduct of the old music industry. Non of that matters with direct to fan. So best of luck pursuing your dream!
Can you do me a favor though... We try to keep each forum thread specific to one topic. I don't want your request to get lost in this thread. Would you mind reposting your request for feedback as a new topic?
