Hi,

I'm Brett and I have been at it with MMM 3.0 for just a couple of weeks.

I have been through the course and put most things in place. But, before I hit the GO button on my newly built machine I was hoping to get a few "ducks in a row" or so to speak.

I am really terrible at narrowing down what artists I am similar to. I know I have blues, alt country, retro rock sounds and I am positioning myself as a Folk Singer Songwriter, but I don't know who I sound like and would like to be able to assimilate with fans of ...(insert artist names here).

So far I am saying I sound like CCR, Neil Young, The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. Am I waaaay off? Or am I on the right track?

Can anybody help me please?

Actually, I kind of hear all of those artists that you listed in there. Maybe more of an acoustic CCR thing than the others. There is something in your voice that reminds me of something I can't quite put my finger on. Perhaps Cat Stevens?

Thanks for your reply John.

I have noticed how much effort you put into replying to posts in all areas and I think it's amazing. You keep saying you are lazy in your tutorial videos... but you really are not!!!!!

Appreciate your efforts immensely.

You know your sounds too. I grew up listening to Cat Stevens and was once told I should do a tribute (I kinda looked similar to a young Cat before my long hair started falling out, haha.) I have been told several times by audience members after singing "Moonshadow" that I sounded almost identical to Cat Stevens. I didn't use his name in the description so when I read your post I said to my wife ,"This guy knows his stuff."

John Fogerty has been one of the biggest influences of my musical life and I am so reluctant to even put myself in a ball park with him. Maybe that's why I have had trouble associating myself with another artist in an effort to create an "affinity" group with subscribers. I'm in so much awe of these guys I'm embarrassed to say "I sound like XXXXX".

Anyway, I will go with the artists I listed and add in Cat Stevens.

Thanks again John. Love ya work fella.

Hi Brett,

I agree that you do sound like the artists you've listed, so I think you are on the right track.

Not sure if it helps, but I hear a little Steely Dan, as far as your singing goes, but I'm not sure that's what you would want to target as far as genre.

Jim Croce comes to mind as well.  Gordon Lightfoot maybe?

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your input. All of the artists you mentioned have a cruisy 1970's sound and that mostly fits the overall theme of what I do.

I'm not all that familiar with those artists (probably because I'm an Aussie) to be honest but they can all sing really well so I am happy to be compared favourably with them.

Cheers.

Hey Brett,

My apologies for the slow response. I have been traveling. back now though.

Re: Lazy... Lol, thanks for saying that. The truth is I work my friggin' ass off. But when it comes to perfection in my content I tend to favor forward motion rather that spending a lot of time on little details. But it's quicker to just excuse a rough video, or the cutting of some corner, as laziness 🙂

Re: Cat Stevens. That's awesome. That might tell you something right there in terms of a potential target audience.

Re: Forgety... You don't necessarily need to say you"sound like" any particular artist. And I know what you mean. It's a big claim. All you really need to do is make the conection between your music and some pre-existing passion of your target audience. Referencing an artist is the most straight forward and obvious. But you can do it by pointing out the qualities of that artist and stating that you have those same qualities as well.

For example, some might say that Johnny Cash represents a rebellious American spirit. By leading with a headline that said something like "Do you miss the rebellious spirit of yesterday's American Roots music?"... or whatever... you might immediately tap into the passions of a Johnny Cash fan without saying, I sound like Johnny Cash.

Make sense?
