Wow, this is what Im talking about!

Im really excited to see this particular part of the forum,

because i have been telling major artists to do JVs since day

one and those who have struck deals have done very well -

not only in terms of cross promoting to audiences and making money,

but also in terms of forging relationships and friendships that have

huge future potential.

Im particularly interested in the adoption of using affiliate traffic

to drive sales of tickets and other related music products -

has anyone done this yet?

Hey Hagop. I'm really excited to see if people use this for all it's worth as well. I'm hoping so as it can be really powerful. The hard part is finding other musicians who have their shit together. Hopefully this forum will solve that as it grows.

Funny you should bring up affiliate traffic. That's on my list to work on next. Let's keep each other posted on results.

Having trouble with your marketing? Wish you could have an experienced direct-to-fan marketing expert look over your actual campaigns, music, or content and offer feedback? Or perhaps you’re just looking for a little one-on-one assistance so you can ask questions that pertain to your specific goals and get a second, more experienced, perspective? Hi Hagop.

This is something I'm delving into for the first time too.  Affiliate promotion is a crucial piece to my internet marketing puzzle for a project I'm promoting.  I'm very green in my 'affiliate manager' role, but the upside potential is huge if you can leverage the efforts of people who believe in what you're offering.  Especially if it's win/win for the merchant and affiliate and of course, the buyer.

Anxious to hear more on this topic myself.

Hey, I haven't done anything like this, joint venture with other bands and artist on this level. I am willing to gave it a go and learn from the experience at hand. I believe this particular joint venture helps bands and artist to play gigs and shows they would never have the opportunity and maybe asked back. Keep me posted with this awesome idea.

Bass is all I know and all I want!!!

Count me in too!  This forum and MMM 2.0 are helping me do just that

What would a jam session with Gordon Lightfoot, Collective Soul, and Damien Rice sound like?

Check out Greg Parke and you’ll have a pretty good idea!

So the idea is to have two musicians or bands, that each understand internet marketing and have a mailing list and an affiliate program setup to promote their products. Then they mail each others list and earn income by selling the other band's music? Is that how it works? Ideally this would coincide with an actual show or even a tour together.

The other idea I had regarding affiliate software is to make the band members affiliates with a high commission rate (like 75%) to reward the band member that does the most marketing and conversions on behalf of the band. It could be short term, like just for the launch of a new album or something like that, what do you guys think?

What affiliate programs are people using? I know John mentioned One Shopping Cart, and Ejunkie seems pretty newbie-friendly (at least in terms of start-up cost - what else is are you guys using/considering?

I coughed up the cash for post affiliate pro 4.

It tracks by cookies, referrer id and referral url.

So far I'm finding it to be quite easy to use once you get used to the interface.
Affiliates can customized reports as well as set up their domain so that all traffic they refer from their own website will be tracked to them.

However it's important to keep in mind, that if you go this route, you'll have to pay all of your affiliates yourself, whereas clickbank will pay your affiliates for you.  This means more to keep up with.

I haven't had any tracking issues yet, so I'm pleased with it.

I think the other advantage of clickbank or ejunky is that there is a level of credibility that makes potential affiliates comfortable.  There was a product that I was researching recently and I found an affiliate vendor but when I went to their affiliate program the interface was really shoddy and was behaving strangely.  So of course I bailed.  Clickbank is Clickbank.  Everybody has heard of it and it works well.

Here's a music related affiliate idea I've had kicking around.  The obvious is to hook up with other bands and cross promote CD's etc to their lists.  A variation that I think could really work well - especially across genres - is for the two musicians/bands who working together to record a cover of one of each other's songs.  Then they can go to their list and say "check out our cover of a cool song by <band name>.  They are great, you should check out their CD <preview page w/affiliate link>"  or  "Our friends <band name> covered our song <song name> and they did a great job! They have a new CD and you should check it out. <preview page w/affiliate link>"

In addition to adding value to the partnership, it seems like it would really lend itself to youtube, and other sharing services where people would naturally click through to find out what the other band was all about.

The reason I think this could work across genres is because a) most people like a variety of musical styles and b) a lot of people dig things like country versions of punk songs, or lounge versions of metal songs etc.  I've even got a CD by Luther Right and the Wrongs called "Rebuilding The Wall" that is a bluegrass version of Pink Floyd's The Wall.

Of course the key to making that work would be finding partnerships where the parties really dig each other's music, and so it's fun.  If it works it could lead to other collaborations and kind of mutually snowball.

Just thinking outloud, there are a lot of directions something like this could go with the right partners.

Yes, that's basically the idea. Although it doesn't have to be with an affiliate link. It could just be a email blast swap so that both parties can grow their list, with sales being left out of it. I think that's the easiest way for most musicians to get going with a strategy like this.

http://www.digitalaccesspass.com is another one that I like. They are a bit expensive but they seem to be able to most of what 1shoppingcart can do for a one time fee.

Pretty interesting idea Daniel! There is a band in my area that did a cover of one of my songs a while back, and it went over very well. My version had a male voice for the lead vocal, they had a female, I used a synthesized pan flute for the hook, they used a cello. My main instrumentation was mainly acoustic guitar and bass, they used acoustic guitar, accordian,  violin and cello. It was really cool do hear the same song done with such opposites. They only did it live and never recorded it (that I know of!!) The only strange thing was when their guitar player tried to tell me how to play the guitar part..... I just looked at him, smiled and said "yeah, I know....."

Your idea of musicians recording and cross promoting each others stuff has some real possibilities. Anybody else find this intersting?

The "cover swap" idea is fun.  It's like, "Hey, let's swap covers... what's your best effin' song?"  LOL!

Seriously though, if you had some band you loved from outside of your own genre, it would be a cool, slick, back-door kind of affiliate referral... assuming some of your own fans happen to like the original genre of the song you cover.  Refer people and let the other artist's squeeze page do the work!

Hell, you don't even have to have a studio version for this to work.  You could just do it live, have someone record it, post the video on your own website and have a call to action to "Check Out The Band Who Actually Wrote This Song-- Click Here!"

Or you could link directly to the itunes page for the original track you covered so that people can buy the side-by-side comparison.  However to be tracked for the referal, the artist would need to be selling the track through their own website or be using a platform that has an itunes plug-in.

Fun idea though...  🙂

Yeah, I'm thinking live recordings are in reach for most people. On the other hand many of us have some form of makeshift recording ability with GarageBand or Audacity, and I'm sure more than a few of us have some sort of home studio set up. One could get pretty creative without shelling out money for studio time. I think the more oddball it is the better.

If you're doing a JV where you're offering a cut of sales to your partner, how do you track the sales? Do you set up a separate squeeze page and aweber list? How do you prove to potential JV partners that you'll be accountable for the sales they generate so they're comfortable with the agreement?

You use an affiliate tracking service or script. I use 1shoppingcart usually but there are many, ranging from $pretty cheao up to $100 a month. If you just want to do something with paypal you might take a look at http://rapidactionprofits.com/ but I like the look of http://digitalaccesspass.com/ a bit better.

Disclaimer: I haven't used the last two. i only know them by reputation.

Here's something for $27 that looks pretty cool: http://cloak-and-tracker.com/d.....links.html

according to the copy, you can create remote views for JV partners.

ever heard of it?

Hi John,

I've seen digital access pass before... to me it looks like an interesting alternative to wish list. What's the difference and why would I need both?

Are you saying that in JV partnerships where you're offering a cut of sales, the JV partner becomes an affiliate? Does the software create a back office for them to track their unique link's sales? I feel like we skipped a few steps.

Many thanks!!

Julianna

Not familiar with the first service you mentioned. As for the DAP, I have only looked at it, haven't actually used it but I think it's just structured differently and it can do more things. I like Wishlist as they really specialize in membership sites. But the affiliate tracking in DAP makes it appealing.

I haven't used that aspect of it, but one would assume that affiliates can create accounts and login to check their stats. That's a question for their support.

Just thought I'd check back in on this thread. Has anyone had success cross promoting with other artists? This is really an untapped opportunity for artists who are focused on building their mailing lists.
