Alligator Records is probably scratching their head a little bit.
To shift gears, in your experience have you seen many musicians who are men target female artist's fans? Or vice versa for that matter?
Hey Brian,
Yeah, I'd imagine it's a bit of an embarrassment for them that the highest point of her career took place just after leaving the label. But who knows.
In terms of targeting: That's an interesting question. I haven't really thought about it before but I suppose I haven't come across it all that much. I guess I've seen women target male artists a lot more than the other way around. At the risk of touching on a politically incorrect topic, I suppose it makes sense. With many female artists, the simple fact that they are female, seems to be part of the brand. Weather that is their doing or not. You don't see that as much with men. But as such, there would be a greater chance for a disconnect if a male artist was targeting a female artist who's fans connected with the fact that she was female. At least that's my feeling on the issue.

Hey John,
That was instinctively my feeling too, thanks for venturing out to answer that one.
On another note - I was listening to a past coaching call and you mentioned something about "cloaking" a link (?). I think it had to do with the idea of someone typing a URL or clicking on a link that takes them to a different page. I got the sense that it was different than a redirect in that cloaking disguises the URL of a redirected page altogether (?).
Im interested in how to implement cloaking. I know most people use it for their homepage, but I'm interested in using it in a different sense - I have a blog post with a lot of comments, but if I no longer liked the URL of the page., I'd like to change it but keep the same page with all the same comments. Is this possible, and would that be cloaking or something else? Thank you!
Hey Brian,
Cloaking, or "masking" is when you redirect a URL to another URL but have the browser display the original URL instead of the link they redirected to. This is often used when promoting affiliate products. I haven't done it in a few years but when I used to do it a lot I did it by buying a cheap .info domain through godaddy and setting it up in my dashboard. The way I have spoken about applying this tactic is so that you can have one website but send your traffic to what appears to be a top level domain, thus removing the concern that someone will look at their browser, remove the page extension, and then just bypass your squeeze page and go to the home page of your site. It;s not really necessary, but it's something one can do.
If you simply want to change the URL of a page then I would go and install a redirect plugin. Then I would simply edit the slug of your url right in the page editor. Then go into the redirect plugin and create a 301 redirect that pointed the old URL to the new one. Depending on the plugin you might need to create an empty page using the old url in order to create the redirect.
That all make sense?

Thanks John that all makes total sense. I'm sure that when I do it I'll see everything you're talking about pop up and I'll know what to do with it by what you said.
Another house cleaning question - how do I replace the red arrow with an album image? Also, do you have any thoughts as to the wisdom of doing that?
Hey Brian,
To switch out the code you just edit a bit of code and replace the image. Conversely you could rename your new image and replace the old arrow. I'll have Steve pop by shortly with the specifics.
This is yest another thing that you need to test. An arrow works well, but am alternative graphic can as well. It just depends how people respond. I personally like something that draws a visitors attention to an action, so if you use an album icon you might also add an arrow such as I do here: http://www.johnoszajca.com.

Hi Brian,
Steve here. Sorry for the delay. I actually replied to this days ago, when John asked me to, but for some reason it didn't post.
Here's the deal with changing the arrow graphic.
First, your album image needs to be the exact same size as the existing arrow image. To find out these dimensions, right click over the arrow image and select "view image". Your browser should tell you the height and width of the image.
When you are saving your custom image, it needs to be called "arrow.png" because that's the image file that the MMM theme tries to locate, to display in the sidebar.
Connect to your site via filezilla. Then navigate to "wp-content/themes/mmm/img"
Upload your arrow.png image into the "img" folder. You'll will be ask if you wish to replace the existing file. Say yes. You should be all set from there.
Let us know how you make out.
Thanks Steve! Another tech./marketing question - I have a music video/single that I'm telling the local press is being released on a certain date. Part of me wants to run it earlier just so I can make that custom audience of 25% watchers who are targeted folks and real fans of my music, before it gets to any of my friends who like my personal page. Is there any way to do that quietly without alerting folks that I "released" it before said date?
Hey Brian,
The custom audience will automatically update to include your friends once they see the video, so there is no way to really do that aside from creating two videos, which I probably wouldn't do. Having friends watch it isn't going to throw things off much so long as you have a substantial percentage of people watching the video that are not friends. And we'd probably be surprised to find out that most of our friends are not watching much of our videos anyway, if they don't truly like the music. In short, I wouldn't sweat it too much.
