Hello John and Fellow Musicians,
I'm working my way through MMM 4.0 and the Copywriting for Musicians. Thank goodness for the copywriting class, John, It's really helping me understand MMM 4.0 better.
I am trying to hone in on who I sound like and I have received so many different suggestions from friends and family, that I thought perhaps some fellow musicians could help me narrow it down?
So far I have gotten, Barry White( I really don't think it's this one), Rick James, Luther Vandross, Earth, Wind, & Fire, Curtis Mayfield and my daughter is suggesting Bruno Mars.
My sound is a mix of Funk, Pop and R&B.
Here's the song I am going to give away on my squeeze page: https://soundcloud.com/deryo/0.....time-deryo
If you could take a listen and let me know what you think, that'd be great.
I'm leaning towards, maybe James Brown Fans, because I saw on Facebook insights that fans of James Brown are very eclectic in their music tastes.
Thanks in advance,
Derrick
Hey Derrick,
Would you think I was crazy if I said a "modern Ray Parker Jr"?
I actually do get the Barry White thing. I don't know if I think that's the best fit, but I get it. You have a smooth, deep voice, and your music is funky. It's just not as "Barry White-ish" as Barry White is.
I also think Herbie Hancock is an obvious targeting option because of your affiliation.
Unfortunately funk is not a genre I am that well versed in so I'm probably not the best guy to make a call like this.

I don't necessarily think that is the right targeting call. It was just a quick thought about what your music reminded me of. But he is more R & B and you are more funk. And his Ghostbusters association would probably throw that way off. Unfortunately I don't know the funk genre that well. Have you tried using the audience insights tool?

Hi John,
I just wanted follow up with you, based on the feedback you gave me from the week 3 live session.
So I used the Facebook Audience Insights tool and you were right, Ray Parker Jr. doesn't have a fanbase outside of Ghostbusters. I picked Lionel Richie fans because based on the page likes their music taste are very eclectic. They liked Barry White and Luther Vandross, two artist who I have been compared to. But I took your point about Lionel being "too pop" for me and when back to the drawing board.
I tried to narrow it down to artists who have a blend of Funk and R&B. What do you think about one of these: Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder or Prince?
Thanks in advance for your feedback. I am learning so much. I really appreciate the time you and your team put into everything.
My pleasure Derrick,
Marvin Gaye and Luthor Vandrose are interesting. Possibly a bit too old school, but possibly not.
My feeling is that the fan base of Stevie Wonder and Prince is not the same fan base as yours.
Try running Barry White in audience insights tool and see what comes up in terms of other artists that his fans like.
I also wonder about Isaac Hayes. He is a bit of an old school reference but he has that laid back R & B thing without being so barry-white-ish.
Do I have the wrong impression of your music? My impression was that your stuff is also laid back R & B but with a bit more funk.. Am I remembering wrong?
I also don't want you to feel overly stressed about this. You only need a few target audience ideas to begin testing, and you basically have that. You could target Herbie Hancock, Barry White, and something more funk oriented like Rick James and just see what happens. You don't have to spend a lot to start testing, and at least it will give you some data. In a blind test run like that I am usually focused on click prices rather than subscribers, at first. The goal being, to just see ho responds and get you a bit closer to understanding your audience. As little as $20 in ads might get the info you need.

Thanks, John. Everyone that hears my music has a different take. So I wouldn't say you're off base. I think Isaac Hayes may also be a little too old school. I checked Facebook and his audience is under 100,000. My main concern is making sure I find the right audience, but I guess I wont know until I start testing. I'll let you know how it goes once I have some numbers from my funnel.

Sounds good. Keep us posted.
