Hello John and fellow musicians-
I'm trying to narrow down who I sound like and my target audience. I thought perhaps some fellow musicians could help me narrow it down. All comments would be most appreciated. This is a link for my album page https://anthonyrufomusic.com/album/
I'm a Guitarist/singer-songwriter and while most of my music has vocal arrangements, I also do Instrumental music in the style of Joe Satriani/Steve Vai...the instrumental tracks on the album Passionate Presence are 4, 10, and 12. Any input on those would also be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance-
Anthony
Hi Anthony,
Wow! That is an incredibly diverse album. On a song by song bases I hear hard rock, jazz, 80's sax rock, Beach Boys-like pop, doo wop, blues, metal, epic soundscape ballad, and progressive rock. That is one of the most diverse albums I've ever heard.
That makes it a bit challenging.
However, the through-lines for me are the fact that you are a technically proficient player (though I hesitate to focus too much on guitar since you also feature sax pretty prominently on some songs), and a sort of 80's pop/rock kind of sound/approach. You don't sound anything like these artists, but it reminds me of artists like Huey Lewis, more for the approach than the sound.
But I think the people that will respond to this are people that are (on average) 45 and up, and who like technically proficient players like Satriani, and tasteful 80's pop rock artists. That's my take based on a quick sample of each song. I'm sure others might have totally different takes, and ultimately you know better than me as I only just took a quick 15 second sample of each song.
However, when it comes to targeting, it is more important that you get solid on your USP more than just your sound, since it is going to be how you describe what is unique about YOU and your music that attracts people (at least initially), more than how it sounds. But of course you do want your USP to also be consistent with the way the music sounds.
Hope that helps.

That definitely helps-Just hoping it's not so diverse that I can't hone in on my tribe....It's been a challenge....I was even kicking around marketing my music in two ways....the Instrumental technically proficient side my music....Satch, Vai type.... And the vocal side...with another demographic? Just don't want to spread myself too thin if possible. My current niche for my music is Melodic Rock/Jazz Fusion featuring Odd Metered Rhythms and exotic scales. I'll keep working on this as I get further into the course.
Much appreciated!
Anthony
I think it can be done as is, but it will be more challenging than most. Rock/Jazz fusion is good, but there is a pop quality that takes it in a different direction than the more progressive stuff I usually think of when I think of Rock/Jazz fusion. But all you can do is put your best foot forward and try something. If it doesn't work, regroup and try something else.
Best business advice I know: "Ready, Fire, Aim".

Hey Anthony,
Nice Parker
I just listened to the samples. I agree with John, it's very diverse. One question I'd like to ask you is, what's the average length of the tracks? If it's 5min+, I'd definitely label it Prog Rock. And even if not, I'd definitely try to target fans of old school prog rock bands such as Rush, Yes...
In any case, I think John gave you the best advice : “Ready, Fire, Aim”. It's very easy to overthink these things for ages, sometimes it's just better to fail earlier 🙂
Keep us in touch! As we have somewhat similar genres, I'm interested to know how it's gonna work 🙂
Cheers,
Darknight
Always better to fail earlier 🙂

Parkers are some of the most original shapes out there. They have a lot of personality. I'm a BC Rich guy, but I always loved Parker guitars!
I've recently created a post here in this forum about my music, you can check it out here : https://www.mmmanifesto.com/in.....should-be/
Cheers mate!
