Hey all, I’m Sven Sundberg, a newb, and I am having a significant amount of difficulty figuring out which artists my music sounds like.  I have a conversion rate of 23% on my squeeze page, but I’m just not getting enough of the right kind of traffic to it.  Learning who I sound like will help me with Facebook ad targeting, so I’ll be eternally grateful if some of you can give me some feedback!

Here’s a link to a webpage that will stream five of my songs from my latest CD: http://www.svensundberg.net/sa.....timacy-cd/

All the songs vary in style, but for the most part my music falls under the category Ambient Pop Instrumental.  It’s definitely a niche market.  I have used the following artists in targeting my ads:  Sarah McLachlan, Kitaro, Joshua Radin, Cary Brothers, David Foster, Hall & Oates, Thirteen Senses, Bill Ricchini, Tame Impala and Owl City.  But I’m fairly sure that my music isn’t quite similar enough to most of these, and targeting these artists in Facebook ads hasn’t driven much traffic to my squeeze page.

Thank you so much for your help!  And I look forward to getting to know y’all.

Hey Sven,

The tracks I listened to have a sort of easy listening / ambient kind of quality. I'm not very familiar with those genres so no particular artists come to mind. But you might benefit from Googling things like "list of easy listening artists" and sampling their music on iTunes until you find something that is a match. You could also try surveying your list to see if your existing fans have any common opinions of what your music sounds like.

Question though... You said that you are converting at 23%, which is pretty decent. What target audience is converting at 23%? That would certainly indicate that you are on the right track with that target audience. Is the issue that you are not gettings ales or is the issue that you are just not getting enough traffic?

Having trouble with your marketing? Wish you could have an experienced direct-to-fan marketing expert look over your actual campaigns, music, or content and offer feedback? Thank you for personally replying, John!  I know you're way busy, so I appreciate the time you took to listen and reply.

I targeted "ambient music" with a Facebook ad, and I received 350 clicks and 79 conversions, and after going through the autoresponder email series, 5 sales were made (8% of conversions).

When I targeted "easy listening" there were a handful of clicks with no conversions.  I've also tried targeting specific artists:  Kitaro, Sarah McLachlan, Joshua Radin, each in separate Facebook ads, and I received clicks but no conversions, except for maybe 5 conversions on Kitaro (less than 10%).

Although my squeeze page is converting well (http://www.svensundberg.net/fr.....-track-sq/), I can't seem to drive enough traffic to it, although 8% of the conversions have resulted in sales, which could also be higher.  Also, since instrumentals have no language barriers, I have targeted more countries than just the English-speaking world.

My latest album is a collection of love songs "Intimacy: A Collection" and it is a bit on the soft side, perhaps easy listening for this album alone, but I believe more ambient than easy listening.  My body of work comprises of more pop/rock and adult contemporary instrumentals, or as I refer to it, Ambient Pop Instrumental.

I will definitely take your advice and google "list of easy listening artists" and sample their music for a match.  I have already surveyed my list, but there was limited response with a few comments that said something like "I don't know of anyone who makes music that sounds like yours."

I'll keep pressing on until I stumble across the right audiences!  Thanks again for your advice, John.

Very cool. If you are converting at 8% to sales then you definitely have the right targeting. That's really solid. I see what you mean though. I only get an audience of 8,000 people when I try to create an audience in the US for "ambient". Have you tried using the audience insights tool to find other ideas? You can find "audience insights" from the drop down in your ad dashboard. Then just enter "ambient music" or whatever the precise interest is that you had success with and then click on "page likes" from the results options.

You can also click "suggestions" from within he ad dashboard in the interests field. It wont be the same results as those you find in audience insights, but both might be helpful.

The thing with ambient is that it's usually connected to music that has more of a trance or electronic feel to it, whereas I don't see your music as having that same sound. But you can't argue with our results, so all you can do is try a few other audiences that are very similar to the one that is working for you. I'd say audience insights is the first place to start looking for ideas.

Thank you again, John!  I've used audience insights, but it doesn't seem to provide much useful information.  I'll enter more terms and artist names there to see if I can get better results.  And I didn't know about the "suggestions" feature, I'll definitely try that out!

I have an aversion to the term "easy listening" because, although my most recent album might fit that description, my previous albums do not.  To hear what I mean, listen to tracks from my album "Crystal Clear" at this link, particularly the two tracks The Valley of Voe and Light You Up: http://www.svensundberg.net/do.....o-for-one/

I did google similar artists in the Ambient Music, Easy Listening, Downtempo, Easy Pop and other genres and came up with a list of about 20 artists that could have similar music, I'll have to listen to them more.  The only artists I recognized were Yanni and Tangerine Dream.  Definitely a niche market!

I appreciate your help.

Hi Sven,

Steve here.  I'm not if this has crossed your mind, but I can somewhat hear a bit of Sting in your music, without the vocals of course.

I don't know if you'd get any additional traction there, but thought it might help.

Great feedback, Steve!  Now that you mention it, I can kinda hear a little of Sting's backing music in some of my songs too.  Thanks for the heads up!  I'll definitely give that a try.

My best to you,

Happy to help. It sounds like you're on the right track. It's just a matter of using the tools we have and digging until you find a few gems that convert consistently and well. Eventually you can try lookalike audiences, once you have a decent list to import.
