Hi everybody in the Insider Circle,
I'm taking advantage of John's special offer of joining the club for 2 weeks and I'd like to know what do you think about my music. I didn't start selling my music yet, but I'm in the process of doing it, so I could really use an honest, objective opinion.
And since I don't want to take too much of your time, please be kind to listen to 2 of my songs and answer these:
- 2 things you liked about my music
- 2 things you don't like
- and the really important question for us all: "Would you buy such stuff?"
First song is on Jango:
The other one is on YouTube, with a video shot by myself on a dirty beach in Japan.
Enjoy and let me know your opinion! Thank you for your time.
Iuli (a.k.a.: "mi")
Hi Iuli,
Not sure if this is the answer your looking for or not, but what makes me buy music is not usually just the tunes. There are plenty of cool tunes out there. Rather, what makes me buy is the artist's ability to get my attention. I buy into "the lifestyle" more than the songs themselves. But of course it is the songs that make the difference between me just buying the album and leaving it on my shelf forever vs actually becoming a life long fan. As an independent artist, this is where your email messages come in.
Funny enough, the last album I purchased was an artist I started watching from a marketing perspective because she wrote great blog posts and sent really interesting emails. I got so pulled in by the emails that I eventually became a fan and bought her latest album. I almost certainly would not have done that if her personality and "lifestyle" had not got my attention.
Hope that makes sense as a round about answer.

Hi,
Interesting approach, John.
But in this case this post about "Sharing your music " doesn't make much sense. I mean, just to hear somebody saying: "Hey, I listened to your music. Nice tunes" (as seen in other topics) doesn't help the artist much, in my opinion.
Otherwise, I can agree with you that many times we buy the lifestyle, the relationship, rather then the music itself.
Cheers,
Iuli (a.k.a. mi)
Hi Iuli,
Sorry, I'm not totally clear what you're saying with "But in this case this post about "Sharing your music " doesn't make much sense. I mean, just to hear somebody saying: "Hey, I listened to your music. Nice tunes" (as seen in other topics) doesn't help the artist much, in my opinion."
I thought you were asking for feedback about whether or not people "Would buy such stuff?". I only meant to try to make the point that any competent artist can sell their music by connecting with their fans directly and that the tunes themselves were only part of the process.
I'm sure you'll do great 🙂

Hi John,
What I meant was related to the presentation of this post:
"In this forum it's all about YOU. Want a second opinion on what track makes the best single? Want feedback on your website? This is the place to share your material with your fellow musicians and get the feedback you need."
So , as a begginer, I could have used some second opinions about my tracks from other most experienced artists. That's why I had asked some very specific questions in the body of my first messagge. And I was surprised that nowhere on this post I saw any opinions about specific elements of somebody's music.
Of course, you answered the last (and probably the most important one) and I really appreciate this. Your point of view definetly makes sense: the tracks are just a part of the process and the selling is more a matter of how you can relate with the others. But this (in my opinion) undermines the topic of this post.
Maybe it's just me splitting hairs, but hope it makes sense now.
All the best!
Hello iuli mai,
So you ask :
- 2 things you liked about my music
- 2 things you don't like
- and the really important question for us all: "Would you buy such stuff?"
- 2 things you don't like
Well, one thing I'm not crazy about is the pitch of your vacal that is sometimes off...
Second, I'm not crazy about the mix of the first song either. I feel as if all of the band is in a room (wet) and the vocal is in another one (dry). The vocal is too much in the face, not enough with the band to make it a ballanced blend. Mixed differently, you still could hear the lyrics and you would feel more the energy of the whole band... Assuming that you would have a real drumer, but even then, a drum machine mixed with real instruments with a fat sound, it would be more real to me. The lyrics are good, but a warmer sound would make me believe more in your story, it would reach me through my body so to speak.
- 2 things you liked about my music
I like the general mood of your music.
You got a nice build up in the first song (Jango), I like it.
- and the really important question for us all: "Would you buy such stuff?"
I do have an issue with anything that's out of pitch. I do listen to Santana, Ozzy Osbourne and Neil Young... They're all off pitch somewhere... So yes I could buy this stuff as you say, but it is like John said, it is a matter of "a way of life". I need to believe in your story in order to buy it. The sound is really important to me. The energy and the feeling of the musicians got to make me vibrate as well... When you get to know someone (marketing), you start to see things differently and then your perspective change and you may then feel pulled toward the energy of the person or group of music and decide to take action and buy the CD even if you wouldn't have done so in the first place.
I hope I'm clear... English is my second language and I don't speak it everyday. I hope that my point of view helps you. I mean to make constructive statements, so I hope that you'll feel fine with what I said.
Wish you the best! 🙂

Hi Isabelle,
Thank you so much for your detailed feedback. I supposed it took you a lot of time to listen and to write down your opinions, so I really appreciate the effort. And you pointed out some things that I weren't aware of.
Once again thank you and all the best to you, too.

Can you share the name of the artist? I think I'd like to get on her list.

Amanda Palmer. She's great.

Thanks. I just set up a new gmail account strictly for signing up for artist email lists (starting with many forum members.) I'm doing it for research purposes, but I'm finding some awesome music as well!

That's really smart. I have an email address like that as well. I login months after the fact and search the email history of one particular person and I can see their entire sales process at one glance. I also occasionally buy products just to see the upsell process and post customer email sequence (if there is one).
