Hello All,

I'm trying out Reverb Nation's Promoting tools to advertise my squeeze page. It uses Banner Ads on top music websites. My ads are currently on approval, which can take up to 2 business days. I recently tried out CD Baby's new ad feature, which is similar. It was basically a disaster. More details can be found on my other post "Ads by CD Baby: Brand New Service" on the "Music Marketing General Discussion Forum". So, far I have found Reverb Nation to be far superior to CD Baby, but not as good as Facebook. I will have complete details on views and clicks once the campaign is over.

Reverb Nation allows you to advertise your own website using banner ads. Just paste whatever URL you want to advertise into the appropriate box. You can use their banner ad generator to design your ads, or you can upload your own. If you upload your own you need to create 2 different sized ads. The first needs to be 728x90 and the other needs to be 300x250. Image file types accepted are jpg, png or gif, and the file size needs to be less than 40kb. I had to lower the quality of my jpg images down to 90% in order to meet that requirement. Keep in mind that they will ad a small watermark of their company name onto the lower right section of your image. I will include images below of the ads I sent be approved. Minimum payment is $35 a week for 125,000 impressions. The payment automatically renews every 7 days if you don't turn it off.

I'll keep you posted on how this goes. Thank you for your interest!

The ads have been approved and have been running for one day.

So far, I've gotten 3,280 impressions on 502 different websites, and have received 1 whole click. That's a click through rate of 0.03% at a cost of $5.00 per click. I really hope that improves over the next 6 days.

I just ran a similar ad using a Facebook boosted post and got a click through rate of 1.8% at a cost of $0.21 per click. Facebook, of course, will always out perform a banner because of targeting and it being more visible in their timeline. But still, I was hoping for a better performance from a banner ad.

One nice feature is that they give you a complete list of all the websites that your ads were posted on. CD Baby didn't do that. Reverb Nation said the following about who sees the ads: "Your ads are targeted to music fans that have been determined to like your genre of music. This includes people who have visited your ReverbNation and Facebook pages, plus fans who like artists similar to you."

Here's hoping that the stats will improve.

Yeesh, that's not so good. But not surprising. Banner ads can work but I think you'd do better to find the right sites and approach them directly. I'd go after Final Fantasy sites rather than music sites in your case.

Having trouble with your marketing? Wish you could have an experienced direct-to-fan marketing expert look over your actual campaigns, music, or content and offer feedback? Or perhaps you’re just looking for a little one-on-one assistance so you can ask questions that pertain to your specific goals and get a second, more experienced, perspective? John,

I was hoping the Reverb Nation version would perform better than the CD Baby equivalent. I guess not. At least now I've tried it and we can tell people to avoid it.

Yes, I really need to find some more appropriate sites. At least video game themed sites, and hopefully some Final Fantasy sites. I'll have to watch your lesson on banner advertising again to remind myself how to do it. What was that website again, buysellads.com?

Hey Doug,

Yeah, you really want to lazer target people. I would stick with JUST Final Fantasy sites rather than broader video game sites.

BuySellAds.com is a banner ad network, yes. But because what you are looking for is so specific you might just reach out to sites individually. Find a few profitable sites and you might have some JV partners on your hands as well.

Here are the results,
My custom made banner ad was displayed on 2,020 different sites by Reverb Nation and had 21,535 impressions. I got a whopping 8 clicks! That's a click through rate of 0.04% at a cost of $4.38 per click. I'll have to borrow the words of Steve Jobs and say that this was insanely not great! When I cancelled my ad, Reveb Nation asked me why, so I told them. We need the freedom to choose our own targeting, because obviously their targeting is way off. The same ad performed way better on Facebook. My CD Baby generated ad actually out performed my custom Reveb Nation ad, which was a surprise.
So, don't be tempted by these banner advertsing offers from CD Baby and Reverb Nation. Even though they advertise on Pandora, You Tube, Rolling Stones, etc. Create your own banner ads and find appropriate websites to advertise on yourself. Either through buysellads.com or websites you find yourself through your own research.
