I'm just starting to try and drive some free traffic by posting articles and linking to my blog etc.

Could just be bad luck and/or rookie mistakes but the first two articles were not approved for publication.

I posted the below article on HubPages and it was removed due to the link to my home/squeeze page at the bottom, but it looks like they have a policy where once you've had five featured articles you can post stuff that doesn't strictly adhere to their rules, so I reposted the article without the link and it was featured. My plan with this site is to post the required five articles minus the links and then add the squeeze page link back to any subsequent article -

http://studholmemusic.hubpages.....lectronica

I also posted the below link to reddit - (subreddit = https://www.reddit.com/r/Music)

http://www.studholmemusic.com/.....ource=news

and got this in response -

Intelligent dance music VS Stupid dance music
byu/iokuyt inMusic

Can't really see a way round that one, looks like they want to charge for this kind of post - has anyone used Reddit as a source for posting this kind of article?

And does anyone have any good general tips re: which sites are good starting points to post on and if there's any content in the above articles which I should avoid in order to maximise my chances of publication?

I'm currently quite slow at creating the pieces - takes me about 90 minutes - so can probably only do a couple a week until I get faster.

Apologies if this is covered somewhere else and thanks in advance.

Nick

Hey Nick,

That's one of the issues with teaching this stuff... These sites and their policies are changing all the time. Driving free traffic is still very much a viable approach, but I personally find it so time consuming and frustrating (for the reason's you are describing) that I stopped doing much of it some time ago. I used to rely on free traffic exclusively, but I focus entirely on paid traffic these days.

If your time is limited but you're a decent writer, I'd focus on trying to land guest blog posts. They are harder to get, but tend to pay off in a bigger way. However, if you are able to get your stiff on reddit, that may be a good way to go as well. I see them in the SERPS a lot lately. However, I have not dealt with them in a while.

Good luck and let us know if you start seeing decent traffic from any one particular source.

Thanks John

Will try out the guest blogging avenue.

I'd like to move into paid advertising but I think I'll need the free traffic to make things work at this point. I don't have much in the way of an upsell, as I don't play live or anything like that and only have this album and an older EP (which I give away free as part of the limited time offer in the follow up series) I will have a another album good to go but it won't be for 6 months or so.

Please could I ask about subscriber value? My album is selling for roughly $10 so If the squeeze page is converting at 25% then for every 100 people I should get 25 subscribers, of which I should be looking to make 5% sales - currently - $12.50 does that mean my current subscriber value is 50 cents? If so, as I understand it will be hard to make those numbers work.

I will run some test campaigns just to see what the interest is like and get used to the process, but not sure paid traffic will be viable for me at the moment as my main source. I'd be happy running at no profit just to see my list grow and was hoping I'd be able to generate enough free traffic to bolster the subscriber value.

Will add updates re: traffic when I get some, the hub pages article has had 50 views and has been up from the 9th sep, so looks like that could be a good source once I've got past the five featured article limit.

Really enjoying the process anyway 🙂

Cheers

Nick

Hey Nick,

Totally fair concerns. Free traffic is completely doable. It just takes time and patience. I used to rely on it completely and literally generated a few million dollars in online sales with nothing but free traffic. But things have gotten harder and harder and I love the simplicity and scalability of paid advertising. But your concerns are legitimate and not everyone can make it work. But if you're getting views on your articles then that is definitely a good start.

Re: Subscriber value. If your squeeze page converted at 25% and you converted 5% of your subscribers into buyers of a $10 album then you would be making $50 for every 100 subscribers and yes, your subscriber value would be .50 cents. I've seen a number of people bring in subscribers for under .50 but is quite difficult. And yeah, I would say that without additional monitization points you will have a hard time making paid ads work. Bump that conversion rate to 8% - 10% and it becomes more doable. But that would be a pretty high conversion rate, and not something everyone is able to do. The more engaging you are, the higher the conversion rate. Live shows alone can give you the positive ROI you are looking for, as can an upsell. But it given what you have said it may be that free traffic is the way to go for a while.

Also, don't underestimate old school person-to-person traffic. When you meet people out in the real world that are interested in what you are doing, send them to the squeeze page for a free track. Or better yet, get their email address and upload it yourself (with their permission). Conversions tend to be very high on those real world connections.

Nick,

I love your music!

I see that your last posts were a few months ago. I am very interested to hear how you  made out with HubPages and Reddit. I too am on a limited budget and plan to spend at least 90 minutes a day on free traffic and will probably end up spending much more than that per day for a while. I am lucky because music is all I do so I have the time and the focus but I am very unfamiliar with article writhing. How do you like HubPages and Reddit so far?
