Hey John,

Is it ok for me to reprint a few of the articles I wrote for Mind Body Green on my site, popgozen.com ? I'd rather do that than come up with new content just now. The articles are a few months old. Let me know...

It depends on from what angle you are asking. From an SEO perspective it's not the best approach. If you just need some content for your site then it's fine so long as you think the people visiting your site will enjoy the content and find it relevant.

Hope that helps.

Are you talking about republishing an article from one part of the internet to your site (ie duplicate content)? Or something else...?

What I have heard is that if you are duplicating content you want to try to make it substantially different, otherwise Google can punish sites for duplicate content.

Yes, I'm talking about having authored an article which was originally published on Mind Body Green and then a few months later, re-purposing that same article for added content on my site.

If it's a matter of it simply not helping SEO I'm cool with that because I think my users will enjoy the content. But if google would actually punish me for that, that wouln't be worth it.

I'm sure there are plenty of online news outlets that reprint articles, no? How would this be any different... Esp. since I'm the writer?

Hi, Julianna:

Didn't mean to worry you!

What I mean by "punish" is that apparently Google can result in a website being ranked lower in its search engines if it is found to have duplicate content with other sites.  Admittedly, I haven't personally had this happen to me, yet I have talked with other professionals who take this issue very seriously, and I try to as well.  It may be more applicable in a case where someone was putting the same article onto many, many sites (?).

Here's an article I found online that talks about duplicate content and syndicated content, which I think is what you are talking about when you talk about news outlets taking stories.  Maybe it will help:

Best,  Chris

interesting article... thanks Chris! I guess I'm confused about what qualifies as duplicating content vs. syndicating it. My intention is syndication but the content is the same on both sites. What is it that tips google towards perceiving content as duplicate rather than syndicated? Any Idea?

Hi Julianna:

I hadn't really thought about the difference of the two types of content until reading your post, I'm curious too about the difference. From reading the article it appears that even if you syndicate content that Google will choose which website to rank highest.  Personally, I am of the mind that customizing your content on your website so it uniquely appears there is a good idea.  Yet if you still want to "syndicate" the content, go for it, see what happens... worst case scenario, you test it and realize it wasn't a good idea.  Or you can put up your articles right now and then modify them later.  Either way, you'll learn something.   :)

Hope this helps

There is a lot of confusion out there surrounding duplicate content. It's more an issue of not wanting duplicate content to appear on your own site. In other words, 10 versions of the same page. Google does reward unique content, so having a site full of unique content will help you. But publishing content that has been published elsewhere will not get you penalized per say. Otherwise all of those big news sites that syndicate content would be performing terrible in the SERPS. But as a general rule I would try to create a site full of unique content so that you leave the footprint of a quality site.
