Hi John, hope you're good.

I've created a custom video audience of people who watched a 95% of a video that I posted in the autumn. I put quite a lot of £ into it, and there are around 20,000 people who watched it at 95% (looking in my ads manager). But when I created the custom audience it says for the size: below 1000. Since I created the audience this evening, the thing that says 'populating' has gone now and it says 'ready' so in theory, it's ready.

(I want to create a lookalike audience out of this, but concerned that there's a glitch or something I don't quite understand regarding the size of this initial audience).

I have a feeling it could be a bit of a winner, this audience, so I want to get it right - any thoughts as to what is going on here?

Not sure if this extra info is helpful, but when I select the custom audience in my ads manager as a test, the 'potential reach' is unavailable, but there are numbers for the estimated daily results. (see screen shot)

Thanks in advance for your help.

Karen

Hi Karen,

It's likely that one of two things is happening here...

1. It just needs more time to populate, despite the fact that the label is gone.

2. You used international targeting and got most of your views in one country but you are now trying to create a custom audience in a different country where you don't yet have enough views.

I suspect the first one, but I'm not sure. Any changes since you posted this?

Hi John thanks for your response.

There are no changes- it's been 24 hours and the audience is still less than 1000. I do know that pretty much all the video views are UK views (I just double checked in the ad set.) But when I create the custom audience, this is not relevant, as it doesn't ask about countries at that point....?!

I did wonder whether this might be to do with the fact that I posted the video as a Facebook post and 'used existing post' at the ad level. I don't exactly see why that would be a problem, as I did double check a couple of times and I'm still able to select that exact video when creating the custom audience. I can tell it's the same video from the monumental amount of views it has. But I mention it incase it's relevant.

It's slightly frustrating as I did put quite a bit of money into this to try as a strategy. I wonder if it's a glitch, and whether it's worth just creating the lookalike anyway and giving it a go. But it would be a shame if I'm missing something as facebook did seem to massively hone in on my audience with this video, with a third of all people who had impressions watching to 95% of a 1 minute video.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Karen

Hey Karen,

While it's always possible that there is a glitch, it's more likely there is a misunderstanding/misinterpretation somewhere in the chain. Or possibly a targeting setting you have in place that is eclipsing your audience. My advice would be to contact Facebook support to ask them why your stats show one number as having viewed 95% of the video, but that you are getting a warning that your audience is too small. They will be able to pop the hood and tell you exactly why it's happening. It's just too hard for me to diagnose on this side of the screen. Let us know what they say. Bottom line, if the audience is there, you will be able to use them.

Thanks for this. OK I've figured out what's going on. I noticed when hovering over the 'i' in the custom audience section that it says "This size might be different from what you see in Ads Manager because Audience Manager does not count Audience Network views".

I checked placements in my ads manager and noticed that the vast majority of the 95% views were from audience network. There's literally just a handful from other placements. Even at 50% there's only 45 views, compared to 20,756 from audience networks! This sounds like something related to the IOS thing... ?

A bit of a shame because of the amount of £ I put in... but hey ho.

Oh wow, yeah, that's news to me. I'm assuming it is iOS 14 related. That is a real bummer. Sorry to hear it.

This just goes to show that we should stick with FB and Instagram only placements so we have access to the data.
