Hi John,
I was off to an amazing start when I first started running my ads...$1.69 per conversion in the first few hours. But it's gone downhill from there... It looks like one of my ads is a clear winner (maybe two could work), and I'm wanting to stop at least three of the ads so I don't burn through SO much money learning what's working, since it looks like only one of the ads is converting.
But I remember you saying it takes time (30 conversions?) for FB to learn who your best audience is, so I'm wondering, should I leave all five ads active, or stop the non-performing ads and put all my money to the top one (or two - even though only one has converted so far)?
I've attached my metrics so far so you can see...
Thanks!
Okay... four days (and some dollars!) later, I have 71 conversions (yay!), but at too high a cost: overall, $2.86 per conversion (today's and yesterday's costs were lower: $2.11 yesterday and $2.04 today).
How can I get the cost down? I'll attach some numbers here. I've also attached the two best performing ads (the only ones I'm still running), along with their lifetime results.
Thanks for your help in this. I'm DETERMINED to make this work -- it's incredibly empowering to see that I've gotten so many conversions in just a few days!
Thanks,
Ali
Hey Ali,
Looking at the first screenshot, it looks like your relevance score is a bit low. 6 or 7 is not terrible, but I usually see 9 or 10 in the beginning of a successful ad, and then it eventually settles around 8 or 9. That basically means that the engagement is lower than it should be. That typically means higher costs per click and ultimately more money per conversion. The good news is that your squeeze page is converting. What is the conversion rate according to Aweber?

Hi John - Sorry - I just emailed you as I didn't get notification that you responded to my forum message. weird. Anyway, my relevance score for the best ad got up to 8, and the cost ended up at $1.30. Still not where I want to be, but closer.
According to Aweber, the conversion rate is 21.0 %
I've paused the ad campaign, as I'm waiting to see how many people actually buy something, so I can calculate the subscriber value. I'll post the "winning" ad here so you can see it. I'd like to tweak the copy so it performs better in my next go-round, but I'm thrilled to have so many new subscribers without having left the house! 😉
That's not bad actually. $1.30 isn't too out of range. A relevancy score of 8 is good but a 9 is not hat hard to get. That should bring the cost per click down. And that conversion rate can be improved with a few tweaks, which will bring the cost per subscriber down. Hopefully a few tweaks will bring you under $1. Seems pretty feasible.
I think you can do more with the ad copy to put more emphasis on the experience your music offers. Right now the emphasis is on the free download. It's likely the strength of your image that is currently carrying the ad.
See what you can come up with and let us know.
And make sure you have notifications on in your profile so you get the replies 🙂

Thanks - I'll try tweaking the ad copy in the next round. Right now I'm waiting to see if I get any takers on the LTO. Today is the first day (of 7) that the FB traffic will be exposed to the offer. I think I'll wait till everyone goes through the funnel, assess where I'm at, tweak things and then start buying ads again.
I thought I had notifications on (I received some)...I'll go check!
Thanks again!
Sounds good. How many subscribers do you have? Doing a little math before spending too much is a good idea, but you need to make sure you have enough subscribers to achieve some level of statistical significance.

Today I have 1,219 subscribers (138 are from the FB ads I ran last week). So far, no one has taken me up on the LTO (it's day 3 for the people who signed up on my first day of running FB ads).
However, all this marketing brainstorming has gotten me to think about how I can better monetize the list I have, so in my last email I sent out a call for house concerts this year and I've already booked 3, so that's fantastic.
I've tweaked my remaining ad and started running it at just $3/day, to see what I can do for extremely low cost, until I get a better conversion rate. Any thoughts on the new copy?
When you say that you are at email three, do you mean of the LTO, or of the series? 139 FB subs is not a lot, but you should definitely see at least a sale or two by the end of the LTO, and even that would be low. If you're not then something needs to be looked at with those emails.
As for the copy, it still feels flat to me. "Rocking out" just feels a little stale, if you don't mind me being blunt... I do think that "classic 70's rock feel" communicates something that I can lock into.
Just spit-balling here, but what about something like...
Remember Authentic Rock N' Roll?

I'm not saying the above is all that great, but I think it pulls people in more. The goal is to tap into something that your audience is already thinking/feeling and then give them a next step.

Yes, I very much appreciate you being blunt!! I'll try that new copy - I like it better. And yes, day 3 of the LTO - and no sales so far. I think maybe my offer is not enticing enough (or there's an issue with the copy, or both). Plus, when people opt in they get three songs (one from each of my albums). Maybe I should only give two songs away? Maybe the offer is too confusing...
Here's a link to my LTO: http://alihandalmusic.com/you-rock/
Maybe instead of what I'm offering, I should offer two albums for $9.97, and keep it all digital, as you do. It just leaves less available for an upsell, but I definitely need to improve the funnel.
I couldn't send you a screen shot of the LTO because when I want to preview the page, it's expired for me! Is there any way around that?)
Thanks for your thoughts - I'm gonna keep at this until it works!
Hey Ali,
With the new ad, did you just create a new ad set, or did you create a new campaign from scratch? It's important to create a new campaign from scratch. That resets Facebook's algorithm and gets your ad in front of first tier traffic (those most likely to respond) as apposed to just creating a new ad set in an active campaign, which will likely just send your ad to the same downward trending segment of your audience that you were serving with the previous ad.
The new ad looks good, but it really comes down to numbers more than my opinion. But yes, I personally like it much more than the original.
Your LTO looks ok. Perhaps the offer is a bit less clear than a simple two for the price of one would be, but I would expect it to still convert.
What are your open rates like on the follow ups in Aweber?

I actually just edited the ad I had been using - is that bad?
If so, I'll pause this campaign and start a new one with the same audience setting. Maybe I'll try the two most recent ads I showed you -- using the same photo. Neither has been seen by many people.
My Aweber stats aren't great (compared to people who sign up after seeing me perform live). Here are my open rates for the FB traffic so far:
Welcome/Download email - 55% (they're also directed straight to the download page when they sign up, so they don't HAVE to open this email to download songs, but this still seems very low)
"(Name) This Involves You" - 52.7%
"Singing With Neil Young" - 30.3%
"Making Agonizing Decisions" - I just added this one, as my sales rate was abysmal and I thought I needed one more relationship-building email that also talks about a "dramatic" point in making the album I'm about to pitch in the next email.
"(Name) You Rock" - 36.1%
"Time Sensitive - Goodies & Free Songs" - 17.4%
"Final Notice" - 17.2%
In a nutshell, yes. Facebook uses an algorithm that distributes your ad to the people most likely to engage withing your price range. As you run out of people to show your ad to that match the ideal profile, Facebook starts to distribute the ad to a broader pool of people. Usually this is when you see your prices go up, while still converting. Your ad may also be negatively impacted as it's performance goes down, and that negative "quality score" is likely to impact it's ability to be served up to the ideal audience once that happens. Or at least this is the belief among most advertisers. Facebook does not actually tell us what they do, we just form opinions based on experiences.
So by just editing your ad you are still going to experience to the same downward trajectory you were experiencing because Facebook's algorithm has already decided how your adset/campaign is performing. Sow whenever an ad starts to decline. Just start a new campaign, even if you use the same target audience and creative. Usually you will see fresh life breathed into that ad.
Yeah, those open rates are fairly low. I've seen worse. But they should be better. The first email open rate should be much better. I would make people open that email rather than sending direct to a download page (even if you send them to a download page from the welcome email). You want to train these people to open your emails from the get go.
Looking at your numbers it looks like you have only had 40 people or so open your first LTO email. While I would have still expected a sale, that is technically not enough to have established any statistical significance. But it's not a good indicator.
It's hard to diagnose when I am only getting little glimpses at the big picture, but usually when you are converting leads well but not sales, the problem is in your follow up series. If I would to guess I would say you may need to introduce more life into the email series. Based on the headlines I'm guessing you are sticking pretty close to my templates. That's completely fine, and I've seen people do well by more or less copy and pasting, often they can fall flat because my voice and style doesn't mesh with you and your audience. Just a thought.

Yeah, I was thinking I need to make my emails a bit more "my own" as well. The story emails are very much in my style and voice, but the "sales" ones are not, so I'll mess with those first.
I just started running my two new ads. Nothing fantastic yet, except now my relevance score is 9, so that's a good sign. I'm only putting $5/day towards the ads right now - is that enough to get an idea of how they're going to do? I'm targeting a total audience of 280,000, which seems like plenty of people for FB to figure out who to send these ads to.
I'll upload my first days' report (of course, it's also Sunday and Valentine's Day today, so I'm guessing that's not helping me, but it took a couple of days for FB to approve my new ads).
Thanks for the help. I'm committed to creating a great system, but it's definitely not for the faint of heart! (and I know I have a long way to go)
Yeah, Sundays are my worst days for conversions/sales. I typically try to avoid starting ads on slow days. Not sure if that will really effect anything or not though. I just like to start off strong with any potential quality score FB might assign to a new ad.
That's great that your relevancy score is up. That's a good sign.
In terms of your budget... If you are using optimized bidding (where you ask FB to give you as many conversions as possible based on your budget) $5 might be a tad small. FB has told me that their algorithm partially re-sets each day. And with less than 5 conversions per day, their algorithm doesn't have enough data to do what it needs to do. So unless you are already bringing in 5 conversions a day, you may want to up that a bit. Or you could switch to clicks and just measure your conversions to see how the ads do. Both ways can be effective. But you would want to start a new campaign if you were going to create the new ad type. Don't just edit what you have.

Okay, I just edited the ad set and upped the daily amount to $10. It seems that FB was slowing down delivering my ads at the $5/day level. Not seeing the kind of momentum I did with my first campaign (at $20, then $40/day), and the ad relevancy score is higher with both of these ads.
It's really weird - today FB says I've had 0 conversions, but Aweber has sent me notifications of 3 people who signed up today (and I know at least 2 people are from the FB ad). Have you ever seen that before?
Also weird - I didn't get email notification of you answering my post this time. It seems to only work some of the time...
Or is it me and bad computer karma??!!!
I think I know what happened with my FB stats, but I'm not sure how to fix it.
Originally, I set up my squeeze page so that when someone enters their email address, they're redirected to a "Thank You" page that enables them to directly download my 3 free songs from there. After my lousy email open rates, you suggested I train my audience to have to open an email before they can download the songs, so I changed the landing page for a signup -- now they go to a thank you page that tells them to check their email for download info. I believe that's why successful signups no longer show up in my FB stats -- the FB pixel was tracking who landed on the original download page.
I tried to edit my original "AH Leads 2016" pixel, but was unable to, so I created another pixel targeting the new landing page.
Is that it, or do I need to install this new pixel on my new landing page? Sorry - its been quite a while since I set up the first one. Do I replace the old pixel with the new one?
Or am I getting confused with the pixel I set up that tracks EVERYONE who visits my general website? Overall I'm a bit confused by the different FB pixels and what they track...
Thanks so much for helping me improve my system.
Yes, I believe you need to create a new ad. Not necessarily a new campaign.
