Hi John,

A while ago you mentioned in an email that you don't tend to exclude warm audiences as the algorithm filters these out pretty quickly. But I'm wondering how quickly this might happen typically? I have had thousands of people view videos in the past year, who I haven't excluded on this recent campaign I am running. After a day, the cost per subscriber are pretty sky high for all the ad sets, but I'm wondering does it typically take a day (or longer) to get through warm audiences, meaning there will be very few subscribers for the first day or two?

On a different but related note, I just turned off the confirmed opt-in to help the algorithm along a bit. I haven't really done this before but remember you did it once in a tutorial, and was wondering do you always do this if you're not getting your 5 subs a day? Are there pitfalls to doing this such as fb optimising for people who put in secondary emails? Or is it fine as long as you only do it for a few days to kick start the algorithm?

Thanks !

Karen

Hey Karen,

There is no set rule or way to say for a fact that it will take a set amount of time to filter people out. But the algorithm typically starts working based on conversions very quickly, or as soon as they start coming in. Exclusions have never been necessary for me and I have had worse results adding them. However, I know other marketers that swear by them. It just depends on your audience. So if you think that's an issue for you, try adding an exclusion and see what happens.

I have not been turning confirm opt in off much at all lately. There have been a LOT of reports from MMM students getting dismal results with it off and then great results with it on, which has me growing concerned about the potential for a growing bot and click farm problem, even in first word countries. I would be leaving it on at the moment. But like anything, you can try it and see what happens. All that matters is your bottom line.

Thanks for this John. I just turned confirmed opt-in off at the beginning of day two, (which was yesterday) and thought about turning it on again in a day or two, so not leaving it on permanently. I did that as I remember you doing that in a tutorial for the band Visemann you were working for, purely to help get to 5 subs a day, so facebook could optimise.

Do you still think that's perhaps a bad idea these days, even just used as a very temporary tactic?

From doing this, I got to 7 subs for the US yesterday, so I was thinking of leaving it for 1 more day (two days in total) and then turning it back on again...

Thanks !

Nothing is really a bad idea. It's just the results that are good or bad. I've seen so many low quality subs over the last year when confirmed opt-in is off that I'm not currently doing that, so I suspect you'll see a better ROI when you have it on, but all you can do is pick a path and test. I would not toggle the campaign, I would start a new campaign with it off and proceed. But it would not be unreasonable to stay the course and see what your engagement rate and sales rate is like after 100 - 200 subs
