One thing I have found helpful in my followup emails (i.e., the timed automated emails I send after someone signs up to my list), is to include something like:
If you have a second to spare, please head on over to http://www.facebook.com/LangerMusic and post a comment on my wall. I'll appreciate ANYTHING you might have to say.
People do it. The cool thing is: it shows up on newsfeeds. So you've just got someone posting something nice about you on your wall for all that person's friends to see. People listen to what their friends say. Of course, I have a link to my squeeze page prominently displayed on my page. I happen to use a Reverbnation banner page as my "first-timers" landing page. Yes, I do get signups that way. If you want to see how I'm doing it, and what kind of comments that generates, check out the facebook link above.
I think what you've said here about the positive comments showing in other people's news feeds is really powerful.
Social proof is sooooo important to 'knocking people off the fence' about things. Especially online.
In the real world too though. Think about how many times you or a friend has become fans of a band, just because others have already said that they like them?
Thanks for sharing this idea.

I completely agree, sometimes you just have to ask people flat out to do something, a certain “call to action” if you will. I was wondering though, since we’re on the subject of automated emails, if you guys have any good ideas for some topics or content to include to send to your subscribers.
I know John covers it briefly in MMM 2.0 with the Billy Burke example, but I wanted to hear some of your guy’s ideas. Obviously, free songs, videos, and the like will be included, but what else? I’ve been trying to put together a list of topics to add some value to my emails, but sometimes you just run dry of material. Any ideas?
-Mike
Good stuff Charley, thanks for sharing it.
@Mike, I'm putting together a new series now and will share the results once I update my autoresponde but I'm leaning towards a series that looks something like this...
Email 1: Here's your free track.
Email 2: A video of me in the studio or some other "get to know me video", hosted on the blog with a request for a comment using the Facebook comment plugin.
Email 3: A blog post that both drives home my passion for music and also alludes to my album and something special they should be watching for, with a request for a comment using the Facebook comment plugin.
Email 4: Scarcity based special offer.
Email 5: Add even more value to the offer.
Email 6: Even more value and a warning that the offer is going away soon.
Email 7. A Final notice that the offer comes down tonight at midnight.
Then back to just sending out cool an interesting blog posts with the occasional offer thrown into the mix until it's time for another aggressive promo somewhere down the line.
Throwing in contests and anything fun that get's them involved is also a great thing to do. Hope that helps.

Hey John, how's this new series coming along? I'm also pretty stuck on my autoresponder replies, and in my whole process, because this is so essential to continue what I'm doing. I want this to be in order before sending traffic to my page...
Working on the 5 mail template from mmm2.0, but i have no video (yet) for the 3rd mail. Need some ideas here... Don't want to skip to the direct buying appeal, or can I... since I have nothing really interesting on my mind to fill another email...
Thinking about contests and other involvement, but that's not really good for autoresponse, more as direct broadcast, or am I mistaken here?
Jasper,
Would you by chance have an embarrassing video of yourself? Strange question I know, but I'm actually going somewhere with this...
Often times... and Ive seen this work personally with sales letters and things..., but if you can come up with a damaging admission, or something that borders on your own humiliation (to a degree) it actually has the psychological effect of humanizing you to the people you are connecting with.
In a sense it sort of fills the space between you and the viewer. It puts you right down on earth with them, where they are.
Let me see if I can give you a "for instance"...
For one of my promotions I wrote what I thought was a "killer sales letter". Of course in the letter I was promising the positive outcome that I am now experiencing. However, it was not converting. I decided to ad a few lines about how bad I had been failing before I achieved that success and BOOM... sales started to roll in.
It wasn't until I gave a really hard look until I realized that I was probably coming off as 'Mr. Perfect" ...and nobody likes that douchebag.
The failure part was something the reader could identify with and ultimately pushed them to my side of things.
See if you have anything like that to fill the space between you and your new fans.
-Steve
Oh shit... I just thought of something....
Kind of goes along with the embarrassing video thing. Maybe if there is a funny picture of you that you could encourage people to comment on and see who can give it the best caption.
"Best Caption Contest" kinda thing.
Actually, I do have exactly that... A video i did while trying out a concept for a video (in dutch even!). I uploaded it, but I can't really watch it myself fince it embarrasses the hell out of me!
Some other video I uploaded some years ago is me skydiving, but it has nothing to do with my music really. It could be fun to show this though...
What are your thoughts on these? Is there 1 video you think could work?
Thanks Steve! Jasper
Yo! That's great dude!
You may find it to be embarrassing, but I'm pretty sure people would love that (I did).
Whatever you can do to both engage your readers and pull them into your reality, but also your website and social media circle.
So if you were to use my example of the video or caption contest you could set up a message like this:
Subject: "Wow... I feel so dumb." OR "I can't believe I actually did this."
Message: Hi firstname,
I think that I really ought to be more careful in the future. I don't want anymore pictures like this (make "pictures like this" a link) getting out.
However since this one (link "this one") is already out, we might as well all have a good laugh before I have to take it down to save myself from further embarrassment.
Feel free to leave a funny caption:
(Place the full link here)
I can't believe I'm actually showing this to you...
-Jasper
Short, sweet and should do the trick. Of course you can always split test the subject line. Give it a rip.
-Steve
Sounds like a great idea, I'll certainly give it a try! To be sure: do you think I should the first video only? I guess it's a more direct link to my music production. Using more video's in 1 blast will probably divide attention?
I like the 2nd subject you wrote more, think it will be the topic-line that would make me more curious.
Thanks again for helping out here!
I think both videos are pretty fun, you decide.
The important thing to remember is that you don't have to be "selling" all of the time. Your goal with email is two- fold:
You want to get opened and then you want to get a click back to you website or facebook page. From there if you want to have an offer of some sort, throw it out there.
This may be a bit on the pricey side, but I've seen some marketers offering a chance to win a free ipod (or something) to people just for sharing or re-tweeting the video.
Maybe you could offer an ipod (pre-loaded with your music of course) to the winner of your caption contest. Of course, that's something you might want to hold off on until you have generated some momentum in your subscriber count.
I'm just trying to demonstrate one of the many different, outside- the- box ways to get eyeballs (and ears) on your stuff.
Have fun with it!
-Steve
P.S. @John Oszajca... have you ever tried a give-away like this in some capacity?
I think it's a great idea the more I think about it. I was looking for a great-looking youtube video, but this is indeed showing more of who I am. Hope people like this 🙂 Thanks again!

Probably still a few weeks away. I'm off to Europe on the 3rd for two months. Super slammed at the moment. I just had Scott James (from here in the forum) design me the squeeze page, now I need to get the email series together. I outlined what it will say above, I just need to get some videos together. I'll share everything once I have some results.
I thought Steve's idea was great and the video was really fun.
