So, we're working on an AdWords campaign based on similar artists that we found using Radio Airplay and I get an email saying that Google will do an "adwords review" to help maximize keywords, save money, etc... So I call today and do the review and as soon as I say that I'm a musician, the girl says, "I'm going to stop your campaign and we're moving to YouTube. It's 100 times more effective and it costs the same."
I can't say that breaks my heart because in a week, we've spent $35 on AdWords, gotten 11,000 views, 70 clicks and 1 conversion. That's a shit rate and since when we tested this email funnel with live show email signups and they were shown to be with $1.33 an address, spending $35 per address is a little out of our league.
Since my act has a YouTube strategy and plenty of videos (over 300 that unfortunately only a handful have more than a thousand views) she showed me what to do and now we're going to try and use YouTube instead of AdWords to drive traffic to the squeeze page. Anyway, let me know if you guys have done it and have any advice!
Hi Mike!
I've tried adwords aswell for abit, the results where HORRIBLE. I've been thinking that youtube could be a good strategy, but the thing that is very very important when doing marketing on youtube is to get ppl OFF youtube and INTO our squeeze page pretty quickly. Otherwise they will probably just continue clicking around.
How did she suggest to do with youtube campains? Have these annotations or speak bubbles coming up sayin that they should go to our site to get our latest single? I havent done youtube really, exept getting some views for our music video, but that aint worth shit since I don't know how watched it.
so, what did she suggest to do with the youtube thing? I think you would find facebook waaay more effective than adwords
I've been doing a lot of research into Youtube - but haven't advertised as yet. The benefit of advertising there right now is there's a ton of inventory but not many advertisers = cheap advertising. On top of that, you only pay for your ad is someone watches it for 30 seconds - anything less than 30 seconds = free promo.
Having said that - I don't know what the stats are on Youtube ads - I know that I usually close any that I see pretty damn fast unless it's highly relevant and entertaining to the content I'm trying to watch.
Hey Mike,
Yeah, it's one of the reasons I have never done a lesson on Adwords for musicians. It can be tough to make money. I'm sure it can be improved from the $35 per sub, but it's a tough platform for many markets. I'm surprised that she sent you to YouTube, and I kind of think that it's probably a bad call. I don't find video to be effective enough to pay for views personally. But i do think the right long tail keywords could be made to work through search. But it's not where I would start. I'd stick with FB and then maybe branch off to bing just to start, if you want to explore paid search.

Thanks for all this input. I had almost started to spend time figuring out ad words adsense. Got saved
some time which there is so little of with all this marketing strategy.
I'll let you guys know how the YouTube thing goes after a couple of weeks. I've got some free Google money to burn, so that's what I'll use before paying them out of pocket!
Sounds good. Would love to hear how it goes for you.

Okay, well I've been running the YouTube ads for almost ten days now and the results are negligible.

Ugh, okay, there's a call-to-action link which now lets me direct people to the squeeze page directly (that wasn't there when I started the campaign, we just started to be able to link directly off-site this week), so we'll see if that improves anything.
We're targeting keywords for 30 Seconds to Mars, The Killers, and Rise Against, which were the top bands that a couple thousand radio airplay spins said that our music sounded the most like (based on the people that were fans of our music from there.)
Right now, we're really not even getting enough traffic to start testing whether or not our copy is having any kind of effect, so this week I'm going to devote myself to more traffic generation (we're putting up Christmas song-related blogposts and videos to a few Christmas covers we've recorded that require email addresses for the free download). We've had the squeeze page in place, auto responders, and a brand new special offer in for awhile now (we had the squeeze page and auto responders for our last record and that actually sold some offers, but not for the new EP yet), but I just haven't had enough traffic to even really test it.
What are you guys all doing for new visitors? I'd love to share some ideas, we're great on making content (blog articles, videos, social posts) and we're getting action on our social media networks but not enough new visitors to our squeeze page, so I'd love to brainstorm with you guys to see what you're doing and what's working!
Thanks for sharing. For me, it's all about Facebook right now and has been for a while. I love the combo of the new social feed ads, boosted posts, and organic activity.
