Hey John,
I picked up some great tips from you on PPC. Thanks for doing that one. I didn't realize some of the subtle differences from more traditional networks. And I picked up some stuff that will help with other PPC.
I know I've gotten quiet on the forum. I've just gotten busy in a good way. I've had a few calls from insider circle members on You Tube. I'm always happy to help and be helped. Y'all rock!
Hey Charley, glad you liked it. Been wondering where you've been. Glad to hear things are going well. Don't be a stranger in the forum 🙂

A few more thoughts...
One thing I am starting as a result of this training (incidentally, I'm posting here because I got errors posting to the monthly training forum section) is to focus on the EXPERIENCE my fan is trying to create.
Part of this shift in focus includes testing a squeeze page redesign. My current squeeze page, which actually converts reasonably well, sells Charley Langer rather than an experience. It converts non-PPC at 25-35% (depending on source), and PPC at about 20%. My new test page includes visual and verbal imagery that I know is appealing to my fans, and I am pretty sure I can get my conversions up with some experimentation.
My cost per click is 0.05 (search engine network, not FB), and that gives me low double-digit subs per day. I'm shooting for 50 subs a day. Yes, I'm bidding bottom of the barrel. It doesn't seem to help me much to pay more -- I just burn through more cash on "casual clickers."
What you have inspired me to do is get my conversions up AND go after other key words that fit my demographic. If I think about the experience my fan is trying to create, that opens up a whole world of new key words. 🙂 I'm pretty excited about that. I'll let you know how it goes.
One thing that I think those just delving into this should keep in mind is, at least in my limited experince, PPC subs may not convert in sales from your website as well as more "organic" subs. I suspect that my PPC subs tend to look at me as more of a businessman than this unknown, wonderful artist that they discovered. On the other hand, my royalty and iTunes income has been going up since I started doing PPC. I'm not sure that correlation is causation, but I get 1.5 million impressions/month to my demographic and I only pay for clicks. So if you're still holding out on the traditional "tipping point" model, you might consider putting your money in PPC. 🙂
Thanks Charley, what was the error you experienced? Not able to duplicate it. Hopefully it was just a temporary server issue or something.
As for PPC, it's normal that it doesn't convert as well because it's completely cold. Organic traffic usually has some element of "referral" to it which really helps. But it does convert. I suspect with a market like jazz you might really want to target an older audience (one that spends money), if you're not already doing that.
Let us know how things progress. Love what you're doing. You're such a great example of the application of this stuff.

It just wouldn't let me post, and the browser said "error on page."

I've been mostly using sound-alikes as my keywords, so the demographics should be about the same (i.e., older audience that spends money). Nevertheless, I'm going to expand my keywords after I see how the new squeeze page does. I think it looks pretty darn inviting to my demographic:
http://www.charleylanger.net/msnetwork/
It might be a little too wordy, and that's something I'll test out later. My demographic tends to be a little more intellectual, so it might work. It also tends to lean towards women.
Here's the one I've been using that I know works:
Awesome man. Let me know how it converts.

It appears to have gone up a couple %. I'm still doing some minor tweaks. Also, my wife suggested a few wording changes to the headline, which seem to have helped. My wife is actually in my demographic, so I respect her opinions. I think she was right.
My initial revised version said:
Light a candle, get yourself comfortable, and prepare to let your mind be stimulated by one of the most refreshing smooth jazz artists in recent time.
I changed it to say:
Light a candle, get yourself comfortable, and let your heart and mind be moved by one of the most refreshing smooth jazz artists in recent time.
She thought that "prepare" implies work. She also didn't like "mind" and "stimulated." I get what she is saying, but I am branding myself as "Intelligent Smooth Jazz." So I tried to hit a middle ground with "let your heart and mind be moved." I'll let you know as more time passes. I like a fairly large sample size (at least 100 subs) before I say conclusively, "this works better than that."
Hi Charley,
It still sounds a little awkward to me. What about getting rid of the "let your heart and mind be moved by" to just "and enjoy one of the" or "chill out to" - or just "let your mind be moved" since you are intelligent jazz. The "heart and mind" breaks up the flow of the sentence in my opinion.

Hi Annie,
I really appreciate that, and those are good suggestions. I especially like the "chill out to" idea. I am going to let my text stand as is just for now only because I don't want to change too many things at once during my test period. That said, this version appears to be converting better than my previous version by about 4%. As I said, I like about 100 subs to be confident my sample is large enough; nevertheless, the fluctuations appear to be leveling off. I'm well over 20%, which I think is pretty good. And my CPC is less than 0.10.
Based on these results, I'm going to try some Facebook ads again also. Speaking of Facebook, I put a download button on my landing page that goes to my FTML "squeeze page." I am getting some signups just from organic traffic. Here's what I'm doing: http://www.facebook.com/LangerMusic.
awesome to read all about your experimentation charley! i am working on creating a FB ad and, as I am doing pop music, i haven't yet found terms that get my bid amount under $1. even using the local venue! going to keep thinking on it and will keep you all posted.

When you say, "using the local venue," are you talking about as a "precise interest" or as a geotarget? Geotargeting can make things more expensive. And if you're using a venue as a "precise interest," you might not want to do that unless those that play that venue are similar enough to you -- we get everyone from Norah Jones to Iron Maiden!
Just as an experiment, I went into my Facebook ad and used Sarah McLachlan as my "precise interest," and my suggested bid was $0.35. I'm targeting United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia.
So, if your bid is over a dollar, I'm thinking you might have something set in a way that you don't want it set.
I do find Facebook cost per click is more than at MSNetwork, but I think the traffic on Facebook is better because: (1) my conversions on my squeeze page are better for essentially the same ad, and (2) The subscription confimration rate is better than MSNetwork. It's kind of six of one, half a dozen of another. I'm still looking for that free lunch!!
Hey Kat,
$1 sounds way to high. the only time I get bid suggestions that high is when I'm going after financial or traditionally profit driven stuff. Music stuff is usually pretty cheap. What are you bidding on exactly and what targeting are you applying? And just to make sure, are you clicking the suggested big option or are you looking at the high end of the range. It should be very easy to bring your prices way down.
Being familiar with your project Kat, I do want to remind you that while I think PPC is awesome, you might do better to cut your teeth on free traffic until your funnel is profitable. Jumping right in with paid traffic can work, but it's more likely to be expensive. The funnel is what is most important. The traffic is secondary. I just don't want to see you lose money and I fear you might if you don't have some real numbers in your hands first.
Hope you don't mind my two cents on that.

Suggested Bid: $1.09 - 1.63 USD
And, John, your two cents is awesome- that makes a lot of sense. As my brain has never before been geared to SEO, metrics, etc., it is taking me some time to wrap my head around it. I'm feeling rather dim witted about asking questions as I pride myself on being an intelligent person!! That said, here goes. In order not to get overwhelmed, I am trying to choose ONE effective method of driving traffic into my funnel. Here are the options as I see them:
-Article Marketing
-JVs
-PPC Ads
-Blog traffic (ie SEO your own new website, posting on other people's blogs, doing guest blog posts)
I loved the recent podcast with Sean Mize (as I love all that you do!) and was really excited about the idea of spending 90 minutes a day working on traffic. I am happy to spend 90 minutes a day (and more!), but I got a little lost on what to do,where to start. It sounded like a combination of article marketing (in that you need to write an article or blog post on something related to another artist or music subject) and then start another website and work on SEO for that website. Did I get that right? Sorry if it seems like you are having to teach this stuff to a kindergartner! 🙂
If that's correct, I am stumped on content- most of the content that comes to mind for me is talking about feelings or telling stories about my bad driving!
I really want to make this work and I believe in all that is John Oszajca and I'm willing to do the work!
Hey again!
Ok, so I found earlier advice from you/John:
"finding keywords and creating content that would be interesting to your demographic and then presenting a link to your squeeze page in that content. That CAN be on your blog but it can also be on other blogs, article directories, wherever. "
So, for example, keywords for me, might be:
singer-songwriter
piano vocals
acoustic independent music
So then, I start a new wordpress site and blog about singer-songwriters? And then link back to my squeeze page and can get 300 people a day there? Maybe I should go back and review the SEO module b/c I feel like I'm shooting in the dark. Again, I feel terrible that I am not getting this very easily as you have provided so many resources!!
Hey Charley! That was really sweet of you to experiment- I tried to do the same thing, with my geo-targeting and using Sarah McLachlan as a precise interest and this is what I got:
Suggested Bid: $1.08 - 1.67 USD
and when I made it the entire US- the suggested bid was $1.30....what am I missing? Hmm! Thanks Charley!
Ok, Kat. I took a screenshot. Set it EXACTLY like this. It may not be how you want to target geographically, but it will get you subscribers who will likely buy your album. And, if your suggested bid is more than $1.00, I will have to eat my shorts. And that will not be pretty. And I'm not going to do it without a screenshot of how you set up your ad.
Oh...you'll have to click on the image to enlarge it and read it.
Thanks for sharing your screen shot Charley. One thing that I think you really have going is that you are marketing to folks over 35. I find the older I target the better I do. Young people just don't buy as much. Especially on Facebook. Something for people to consider.
Kat - just sent you an email. Somehow I missed this thread. Yes, you have it basically right. But you can go even broader than that. Just imagine that you are a magazine for your potential fans. What do they care about? What might they turn to the internet to learn about? Then write about that. It's not as complicated as it might seem.

Hi guys!
First - how do you attach a screen shot/pic to the forum without it being on a website (I see insert/embed image, but it seems to require an image url)
Second - Charley, I changed all of the parameters to what you suggested, even using #Sarah Mclachlan (using the topic as the precise interest, instead of precise interest as you have above) and I STILL got an incredibly high bid. Arrrgh! I have the screen shot, but can't figure out how to attach it. Below are the parameters and the copy/paste of the target page.
I don't understand what I am missing! I feel like an insane asylum patient! (Ok, maybe that was a little dramatic. :))
Do you guys see something I'm not seeing? Thanks!! Kat

This ad targets 470,180 users:who live in one of the countries: United States, Canada, United Kingdom or Australiaage 35 and olderwho like #Sarah McLachlanSuggested Bid: $1.11 - 2.11 USD
The answer is now clear: Facebook likes me more than you. I'm kidding. Sort of. What might be happening is that Facebook is rewarding me with lower prices because I have run a "quality" campaign.
John, does that sound possible? In my experiment, I took an ad that I had been using, and had been performing well, and changed my targets. If they are rewarding me based on my history, then I would suspect that Kat's price would come down after she runs her ad. What do you think?
So, Kat, while you are brushing your teeth with hand soap, I'm eating my shorts. Nevertheless, I have a hard time believing you are going to continue to have to pay $1.00 or more a click for a good ad.
I'm back on the Facebook ad wagon, and really enjoying it. One of the cool things is that I have the VMP on my "thank you" page and, because these are active Facebook people responding to my ads, they are using VMP to tell their friends about my squeeze page. (I have VMP set up so that they post a link to my squeeze page on their FB page in order to get the download.) So, I get more mileage out of my ad.
