Hi John, hope all's good.

In June we had a long conversation here about my opt-in rates (which were about 50%) and after some detective work, discovered that my custom conversion event was for my step-1 thanks page. I have created a new conversion, which is for my success page, and have been running ads for the past 2 weeks. There's been about 60 subs in, but again only 50% of those 60 are confirming.

I'm baffled about this! I checked that I've been using the right custom conversion in my ad sets, and I have been using the success one. I notice in my conversion events, both the old one and new one are still active. Is this a problem? I left the old one 'Karen Grace lead' active because I think you recommended that as it was good to have the data. It's a bit confusing to me that they are both active and appear to be receiving conversions (see screen shots.) Is this just that facebook is still tracking who lands on the step-one thanks page, (but it's not actually using that information to optimise), so it's nothing to worry about as long as I put the right conversion event into my ad set ??

I'm obviously trying to find the culprit, so I have also attached the confirmed opt-in message that I am currently using, but I'm not convinced there's a problem there either.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Karen

It won't matter that you have the old conversion goal still active and tracking, so long as you have selected the new one in your ad and you have created a new campaign (as apposed to editing or adding to an older existing one).

And just to check... when you made these changes... did you create a new campaign so you would start monitoring stats with a clean slate or are you still contending with all of that old data, as far as open rates go. If so, it takes much longer to see the impact of the changes, so make sure you clear everything out and start fresh.

Otherwise, I can't really comment without clicking around and looking at everything to make sure its all set up correctly, other than to say that I can't recall ever seeing an open rate of 50% on the first email in a campaign that has confirmed opt in turned on.

Hi John,

Thanks re: the facebook set-up. Yes it's all from a clean slate, in new campaigns. It's possible that I created a campaign from duplicating an old one, and tweaking it ( I can't remember- but is this important?) My conversion goal was definately for the success page, from the start of this new campaign though.

I just wanted to check that you understand it's the confirmation rates that are still 50% (I haven't looked at the email series open rates yet). I can see that about half the 60 or so emails listed in recent subscribers in Aweber are still 'pending'- that's what's baffling me, after having made sure I'm using the right conversion goal.

I don't really know how these things work, but I wondered whether it's just that it takes facebook a while to optimise for people who confirm, as 60 subs is maybe not that many for facebook to optimise from ? I don't know how these things work, but all the other campaigns I've done in the past have been with the wrong conversion event (the step 1 thank you page).... so is it just a case of expecting it to get better over time, once facebook optimises ?

I will email you my login details for Aweber and my facebook account, if it helps you to check things. Let me know if you want me to pay you for your time looking at all this.

Thanks,

Karen

It's fine to duplicate from an old one, but not to edit an old one as it will carry past performance with it and your results will be messed up. I have no knowledge of this happening when duplicating a campaign, but in general I think it's a good idea to create from scratch when starting something new, just to be safe.

I thought that you were saying open rates were low, rather than confirmations. I wouldn't worry about confirmations. All that matters is that your subscriber value is greater than your subscriber acquisition costs. The algorithm will now be targeting people that confirm and trying to clone those people so in time it will likely improve. I know it's hard to look at those low numbers and see all of that wasted potential, but it doesn't really matter much if the cost to value ratio is where it needs to be. And there is much less you can do to control how many people confirm. That said, 50% is crazy low, so it is a bit odd. That said, I believe that part of the problem is that your numbers are low, and you may be seeing a statistical fluke. It could also be that passed performance of similar campaigns is still influencing things. If so, this should improve in time. All you can do is contact Aweber and ask a few friends to go through it and make sure there is nothing technical you are overlooking. If all is right, then proceed.

Thanks for your thoughts. I may ask Aweber about it again at some point. In the past they have recommended setting up DKIM and SPF records through my domain provider... but I think you said not to focus on that...?

There is also a thing in my list settings saying I am sending from an unverified email address (see screen shot).unverified-from-address.pngImage Enlarger

Is this an issue ?

I'm mentioning these things, in case they are important, as I don't want to miss a trick because I'm still working towards breaking even !

Thanks

Hey,

In the past I have said that you don't need to mess with the DKIM and SPF records, and you still don't need to (and I haven't for the most part), but there have been minor developments that have led to my advise on that changing. I consider it best practices now. But as I say, I have not done it, personally, and I still maintain that it is not the cause of your issue.

You should definitely verify the email. That only takes a quick second. I still don't think these things are the cause of your issue, but you might as well get all of your ducks in a row, if for no other reason than Aweber can't pass the buck. And who knows, maybe there is an issue with your particular email address and modifying those records will have a bigger impact than usual.
