Hey John

I have a bunch of questions regarding running a new DC campaign with three ad sets each targeting a different band/artist. I'm hoping these are pretty simple and quick answers for you as to not take up too much of your time. No ads are running yet, everything is still in draft form.

1. Do I turn Automatic Advanced Matching on/off?

2. Ive created one campaign which has one ad set targeting Jeff Buckley, how do I create two more ad sets each targeting their own audience? Do I just duplicate that ad set then change the audience accordingly? I see there's an A/B test option, do I use that?

3. My daily budget on the campaign level is $30 per day. When Ive figured out how to run 3 ad sets, how do I spread that $30 evenly over those three ad sets? I have campaign budget optimisation turned on. Will that decide automatically where to spend the money based on the cheapest conversions?

4. I saw in a chat with Karen here in the forum she asked about manual or automatic placements. You mentioned you turn on insta stories. Do you also turn on fb stories? Ive turned off insta and fb stories because my ads are the standard 1200x628 dimensions which won't fit stories, that still is the standard dimensions these days right? Which ones do you turn off?

5. Should detailed targeting expansion be turned on or off?

6. Should I manually change all languages from "all languages" to "english"

7. In your recent "Dialing in a new campaign" lesson you put the attribution window to 7 days. Is that still the go-to for lead generation?

8. It keeps saying my potential reach is 280 million people even after putting in the audience. I have duplicated the ad set from one to three, maybe thats the issue. Update: Just realised when I turn off detailed targeting expansion I now get the true size of the targeted audience. But still not sure if this should be turned off or on.

Im wanting to test three audiences:

Jeff Buckley - 18 - 65+ - USA, Canada (audience size = 230 000 people)

Silverchair - 18 - 65+ - USA, Canada (audience size = 120 000 people)

Young The Giant - 25 - 64 - USA, Canada (audience size = 170 000 people)

Should a campaign budget of $30 be enough for this DC campaign do you think? What would be the ideal budget to test these audiences using DC?

My apologies for all the questions, its just everything has changed so much it's basically like starting from scratch.

Thanks so much John

1. Do I turn Automatic Advanced Matching on/off?

I would leave it off.

2. Ive created one campaign which has one ad set targeting Jeff Buckley, how do I create two more ad sets each targeting their own audience? Do I just duplicate that ad set then change the audience accordingly? I see there's an A/B test option, do I use that?

Yes, just duplicate the ad set and change the targeting. I don't use the A/B tool. Because it deals with true split testing (large amounts of data) it is very expensive.

3. My daily budget on the campaign level is $30 per day. When Ive figured out how to run 3 ad sets, how do I spread that $30 evenly over those three ad sets? I have campaign budget optimisation turned on. Will that decide automatically where to spend the money based on the cheapest conversions?

Yes, leave campaign budgeting on and FB will spend the money on the campaigns performing best. If you want a truer split test use ad set budgeting and spend a smaller amount of money on each ad set, then turn off the under performers.

I usually include stories on the first round of ads, and then change placements up in the future based on results. I would not use automatic placements because iOS 14 has made audience network much less valuable. 1200 x 628 is still the most universal size. But you can also use 1080 by 1080 or crop based on placement.

5. Should detailed targeting expansion be turned on or off?

Yes, always. imo.

6. Should I manually change all languages from "all languages" to "english"

Strictly speaking, there is no need for this in an English speaking country. But I have been sometimes doing this of late to protect against the potential of click farms using proxies. But that might just be me being paranoid.

7. In your recent "Dialing in a new campaign" lesson you put the attribution window to 7 days. Is that still the go-to for lead generation?

I do both. But I'm using 1 day more these days, if the goal is leads. It;s one of those things that is worth testing because I've heard of people doing better with either option.

Yep, it's because you had expansion on. Turn it off.

$30 for the entire campaign should work. It's low, because you still technically need to get at least 5 actions per day per adset for the adset to perform well, and you might not with that budget, but it should be enough to determine a quick winner and turn off the underperformers, thus expanding the budget enough to support the winner(s).

My apologies for all the questions, its just everything has changed so much it's basically like starting from scratch.

Thanks so much John

Amazing thanks so much John!

Just a question on editing the budget on the ad set level, the only place I could see how to do that was to set a minimum and maximum daily budget on the ad set level so I put $10 for each of the three ad sets as a minimum daily budget and raised my campaign budget to $40 per day(to more easily hit the minimum 5 subs per day threshold). I left the maximum budget blank in each ad set? Did I do that right? Or would it rather be better to turn off campaign budget optimisation and then set each budget individually on each ad set for the purpose of having a more truer split test as you mentioned. Here's a screenshot.

and then I'm seeing this, not sure if I should mess with this?.

Hi Jean,

Steve here from support.  John asked me to jump in and give you a courtesy reply, as he is away tending to a few things.  He asked me to apologize for the delay as well.

He'll be back at the desk soon and I'll make sure he can get back to you.

Thanks for your patience in the meantime.

Hey Jean,

The options you are seeing for adset budget are because you have campaign budget on. If you want to set budgets on the adset level, turn off campaign budget and you will see different options. You can do it the way you have, I just don't and I think the way I am suggesting is more straight forward algorithmically. That said, it may very well be that there is no difference in the end.

In terms of the message you are seeing, I use custom conversions rather than the conversion API. It has always worked for me but I haven't split tested it both ways to see if there is any difference in performance. It does seem like FB is shifting towards using the conversion API though, but it's nothing urgent. You are free to try it or stick with custom conversions.
