Hi John et al,

Any thoughts on this? My ad was running. They said they shut it down for an incomplete privacy policy. Now it appears that the problem is bigger than I thought.

Advertising is not allowed for websites whose primary purpose is the collection of personally identifiable information (PII) to be used for consumer or promotional marketing, or actions related to such purposes. This includes advertising for pages that link to or redirect to such sites.

I haven't been able to get my ad running on Google either. They finally told me after several weeks that it was disapproved due to copyright infringement of my own material...

Google AdWords doesn't allow the copying or distribution of copyrighted material unless you have consent from the copyright holder, or are otherwise permitted by law.

To send us proof that you have the necessary rights to the copyrighted material, please fill out our copyright documentation form.

Is the first notice from Ad Center? If so, that's new. I have a squeeze page advertised with them as we speak. The only difference is that the squeeze page in question is on an interior page of a site with content on the home page. Adwords requires your squeeze page to have links to additional content. It cuts down in conversions, but it can still be worth while. I'd be surprised to learn that Adcenter is now doing the same thing. You might just call them. They are pretty helpful. At the very least you will figure out what you need to change.

As for Adwords, they are a nightmare. I really don't think they want money from smaller advertisers. They are famous for making life difficult. Still, they have the traffic. Squeeze page strategies are different though fro Adwords. As mentioned, you need to have a content rich squeeze page, clear privacy policies, etc. And they are not helpful.

Internet marketing is an always changing game and these sites are constantly throwing up hoops for us to jump through, but none of it is insurmountable. if it's Ad center, just call them. It will get sorted out.

What really bothers me about this is that your squeeze page has two primary functions:

Collect data

Give away FREE Shit

Insert problem here..... ?

I'd expect this from google, but not so much facebook.  Are you using that free privacy policy I recommended?  Just check to see that you've dotted all the i and whatnot.

In my younger days, I would have called them up to give them the old what for, but that never did me any good.  How's your sweet talking these days, Charley?

Actually, it was Microsoft Network, not Facebook, that dissed me. And I was liking Microsoft so much better than Facebook -- I got more traffic from Microsoft Network and my CPC was better. (I KNOW that Google is a pain in the butt, but I'm still interested in the potential mega-traffic.)

I started using the privacy policy that comes with Aweber (for my PPC landing pages). Is there a problem with Aweber's? I don't think you use Aweber, Steve, but here's what it says: http://www.aweber.com/permission.htm

 

Microsoft's full email to me was:

  • Clearly state the purpose of the information being collected.
  • Include an explicit option for site visitors to opt out of any future communication, email or otherwise.
  • Clearly and prominently include the name of the company that is collecting the personal information.

 

I know it was the lack of a privacy policy that initially got me in trouble. When I added Aweber's and resubmitted, I got the email above. The annoying thing is that I've been running the ad for a while. They initially approved it without a privacy policy.

Oh...  I usually just put a little "Privacy" link on my optin box at the very bottom and again in my footer.

Just as long as people can see what the info is used for.  Mine was good enough for google, so it should be fine for the others.

I checked out your squeeze pages with privacy policies and imitated that before I resubmitted to Adcenter and got the rejection that threw me for a loop.

To make a long story short, it looks like Adcenter and I will be able to work it out. They really do have outstanding customer service.

The longer short story is...

I didn't follow up on Monday or Tuesday because I wanted to talk to someone on the phone, and I lost my voice with a cold. So...THEY followed up with me to make sure I knew what I needed to do to get the ad running again.

It turns out, the only thing the rep wanted me to do was change the link to my privacy policy -- but not to the link that you, me, and a bunch of other Aweber customers use, ironically. She said:

Here is the link that your privacy policy on your webpage needs to go to:  http://www.aweber.com/privacy.htm. If you can achieve this link, we will be able to approve your webpage.

I know...it's lame...it's not a good or applicable privacy policy, and it's not the default one that Aweber gives it's customers to use (http://www.aweber.com/permission.htm). But, at this point, I would place a video on my page of me playing "Skip to My Lou" while standing on my head if that got the ad running. I really don't care! At least she told me what to do!

Totally. I'm glad you will be able to get it sorted and it's that easy. Google is a bunch of Nazi's. It's really disappointing too because I really LOVED their company until I saw how they treat people in the ad network. It's the advertisers that make their world go wrong and they act soooooo authoritarian. Weird, from such an otherwise groovy company. sadly it's mostly the little guys that get hurt. Very often they won't even tell you what the problem is. they will just refer you to their terms and conditions.

I think I mentioned it before but they want me to buy back domains that I don't own any more, build out sites for products I don't sell, so that sites that I promoted years ago are comliant with their terms and conditions, which have changed since I last advertised them which again was years ago. I found it stunning.

Horror stories abound of people who received nasty and unprofessional letters from Adwords over simply selling "make money" products. It's cool that Google wants to have a quality network, but the way they go about it is terrible.

By comparison, Adcenter is soooo refreshing. Unfortunately they don't have nearly as much traffic.
