Now that I've got my 4.0 funnel in place and have been testing Ads with cold traffic for a couple of weeks I'm feeling it might be a good time to apply the best elements of the Ads to a retargeting campaign which is focused on getting people who have visited (or engaged) with my Facebook page in the last 12 months but aren't yet on my mailing list. I would love your feedback on the way I've setup this retargeting campaign up to see if I'm approaching this in the most effective way.. here's what I've done:

Campaign Setup

Objective: Traffic

Ad Set Setup

Traffic: Website

Budget: $5 (daily)

Audience: INCLUDE anyone who have visited or engaged with my FB page in (past 360 days). EXCLUDE anyone who is currently on my mailing list PLUS anyone who has landed on my thankyou page (past 180 days)

Locations: Workwide

Age: 18 - 65+

Placement: Automatic Placements

Optimization for Ad Delivery: Link Clicks

When You Get Charged: Link Click (CPC)

Ad Copy

Just one advert using all the best performing elements from ads tested so far.

Notes/Comments:

According to my Facebook custom audience, I have 5,600 people who have visited or engaged on my FB page over the last 360 days..

Is there anything about my retargeting campaign setup that needs review or attention? .. budget.. length of history for past visitors etc?

Look forward to your feedback.. with thx :~)

Hey Dino,

My apologies for the slow response. I've been off for the weekend.

That all looks pretty good. A couple of things...

Even though I understand the reasoning behind going after a world wide audience, since it's retargeting, I would probably still stick with my target countries. Same for the age. I tend to apply the same filters to most of my retargeting campaigns, with the occasional exception. This is a change from how I used to do it so you've probably heard me say both.

The budget ratio of $5/day for an audience of just 5600 is fairly high. You can totally do it, but it will burn out fast. I probably would do the $5/day because I'm always in a rush but if you want to be conservative and run the ad for longer you could go as low as just $2/day.

Otherwise, it all looks good.

Thanks for that feedback John.. makes good sense. A few more refinement questions plz..

1) I've just gone into my Ad Manager and edited my geo targeting & age settings to be more in sync with my general targeting.. however, when I tried changing my budget amount $2 (currently at $5) I got this error message saying "The budget for this Ad Set must be at least $5.. " any idea why I wouldn't be able to change my daily budget?

2) I've already had a healthy buildup of likes in the last 48 hours for my retargeting post so didn't want to start a whole new ad set and lose my post likes etc.. is it okay to make tweaks to existing ad set or should I be creating a fresh ad set with updated targeting settings?

3) Is my Custom Audience "anyone who has visited or engaged with my FB page in past 360 days" going back too far?

4) How long would run this type of retargeting campaign?

Hey Dino,

I'll answer in context...

Ok, they must have set a minimum. I know I have other clients running campaigns for less but I haven't tinkered with any of those in a while. If that's what it's saying then unfortunately you are stuck at their minimum. You could also try reaching out to support, but they don't make that easy.

2) I've already had a healthy buildup of likes in the last 48 hours for my retargeting post so didn't want to start a whole new ad set and lose my post likes etc.. is it okay to make tweaks to existing ad set or should I be creating a fresh ad set with updated targeting settings?

In my experience editing an ad never works. I'm sure there are exceptions but it seems to be that the algorithm gets confused and doesn't work properly when you edit anything aside from the budget on an existing campaign. For example, I have been using Dynamic Creative a lot recently, and if I shut off options in an existing campaign my price normally goes up. If I take the same remaining options and create a brand new campaign, it almost always goes down. This is consistent with the advice I was given by my ad rep a while back. So unfortunately you'll really want to start the campaign over if you need to refign.

3) Is my Custom Audience "anyone who has visited or engaged with my FB page in past 360 days" going back too far?

It's possible. If you really want to be sure you can create two (or even more) separate custom audiences and create a unique ad set for each. Then you would just exclude. So in other words... Audience A would be people who had visited within 120 days. Audience B would be people who had visited within 240 days but would exclude people in audience A. This would effectively mean that Audience B would only consist of people who had been on the page between 4 and 8 month ago. And so forth...

4) How long would run this type of retargeting campaign?

Until your prices are more than you want to pay.

Hope that helps.
