Hey John - hope all is well.

I was wondering if you might be able to guide me in some direction as far as traffic goes.

I feel that I've actually gotten good at running FB ads in the last year and a half.

However, now, I feel that I'm sorta stumped with promoting my new landing page on FB.  I actually thought this would be a lot easier, cause it's a very niched-down landing page...

I've set this up in a way so that the page itself, along with the emails that follow, I was hoping, would attract a very targeted audience...and hopefully, just turn away people who aren't a fit for our vibe.

But the problem now, I feel is, I'm not sure WHO to target exactly...even though it felt pretty obvious initially.  I think this has more to do with FB changing some algorithm stuff than anything else...but I'm not sure.

It seems that if I stop running FB ads even for a month or two, I come back, and the platform has changed, and now some things that I feel were helping me before, aren't there.

For instance, a few months back, FB had embedded a little checkbox that said something like, "click here to allow FB to expand your audience when appropriate".

What I noticed is when I had that box checked, it would change an audience from a few thousand to several hundred thousand or more.  I don't know what it was doing in the background...but it did bring me leads at a good price.

But that option isn't there now, and my landing page is for an interactive storybook, which leads people to a music video at the end of it.

I've been watching your new FB Ads training in MMM 5, and it seems you're still grouping audiences into the millions.  Should I be doing it that way?

And then from that huge audience, it'll bring in the right people?

When I was using FB ads to promote a free song/download, or even using a video ad, I would get sign-ups fairly quickly and consistently, and pretty easily for $1 - $2 each.  BUT, those ads were bringing in general fans of our music, and my goal now is to really narrow it down to the geek/sci-fi crowd as I've mentioned before.

This time though, I did one run, and I spend $14, only to get 2 conversions.

Then last night I started running again, and narrowed down my audience even more - for instance, one ad group would be this:

Indie Pop Fans
Indie Rock Fans
Synth Pop Fans
+
People Who Like The Nerdist
+
Engaged Shoppers
+
Music Downloads

I'm grouping the three music interests together, instead of apart, because that's the only way I can get the overall audience much bigger.  And even then, the audience range is anywhere from 70,000 - 600,000, depending on the ad group.

With that new campaign, I've got a few signups, and I'm paying about $4.50 per subscriber.

I would have really liked to narrow down this audience much further, but now that the "detailed audience expansion" option isn't there, it would narrow down each ad group maybe 1,000 - 2,000 if I'm lucky...so really, I can only choose "The Nerdist" as the one "sci-fi/weirdo" option in this particular ad group.  Another ad group would be "Star Trek fans", and all other options remain the same.

I add "engaged shoppers" in there, cause I figure they may be more likely to purchase down the line, but maybe that's not necessary.

I know you say to start broad anyway, and maybe I need to start over?

If this helps, here's the link to the landing page...I submitted this for the landing page review and I fixed it up according to your suggestions:

Here are the two ad copies I used...

Maybe I just need to go with a much broader audience at first?  I'm not sure...maybe I'm overthinking this!

But seeing the price being so high per subscriber so soon into the ads running is baffling me and I thought to ask if you may have any suggestions.

Thank you!

Paul

Hey Paul,

It's true, things have shuffled around a bit ever since iOS 14 but it's really not been as dramatic for direct response advertisers as many like to state.

The expand audience option is now included by default in all conversion campaigns and there is no way to change that. I covered this on a coaching call back when it happened. Most of us don't benefit from using it, so I was disappointed to be forced to use it. But it should help you since you had good luck with it.

Yes, I typically try to find large audiences. Not necessarily in the millions, but large. Often in the millions.

You can't come to any conclusions from one campaign that brought in 2 conversions. Anything could be going on there. One thing I have found since iOS 14 is that the learning time is a bit more dramatic. Meaning, it is not uncommon for e to get really expensive leads for the first few days and then see it start to drop.

In general, I think you are trying to narrow things down too much. I would be going for single large audiences, as prescribed in MMM. Not grouping many small ones. The algorithm will do the work. If you are concerned that you are getting subs that are not actually liking the music then you could do something like making the actual conversion goal something deeper in the funnel. Such as your blog post or even a sales page. But you'll need to make sure you are getting a fair bit of traffic for that to be effective.

Hope that helps.

Hey John -

Thanks for the help on this.  Actually, just as you said, the conversions started getting a bit less expensive after a few days, after I tested a few different audiences

...BUT, I do realize I've totally deviated from how you taught FB ads in the first place.

So, I went back to your new FB training here in MMM, and a bunch of my questions are actually answered in there...

Gonna start from scratch, just how you teach it.

With a single audience as you suggest, and let the algorithm do the work.

Thanks again for helping with this, I shoulda really gone back into your FB training a lot sooner.

Hey Paul,

My apologies. I missed this when it came in. Glad to hear that things improved and that the new training answered your questions. Please let me know if I can help with anything else.
