Success from Noise Trade!
The highest conversions for my squeeze page lately have been from the website Noise Trade. I've been getting around 7% (meaning 7% of the people I send messages to sign-up for my e-mail). Which is really good. It's an average of 41% (meaning, on average, 41% open the e-mail, 41% of those click on the link and 41% of those sign-up on the squeeze page). In contrast, my last boosted post on facebook was 0.001% (1 out of every 10,000) and nobody who purchased on CD Baby has ever signed-up. Noise Trade is one of those websites where you upload your music and people can download it. They can get it for free or they can give you a tip of a suggested amount. ($5 an album for example.). Noise Trade keeps 20% plus transaction fees (It usually adds up to around 25-30% for everything). I've included the link to my page below to give you an example of what it looks like. I've gotten a few tips, but I've had more sign-up to my e-mail. Once they've downloaded something, Noise Trade will give you their name and e-mail address, along with their country, zip code and the date they downloaded. You can get access to the information on your control panel and download it as a csv file.
Here's the process I've been using that seems to be working. After receiving an e-mail address from Noise Trade I send the downloader a message inviting them to sign-up for my official list with my squeeze page link. Usually I say something like "Thank you for downloading my music on Noise Trade! Please use the link below to sign-up to my official e-mail. As an extra bonus you will receive 3 free tracks, including one that is not available on Noise Trade." I have purposely not uploaded my latest album to Noise Trade because it contains my main song I'm giving away on my squeeze page. I usually send out messages on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday morning. Also, I only send messages to those who live within the United States. (Mainly because my latest album is cover songs and I'm only allowed to sell it within the U.S.).
The amount of traffic I get on Noise Trade is usually about the same as You Tube, more than Reverb Nation and a lot more than Bandcamp. I'm not sure why, I've never advertised my Noise Trade page.
So, I'm hoping you can find this information useful. I don't know the exact specifics of why it's working, I'm just glad that it is. I'll keep you posted on any changes good or bad. Thanks!

Hey Doug,
Thanks for sharing those stats. One thing you might try is just importing people to a dedicated Aweber list which has a confirmation message which explains that you have another download for them and that all they need to do is click the link (or whatever language makes sense. Hard to say if you would do better or worse, but it might improve things.
See what you can do about those FB stats as well. You should be able to improve things there dramatically.

John,
Thanks for taking my call today! Sorry about my phone, I live on the wrong side of a hill. I'll get that right-side facebook ad set up and let you know how it goes. Like I said, my previous boosted post for my squeeze page got a 0.07% click through rate and $2.85 per engagement cost (I spent $20 and only got 1 sign-up to my e-mail). I changed the wording then it got 0.3% and $1.25 per engagement. The old squeeze page converted at 12% and I'm not sure about the new one yet. The best boosted post rates I have had lately was when I advertised my Patreon page. That got a 1% click through rate and $0.24 per engagement.
I've included a link to my squeeze page below. I will add some Final Fantasy images, like you said, before I advertise on facebook. I recently created some Final Fantasy images using only my album covers, so that should work out great. Thanks a bunch!

Noise Trade is great for when you put out something new because there's always people trolling it looking for new music, so when you're listed as a new release then you'll get a bunch of downloads right away.
I've got separate lists in Aweber for NoiseTrade, Bandcamp, Reverbnation, and live shows because I'm importing those people's emails from a different signup source, so the first couple messages that they get will be different because it's not direct from our squeeze page. Then they'll all get the rest of the auto responder series after that, but the confirmation emails are different because they'll have gone through a different process to get there.
Thanks Mike, and thanks Doug.
Just to clarify Doug, Boosted posts are a great way top extend the reach of your posts. But I wouldn't use them as a way of advertising my squeeze page. You won't get as good of an ROI with a boosted post as you will a straight ad to your squeeze page where you are bidding per click. BUT it's still important that our audience sees our messages popping up in their feed, even if they don't interact. It keeps us on their minds so that the relationship doesn't go cold. For that I think boosted posts are a great and simple option.
And yeah, while your squeeze page does all the right things, I think there is a lot of room to make it more exciting and really sell the world of the game and speak to gamer's existing passions. Right now I don't think what you are offering is all that immediate. It's there, but I had to read a few times to completely follow.
I'd also try to do something about that negative space that forces me to scroll down to read the rest of the page. It will be easy for some to miss that.

Mike,
Thanks for the tips. I'll see if I can do something like that, but for some strange reason Aweber confuses me and it might take me awhile to figure it out.
John,
I've updated my squeeze page. I've added Final Fantasy imagery. I've reformatted the page so you won't have to scroll down to read the rest. I've also changed the wording to hopefully make it more exciting. To be honest, I'm not a wordsmith. I'm a New Age Artist who doesn't have to write lyrics to his songs. So, hopefully the wording on my squeeze page is more understandable and more engaging. Thank you very much for helping me with this!

Doug,
I need to try what you did with noise trade. I have project there and you are right. It's a great way to build a list. I now have to work out a way to bring them over to my funnel. THANKS FOR THE IDEA.!

Hey Doug, I think it looks much better. There is still a bit of messiness in the middle section next to your picture. Looks like the formatting is off. I have attached a screen shot in case that helps.
Maybe give that a tweak and then see if the conversion rate doesn't improve. If it doesn't you might try replacing your image with something Final Fantasy related. It seems to me that that FF is what you are really selling, at least initially. I'd really stress that and then get them to know you personally over the follow up series. Just a thought. But see how what you have does before making that change.

You're welcome. Good luck!
John,
I'll be sending some traffic to the page tomorrow, then I'll have some conversion numbers to work with. If it's too low, I'll do some tweaking and see if it helps. Thanks for the tips and I'll keep you posted on my progress.

Alright, here are the stats from day 1 of my Facebook ad campaign.
I ran 2 right column ads, both with 4 pictures each. So, essentially I did split testing of 8 different variations of the same ad. The first ad my targeting was very specific for a potential audience of only 100,000. My second ad was more broad targeting to a potential audience of 1,000,000.
In one day I reached over 5,000 with specific targeting and over 13,000 with broad targeting.
The images that related to the likes of my audience did better than the images of my face. Not surprised, but I had to try just in case. In fact, it was the image that had a white background and no red border that did the best.
The ads that were very specific targeting to a smaller audience performed the best. The best click through rate I got on my broad targeting was 0.09%, while the best click through rate on my specific targeting got 0.28%. Not the best, but specific targeting was 3 times higher than broad targeting.
My highest cost per click was $0.48 on one of the broad targeting ads. The cheapest was $0.24 on one of the specific targeting ads.
I have paused all ads execept for the best performing one and will keep it running for another day. I've also decreased my maximum bid. Hopefully the click through rate will improve and my cost per click will go down. I've also done a boosted post, and will see if it compares to the right column ads.
I noticed there was an option for a mobile news feed ad. I do have a mobile friendly squeeze page, but I decided not to try it just yet. Maybe next time.
Stay tuned for day 2!

Thanks for the info Doug .24 cents a click isn't bad at all. It could be better, but it could also work at that price if your page is converting well enough. Great start at the very least and I assume that's a big improvement?

Yes John, that was an improvement from the last time I did a right column ad on facebook.
Here are the stats from day 2 of my Facebook ad campaign.
I chose the best ad from day 1 and ran it for an another day to only specific targeting. It got much better results. It reached another 4,000 people and the click through rate was 2.2% at a cost of $0.23 per website click.
Besides the right column ad, I also did 2 boosted posts that were slightly different on different days. So, basically I did a split test on the boosted posts as well. The first post, on day 1, was just to the people who liked my page plus their friends and had a click through rate of 0.5% at a cost of $0.83 per link click. I'm not counting post likes, page likes or shares, just link clicks. The second boosted post, on day 2, I used specific targeting and it was a huge surprise. It had a click though rate of 7.0% at a cost of $0.06 per link click. That's crazy! I've never had one convert that well. Also, 98% of those who clicked were Males between the ages of 25 and 34. Not surprised there, I'm advertising music from a video game released in 1992.
As for my squeeze page, it converted at only 5% on day 1, but then jumped to 18% on day 2. Good improvement, but still not the greatest. Either I'm not explaining myself well enough in the ads or there's something on my squeeze page that's scaring them away. I'll have to do some more testing to know for sure. I'll try some squeeze page split testing to try and figure out what's not working. Also, I basically paid $1.19 per e-mail sign-up on day 2. So, if 5% of them take me up on my up-sale, I can make my money back.
Overall, I was quite pleased with my click through rates and costs per click, but not so pleased with my squeeze page conversions. Looks like I can get people to my squeeze page, but can't convince them to sign-up. I just wish that I had done my boosted posts and right column ads on different days so that I would know which converted better.

That's really awesome Doug. Just goes to show how important testing is. That's a crazy jump. 18% really isn't bad. It can be better, but that's something you can work with.
I would really try dropping your picture on the squeeze page and leading with the idea that you are selling an experience that is related to the game. Then win people over as an individual in the follow up series. Worth a try anyway. I feel like there is a break there. If I was clicking the ad I would be doing so because of my relationship with the game, but somehow your picture being front and center makes it more about you as the individual and because that is inconsistent with the reason I clicked, it might be a sticking point. But you won't know until you try it
Well done.

John,
I just tested my squeeze page and unfortunately found out that my pop up script was activating when someone clicked on the download button. This definitely would have affected my conversion rate. Also, I've taken your suggestion and I've changed the pictures. I will for sure advertise again and see if I can improve my conversions now that the page is working better. I'll also keep you posted on my follow-up series and see if I'm getting good open and click through rates. Thanks a bunch!

Shit, I'm seeing the download button problem on the squeeze page too. I'm going to have to remove it now .
Any tips on how to code that properly?
This is odd. I haven't seen this before and now it's happening in multiple instances without any changes. i wonder if it's a browser update or something. Can you send me a link to a page where this is happening?
