Hey everyone I just wanted to share a great strategy I learned from the Insider Circle's own Carlos Castillo:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?.....n10xhvkLiQ

I followed the steps in his instructional video and have had a great response. I started from 0, and in less than two weeks I have gained 490 twitter followers and 48 new subscribers just from twitter. (I don't know if that's a lot, but these are my first subscribers EVER, so I'm pretty pumped). The best part is that there's a real interaction with the followers--lots of great feedback and conversations.

One key factor is the language in the auto-response. I'm using "Great to meet you. Here's a free download, if you would like to listen to our music: http://www.eliandthestrawmanmusic.com. Enjoy!" and I get a lot of "thank you!" responses.

I used Pandora and Songsa to search out artists that are in line with my band's sound, so as to target their followers.

Hope someone else can benefit from this. It can be time consuming, but at least it's free.

Tam

Hey Tam,

Yeah, it's an effective strategy and one i covered in MMM 2.0. I didn't cover it in 3.0 mainly because I don't personally use it any more as it's not as scalable as paid advertising. But yeah, it's free :-)

Hi Tam,

Thanks for turning me onto this.

I tried it out and in 5 minutes literally I had two great comments on Soundcloud, two new email sign ups and one album buy at bandcamp = 12$!

And that was without the auto DM which I just set up now.

Looks good so far :)

How are you doing?

Thanks

Soren

Hey, sorry about the late reply... was busy soaking up the sun in Costa Rica.

We've had a great couple of months with twitter--gained over 2800 followers and 250 subscribers in two months. Like I said, the interaction has been fantastic, with several purchases of our demo tracks on Bandcamp (we don't even have an album out yet) and lots of people asking when/where they can buy the album. We just played our second show ever, and about half of the people who showed up were twitter followers and their friends. They came and introduced themselves--and just like that, we've got ourselves a fan base!

The only drawback is not being able to scale up. But since we don't have a product to sell yet, this is a nice way to ease into the whole process...

Glad to hear you're having success too!

I set up the automated DM now and have gained about 45 new newsletter signups in one week. Lots of positive DM's back. No complaints. Just sold 2 cd's to one of them = 40$.

Just thought I would share these results with you.

Best

I've been trying the followback strategy without the auto-DMs for the past six days. I'm following about 25 new people a day and getting around 30 new followers a day. So, something is working there. I'm not using the auto-direct messages yet, but I've been steadily putting out links to articles on my Twitter and Facebook feed and then using Snip.ly to put a call to action to check out my band's paranormal pop culture podcast (where we have a new song every week). Our next EP release is going to be March and we'll be branding it as the musical aspect part of our podcast experience and marketing it like that. But I've already seen an uptick in downloads since starting the Twitter strategy and I've already been invited as a guest on a podcast next week to talk about our music.

I'm thinking about trying the auto-DM. Soren, what does your auto-DM say?

That's fantastic guys. Guess I'll need to update the old MMM 2.0 lesson this is based on and update it. Well done everyone.

Thanks for sharing this.

We're not ready to use it yet, but I shared it with a friend who has tried it to increase sign ups for her blog. It has worked like a dream, so I guess it's definitely worth trying as a way of driving free traffic (well, free unless you pay for the DM service) to a squeeze page.

Alright, I'm going to give the auto-DM stuff a try. Followbackr.com is 99 cents a month so I'm going to give that a shot (I don't do the auto scheduling of posts, I like to engage in real time) but I think it's worth trying. I'm seeing a lot of new followers lately and some more podcast downloads so I'm gonna get a little more aggressive and see what happens!

Okay, I finally just joined social oomph because it's not expensive and followbackr was suspended by Twitter. And it's $6 a month for five accounts, so I can use it for personal, podcast, band, and my drummer can use it as well. So, I was just being cheap. But when you're running a business every penny counts I guess, that $6 is an extra CD you have to sell every month at a show.

So, the results?

I started using Tweepi the second week of February following about 100-150 people a day who follow paranormal podcasts (that's what I'm promoting right now, we do an hour long podcast with a new song every week and we're releasing EPs of fully produced versions of three of those songs every 3 months - going in the studio tomorrow to finish up the latest batch.) Then the third week of February I joined socialoomph and started auto-DMing people with links to the podcast, I'm also posting several articles a day on Twitter and usually one on Facebook using snip.ly, which lets you put a call to action (to go to your website) for any article that you share.

So, in the past month, I've gone from 900 followers at the beginning of February to 2436 today, so that's a massive improvement. I'm following around 2000 people though, so my Twitter feed is nigh illegible, so you really have to depend on friends lists if you still want to use it for the fun/social aspect of it.

I've been pushing downloads of the podcast and iTunes subscriptions instead of email subscriptions and we've seen growth from 5 downloads a day (with a high of 50-some when we were featured as an iTunes New and Noteworthy podcast) to regularly 50 to 80 downloads a day since starting the strategy and it's only about ten minutes of effort (I spent twice as much time writing this post than I did following and unfollowing people on Twitter today.)

I've also had some sales on iTunes as a result of people hearing songs on the podcast. Anyway, Twitter is a great strategy that I was always afraid of because I didn't want to be one of those auto-DM people. But here's the thing, the only people that care are other marketers on social media. I'm only following people who already like similar things to what I'm offering and when they DM me, I look at their profile, DM them back something relevant, and start a conversation. That's exactly what Twitter is for (not just for jokes and celebrity rants) so I'm not being annoying. Plus, it's my personal account that I've been using since 2007 so I'm real on there (I talk about beer, concerts, tweet at my friends, etc...)

I'm bringing my drummer in on it. I'm excited to go through the new sales funnel lesson because we need one for the podcast and we're revamping the one for our band with the new release. Either, Twitter was great. I wanted to experiment for a month and see if it helped downloads and it has. I'm going to add it to my music squeeze page strategy for our new release in two weeks.

Great to hear!

I was also a bit skeptical about the auto-DM thing. But you're right--following people with such a niche interest makes it less spammy and more "connection/relationship". I get many messages every day saying "wow, thanks" etc, and we've had several blog reviews, spins on (somewhat obscure) radio shows, and paid downloads off our "pay what you want" bandcamp page... of our DEMOS.

Out of the 3963 followers we've gained in about 3 months, only 2 have even asked what kind of music it is!! And one was kind of pissed about being followed by strangers. Not bad numbers.

Can you personalize your auto-DMs?

I use ManageFlitter to unfollow people who don't follow me back, which let's me follow more people in turn. I personally message them all so that I can put their name in the message, like "Hi Pete...". It works really well that way too and if you just copy-paste the DM from a Word or OpenOffice document it doesn't take that long. Auto-DMs would still appeal though, as then I'd have to spend almost no time sending the initial message.

Hey Elmo, I took a look at my socialoomph settings but I don't see any way to personalize the auto-DM. I think that might be one of the drawbacks. Other services (like maybe @justunfollow) have the option but they might include their signature in your DM so it's really obvious it's an auto-DM.

Question: does ManageFlitter allow you to unfollow people in bulk? I use tweepi but you have to click each person (in the free version at least).

Hi Tam!

I would think that personalizing is very important. I'll probably just stick to sending the DMs myself. It doesn't take too long if you just copy-paste the main message and put in the name for each DM.

ManageFlitter does have a batch select option in the paid version. I haven't used it though, as I only recently upgraded from the free version.

I haven't personalized the auto-DMs, but i haven't found it that necessary. I just respond personally to every single person that says "thanks" or something after the auto-DM. I've gotten in some long conversations, but they usually end with people downloading the podcast, which is great. I also use SumoMe on the podcast page to ask people to join an email list for the podcast and a whole bunch have joined, but we still haven't created a podcast-specific newsletter (we haven't set up a funnel for the podcast yet.)

I'm going to start applying this strategy to my proper music sales funnel as well. We just released a new recording a couple weeks ago but I haven't updated the squeeze page or anything yet to talk about the new EP, so that's the next thing on my agenda. We already have a monetized funnel for the band and I wanna see if pushing people to the squeeze page via Twitter this month has any effect.

I do the auto-dm thing as well. It works wonders.

I've been using this script for a year or so and I always wake up to an inbox full of messages back to me.

target influencer = x

"fan of X? you might like one of our videos. {video link} - thanks for the follow —dave (drums)"

-

When I finish my sales funnel and post my new site I"ll have it point to my squeeze page of course instead of the video.

When people write back they tend to say the same things over and over again.  If they say something positive I ask them for their email address. If they haven't said something positive I ask them to tell me what they think of the song. When they tell me and it's positive I ask for their email address.  I have a clipboard program where I have all my responses saved.

I've collected over 300 email addresses this way... and man do I hope I can just use paid advertising from now on to collect emails with your system john. That was a painful grind.

-

Oh and btw this same strategy works amazing on Instagram and Google+ minus the auto dms if you have the right software. Also double check that everyone is using iMacros or some other browser automation software with their Twitter follow/unfollow service or that stuff can become way too time consuming.

Yeah, it is a grind, which was one of the reasons I didn't include it  in 3.0. It was also one of those strategies that required a lot of support as platforms changed, and Twitter made changes. For a while there you couldn't send live URLs. But hey, if your budget is limited then it obviously works.

However for me, paid advertising is the way to go simply because of how automated and "white hat" it is. I also personally became very skeptical of any Twitter account that had as many followers, as people they were following. But that's probably just the marketer in me.
