Hey everyone. I wanted to help kick off this community by posting something that I'm sure will be really useful to everyone here. In fact you can put it to use as soon as you're done reading this post!
One of the first things everyone should do when joining and participating in a forum such as this one, is to create a signature file or "Sig File" for short.
Simply put, a sig file is nothing more than a line of text that follows everything that you post inside of the forum. If you dig a little bit deeper though, you'll find that a sig file is a highly leveraged and powerful FREE TRAFFIC source. While the free part is pretty much self explanatory and should appeal to everyone, here's where the leverage happens:
You see, everything you post in a forum is archived and takes on a life of it's own. In other words, it will be there until the end of time (or the end of the internet !). Now if that post happens to become a really popular post, with a lot of relevant contributions from others on the given topic, it may get picked up and attain a high (even page one high) ranking in the search engines. Now that post will have exposure that reaches far beyond just the scope of the forum!
Now here is how it becomes a traffic source for you:
Your sig file doesn't have to be just a boring old line of text. In fact it can be a really exciting line of text that you can link directly back to your own web site!
So when you put all of the pieces together (leverage + traffic source) you're looking at the potential of receiving website traffic both from inside the forum itself plus all of the people who find the forum post via the search engines. For every one post you have in that forum, you'll also have a one-way link directly to your website!
As you can imagine, as time rolls on and as you make more contributions to the forum, you are increasing the amount of potential traffic to your website from one stupid, simple text link that sucks people into your website like magic. Hell... five years from now you could still be receiving traffic from posts you don't even remember writing!
So here is how you put this thing into play:
When writing a sig file there are a few angles you could take.
1) You could write something that creates curiosity that almost defies people to not click your link. (Sometimes people just can't help themselves. Take advantage of that.)
2)You can be totally up-front with your link... "I made my first youtube video! Click here"
3)Or you can use flat-out Shock n' Awe! (see my sig for an over-the-top display of click sucking) 🙂
Some things to keep in mind...
Not all forums allow links in the sig file. However John Oszajca is a marketer and totally gets the power behind this. So by all means...link away.
Also, your sig file is the "appropriate" place for shameless self promotion. Regular posters tend to not like topics that are clearly promotional, so sticking to the sig file is your best bet.
You can edit your sig any time you want and what's really neat is that every post you have made in the past will be updated with your new sig (as if free and leveraged wasn't enough )!
So here's how you do it:
First go to the very top of this page and click 'Profile'. Next scroll all the way over to the right where it says 'Setup Your Signature' and click it.
This will open up a rich text editor where you can type your text, change the color and stylize to your heart's content. When you want to put the link in just select all of your text, click the little picture of a chainlink and type:
'http://www.bockbock.egg' (without the apostrophes... and your real web addy of course) and that's it.
Might be a good idea to select the little drop-down menu and select "opens up a new window" (for the clicker's sake).
That's pretty much it. Enjoy the forums. Post early and often and watch the traffic trickle in. Go back to every forum you participate in and rock your sig file.
Look forward to hearing your thoughts and sharing ideas with y'all from now on!
-Steve
Great advice Steve. I have literally generated thousands of leads from forums. It means you have to actually contribute (as you have shown a great example of), but it can be a great way to get some free traffic... and even have some fun if you liek the topic.
This forum is brand spanken' new, but it will eventually be a huge, and very targeted, database. So get those sig files going folks.
Thanks Steve for sharing the tip.

My pleasure, Sully. I think we're all in for some game-changing revelations here. Nice sig file !
Great stuff! How do you feel about putting graphics in your sig?
On some of the guitar gear forums I frequent, some people put these huge photos of their guitars or amps or cats in their sig and you have to scroll half a page to get past them - that's clearly too much. But perhaps something on the subtler side could be a good visual draw.
Cheers, and glad to be here!
Graphics can be great. What you might try is a graphic banner that has text in it. Text tends to get more clicks than an image all by itself, but the text size is limited in a forum sig so by making a graphic banner that has large text (similar to that of the forum) with a strong call to action, might get you a nice click through rate. But of course, you won't know until you test.

That's a great idea. Funny too because I was just this second messing with my sig and muttering to myself 'how do I make the text bigger'.
Thanks!
Not to get too techy on ya, but if you wanted to increase the text size click the button in the rich text editor that says "HTML". when you click it, it will see the raw html code for your sig. Where you see the opening 'span' tag, it will say span style="". In between the quotes type: font-size: 12pt;
The 12pt refers to the text size. Just make sure you use the colon and semi-colon as shown above. Hope this helps.

Awesome! I didn't even see the html button until you pointed it out .
Thanks for the tip!
Great advice, thanks!
It's actually very simple and logical from a SEO point of view, but somehow easy to overlook as well...
Now all I need is this splash-page! I'll be working on this shortly since it seems to be the basis of this course.
Nice one Jap Jap! The bar has been raised!
The only thing I can think of that might be a draw back to a graphic sig is that you don't get the SEO value from keywords as would in a regular text link. I'll admit straight out that I'm not even up to amateur status when it comes to SEO, so I may not know what I'm talking about here.

Makes me wonder if I type "sweet ass rock and roll", will your site be on page one? 😉
It's true that you get maximum SEO value if you use text. But there is still some value from a graphic link. With that said, if th CTR (click through rate) was higher with a graphic I would go with a graphic.
But keep in mind that Google's spiders cannot crawl a password protected page like this so it's irrelevant in this particular forum. The benefit here is traffic.

Hmmm..interesting discussion. I imagine you want to focus your sig content towards the forum you are posting in (like the one below).
Question:
1) Have any of you had any success in fan forums? If does anyone know of any good ones in the folk rock, alt-country, Americana realm?
2) If yes to question 3, would this work or is to damn long?
"I Makes Music That Makes Sense And Makes Your Beer Taste Better! So if You Like That Stuff Along With Folk Rock, Alt-Country and/or Americana, I'm Your Man. Visit Corey Koehler Music Now To Get Your Free Tracks!"
Got something music on your mind? I have a music blog called Musicgoat.com too. Come and submit a guest post.
Hi Corey,
As John mentioned, this forum is password protected, so backlink juice is out for this forum, but any other forum you participate in m ay still be fair game for backlinks. You can certainly use keywords to fortify.
Yes, it would be a great idea to tailor your sig message to the type of forum you are involved with. For instance, everyone in this forum has invested their own hard-earned money to be on the leading edge. Therefore they can be categorized as "serious musicians".
If that's who you're targeting, you will tailor the message accordingly.
However if you involved in a forum where people are discussing certain types of music (or a band's forum that sounds like yours) you'll tailor the message to reflect the content of the forum.
If not for any other reason, you do this to get the "right" kind of attention to your website. You know... the people who will be most likely to sign up for your offer.
Hope that clarifies things.
As far as the number of links. It' usually best to to use one, targeted link. Here's why...
Unless you have tracking set up to know which link was clicked, you won't know which one performs the best. If your analytics reporting says the click came from http://www.website/forum ,you'll know that people are a clicking a link, but not sure which one.
Of course both links won't go to the same page, so that's one way to check it, but it also complicates things (imho)
Your best bet is to design a short, snappy, relevant and powerful message that causes curiosity or clearly communicates where they are going to end up.
Be creative with it. Have a little fun

Thanks Steve! Anyone know of any great fan forums out there - or where to look - for me to jump into a conversation?
Got something music on your mind? I have a music blog called Musicgoat.com too. Come and submit a guest post.
I haven't found too many uber active fan forums (but I'm sure they are out there). You might consider looking laterally. Meaning, find out what "lifestyle" factors might be appealing to your demographic and find forums that are based around that.
For example, I'm doing Americana stuff these days so I am in the process of trying to tap into people who are interested in Route 66 and the romance that people associate with it. So hypothetically I could go into a forum on Route 66 and have a sig that said "Next time you take that trip down Route 66, make sure you have John Oszajca on your ipod..." or something similar.
You can find a list of keyword specific forums at http://www.big-boards.com/
There are also some very active gear forums for musicians if you wanted to reach out specifically to musicians such as http://www.gearslutz.com/board/ and last I checked they allowed sig links.

Yeah,
I'm doing the pop- punk/ punk n' roll thang, so I try to look for forums where people are talking bands in the genre... even if it's bands I don't like (or like being compared to )
I'll look for stuff where people are talking about Social Distortion, Green Day, Supersuckers, that sort of thing.
Along the lines of John's lifestyle approach, it helps to think about things associated with your 'typical' fan.
In my case I don't have to look much further than nautical star tattoos and Pabst Blue Ribbon
I'm joking of, course (or am I?) but if you start to think laterally, you'll find all kinds of creative ways to get in front of people.
You will occasionally run in to issues where sig links just aren't allowed. It's a shame, but alot of times forums are run by people who either loathe marketing, or really just don't understand it. Yet they'll ask for donations or post obnoxious banner ads to 'keep their doors open' so to speak. Kind of hypocritical if you ask me, but it is what it is...
Sorry, wandered off topic there
