Hey everyone, I hope this question will help myself and others understand FB pixels better.

If I am doing this correctly, in the MMM theme, on any squeeze page that I create, under “Custom Fields,” I should select “fb_pxl_conversion_code” and post the pixel for my Facebook ad account in a custom field.

Next, on the “Thank You page” for people who opted in, I should post the same code, plus a conversion tracking pixel.

When I did this, even after I opened up the thank you page on several different browsers, in my Facebook ad account the conversion tracking pixel still showed that it was not active or unverified. To remedy this I placed the conversion pixel code in the Facebook Conversion Pixel Plugin instead of the “Custom Fields”  and then after clicking on the webpage, the pixel in Facebook became active.

So, it works now, but my concern is that if the conversion tracking pixel did not work in the MMM theme custom fields area, is the general conversion code that needs to be placed on all pages of the site going to be working, or do I need to place them in the Facebook Conversion Pixel Plugin as well, or some other area of the website.

Also, should I have both of these pixels on the Thank You page, or just the conversion pixel?

Any advice is welcome.
Thanks, Kevin

Hi Kevin, can you tell me what lesson you are getting the instructions from so I am clear and up to speed on what you are referring to? Unless I'm misunderstanding you should not be using the custom field for this. You want to place the conversion tracking code on the page people are taken to immediately after entering their name and email address. That code should not be on any other page. If it is, your conversion stats will be off.

Thanks John, that clears up one mistake right away. I will stop trying to use custom fields for this, and just use the Facebook Conversion Pixel plugin.

I am only using the conversion pixel on the thank you page and it is working.

But my confusion is coming from the Facebook Custom Audience Pixel instructions. It says you get one pixel only for the entire ad account, and has the instruction “Copy the code below and paste it between the <head> and </head> in your website code. The pixel will track visits to every page of your website.”

I may be confusing this with what is needed for remarking campaigns. Is the above needed for Remarking, or some other purpose where I would need add a custom audience code to every page plus the conversion pixel on the Thank You page?

Do I only need the one conversion pixel for tracking website conversions?

Thanks, Kevin

Hey Kevin,

Ah, I see where you are confused. The custom audience pixel and the conversion pixel are totally different. The conversion pixel should just go on your thank you page. The custom audience pixel is site wide like you described. The custom audience pixel allows you to re-target people who have been on your site in a number of different ways.

For example, with retargeting you can create an audience that consists of people who have been on your blog and who have not visited the post-order thank you page. Or of a variety of audience rules. You could even target people who just saw one particular post. I tend to just use it to retarget people who have been on my blog or have already signed up to the list, and I promote a sales page with it.

Here is a video that shows you one way to insert the code. There are also plugins that can help you do it.
