I just did something I haven't done in a while which was to check my referral traffic on my squeeze page johnomusic.net
I thought I'd share the top five referral sources over the last 30 days. I thought it was interesting.
1. Youtube
2. MusicMarketingManifesto.com
3. JohnOszajca.com
4. EzineArticles.com
5. Facebook.com
1. Youtube shouldn't have surprised me but it did. I have a good number of views out there on my collective videos but I have had little faith in the CTR. Nonetheless, there you go.
2. MMM.com maked obvious sense as I reference the squeeze page all the time. Kind of surprised it wasn't the number 1 source.
3. JohnOszajca.com is my official site and this also makes a lot of sense as I regularly present calls to action that link to my squeeze page.
4. EzineArticles.com shows everyone that has not had luck with EZA that the site does still drive traffic.
5. Facebook makes obvious sense as well. For what it's worth, I'm only currently active on Twitter in regards to MMM. With MMM I get more traffic from Twitter than Facebook.
6. I listed this just because I thought it was interesting but the sixth biggest referrer was Baidu.com. Baidu.com was interesting in that it's China's number 1 search engine and I have done nothing to optimize for it at all and they are reportedly stricter than Google, which would make sense in that they censor a lot of content to begin with. But it was cool to see that someone out there in a foreign market like that was searching for me.
So where is your traffic coming from?
If you feel like sharing, please look at your stats for the last 30 days and share the top 5 referring sites. Leaving out email and organic. I Think it would be interesting to see what is actually working for different people and whether or not we see similar results across the board or if things vary.

Good idea. I use google analytics. Here's mine for the past 30 days:
1. Twitter
2. Youtube
3. Pinterest
The rest are all from random sites due to some pretty heavy blog commenting I was doing last month.

How do we find our stats?
Totally depends what system you are using to track. You should have something in place on all of your sites to track traffic. I use either google analytics or wordpress stats plugins. Often both. But there are many different solutions out there. Your web host probably has some kind of stats info as well, but they tend to include robots and spiders which makes it look like you have tens of thousands of visitors when you really have much less. That varies though.

Thats interesting that we both have Youtube up near the top. Youtube has been a point of a lot of debate. Some people feel it gets them no traffic, others swear by it. And as i mentioned, I don't use Twitter much for my music currently, but I see a lot of traffic from Twitter from MMM. Also very interesting to see that Pinterest is a big source for you as it's a new platform and not many musicians are reporting a lot back either way on Pinterest. Do you have a conscious strategy or are you just using it casually?

For http://www.charleylanger.net, my top 5 referring sites (according to google analytics) are:
1. YouTube
2. Facebook
3. Twitter
4. click.cheapstuff.com
5. answers.yahoo.com
I frankly don't know how click.cheapstuff.com and answers.yahoo.com got linked to me, but I get significant traffic from those two. Could those somehow be related to advertizing on Microsoft Network? I have deliberate YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter strategies. The top three are consistent with what I've been experiencing for quite a while.
Hey John-
I've barely used Pinterest at all. I literally just toyed with it as per your suggestions right after last month's module and haven't done much with it since. Though, after seeing these stats I'm going to do more regular posting and adding for sure.

I recently did a 90 day report on keyword searches for IndpendentRockstar.com. Thought you guys might find some of these entertaining. Here are my favorites (these are all things people searched in google and ended up on my site):
Scott, those were hilarious. You can't make stuff like that up. Well, you can, but it isn't nearly as funny: "best field trips for those who make the dean's list" or "why does so many parsons think im dumber than my kat?" (Oh...here's a nice lady with a telephone wrapped around her head. I'll ask her.)
lol - yeah that's true Charley. I never would've imagined some of these. Just ran that report again. Here are a few more that have rolled in:
negative rockstar
long live the king rockstar
how to get abs if you don't have one
carrot top is unfunny
are musicians wastes
can a person living with you create a lot of bad luck for you
if you dont have abs dont beach
reasons why abs are hot
But to get back on the original topic... My audience is musicians and not music fans, so it's kinda apples and oranges, but for what it's worth, my top 5 referring sites for IndependentRockstar over the past 90 days are:
I've gotten thousands of visitors from StumbleUpon over the life of IR without doing anything. I should probably put some effort into encouraging more SU action...
Yeah, I don't spend that much time on stumbleupon, but I hear that a lot. Dean Fields was telling me that when bookmarking he always adds stumble upon because thats the one place he always sees traffic from every time he ads a bookmark to a new post.

Yeah I sent an email to my list for my last post with the stumpleupon link shortener that ads the stumbleupon bar. The one downside is that it makes it harder to track who's coming from the email and what, if any, extra traffic came from sharing on SU. I'll take a closer look before I send my next email to see if there was any benefit. At the least, I do think it's worth it to have a SU share button on posts. The average time on site for SU traffic is pretty low, as should be expected. Still I'll take the extra 4k visitors to the site. Here's a good post on generating SU traffic for anyone interested: http://blog.kissmetrics.com/in.....umbleupon/
Thanks Scott. I'll check it out.

I'm seeing a trend with "abs" coming up on those searches. The marketing side of me wonders if you should place a banner for some sort of 'six pack abs' product on your site and see what happens! I think having 'rockstar' in your domain is bringing you up for perhaps 'celebrity' related terms that go beyond your musician audience....celebrities are all about the abs. Unless they're Jack Black.
Yeah, good call! I wouldn't have drawn it up that way, but if I have people hitting the site every day looking to 'get ripped at home' then I might as well see what I can do with it. I've actually started putting some ads up on some of the fitness-related posts. I'm waiting on some approvals for affiliate programs. Been working on finding opportunities to monetize some of the posts on an individual basis so that they're well targeted. I let you guys know if I have any good breakthroughs. I think it can be a good idea to try and discern what people are looking and break it down into separate pages rather than to just look at the site as a whole.
Rockstarabs.com? Do I smell a best selling clickbank product?

yus! I'm guessing you're joking, but if you're not you should contact my buddy Jim who wrote those posts. He's been looking into creating products. He has some legit insight and is a pretty good writer.
I was joking. But I wouldn't be shocked if someone could make a million dollars on that idea 🙂

Mine are mostly coming from Facebook and YouTube, but I´m not getting enough from either. I get a few from EZines, but have found a couple of specialty on-line magazines that are targeted towards the kind of stuff I do (SomosPrimose.com is one), and am writing articles for them. Usually, when I have an article up, I get better results from them than from EZines.
