Would anyone like to share music on our blog and (maybe) get some new subscribers?

My daughter Flo has been publishing a weekly blog for just over a year. She gets somewhere in the region of 1000 'hits' per blog post, but not many subscribers.

She has been thinking about how to change it up a bit and has come up with the idea of giving free tracks from featured artists. Actually, the idea came to her when she was approached by the publicist of a fairly well-known singer-songwriter and they got talking about sharing some of his music, so she had to think through the process. She is setting that up for publication next week.

The aim is that her existing readers will become subscribers and then every future free track offer will add more subscribers.

What became obvious to her is that, since Aweber relaxed its rules on double opt-in for imported lists, if anyone signs up to receive a free download via the blog, she can pass the subscriber details on to the artist to add to their list too. So her subscribers become the artist's subscribers too - sharing is caring!

So I guess this is a shout-out to anyone who might like to support this experiment and possibly gain a few new subscribers too, by letting her give away your free download in return for email details of anyone who subscribes for the download.

All she needs is the url of the zip file on your wordpress site, a youtube link for a video of your song (or one of them if you are giving away more than one) and a few paragraphs about who you are and what you do - nothing too fancy, just whatever you are already using.

Hoping someone might want to give this a whirl - there's nothing to lose, all genres welcome and it'll either work brilliantly or it won't

Deb x

PS Has anyone done this before? Did it work?

By the way. this is the first blog with a free download - its James Cottriall, winner of 'The Voice' in Austria amongst other things. Just to give you an idea of the sort of thing Flo is aiming to do.

Hey Deb,

Sorry for the slow response. I've been traveling for the last 5 days with very little internet access. Finally back at the desk now.

Thanks for thinking of everyone in the IC with this. The only thing you want to be aware of is that everyone needs to be aware that when they sign up to Flo's mailing list they are also signing up to the other artist's list/ You can import people without the double opt in, but you can't just add people that didn't understand that would happen. Otherwise the importing artist will likely get a lot of spam complaints and it will cause potential problems for that person.

That said, because people are opting into Flo's list, it shouldn't be an issue for her.

The page looks great.

Thanks!

I'll bear that in mind and make sure that people know that they may hear more direct from the artist. I'd hope they'll be happy about that 🙂

Hi

I thought I'd share an update with you. Flo has been sharing music from a number of different artists over the past few months and it seems to be going down well. The number of downloads has been low but growing for each artist and a few of them have actively used the blog to promote their music too.

Flo is now creating her own download chart - just for a bit of fun and to encourage sharing and downloading. It also allows her to re-share previously created content during the summer when she takes a bit of a break from blogging.

Here is the blog that starts the ball rolling with the Angry Baby chart (Angry Baby is the name of her blog)

http://www.angrybaby.co.uk/who.....by-charts/

I'll let you know how it goes.

Flo is on the look out for songs to share in the autumn. She has a few lined up, but if anyone wants her to share their music, just get in touch and she'll do her best.

Deb x

PS one of the artists, Charly, is represented by a PR agency that has been so impressed with Flo's work they have paid her to produce a biog for Charly and have given her a summer job supporting Charly's promo campaign too. Charly is a country/pop artist, so if anyone has any insight into where to promote Charly's music, we'd be very grateful for your advice.

That's awesome Deb. I've been encouraging artists to share other artist's music like that for years but haven't seen anyone do it. I think it's great! And the proof is in the pudding. So cool that she turned her marketing efforts into a summer job. Good things ahead, I'm sure.

Thanks John.

Flo learns a lot from doing this and is growing her list at the same time. She is able to apply and test the techniques you teach even though she doesn't have material of her own that she is ready to offer yet. By the time she has developed her own music she will have lots of resources through which to promote it, so its a bit back to front but all good.

It's also interesting to see how the artists and bands that she has included in her blog go about promoting themselves too. Some are very active, others less so.

None of the people she has included so far are from MMM.

Her plan for the summer (as well as her summer job in PR) is to really work out her promo strategy for her blog. She has been writing it for over a year now and gets 1000-2000 readers. She wants to work out what encourages people to subscribed (such as the free music) and then focus on that for the future while staying true to the music she enjoys writing about.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Just a quick update - Flo continues to blog. She has just linked up with a Canadian-based blog that links to a blog aggregator site called The Hype Machine, which is considered to be quite influential.

Flo has included an artist that she met through MMM and is now being approached by several artists each week. She only blogs once a week and is quite choosy about what she includes.

It's interesting to see how different artists use the blog to promote their work - or not, in some instances. She also encourages them to support each other. Some are very active, others less so. Either way, there is some excellent music out there and it's a real privilege to be able to share it and to give the people who promote it a little bit of help along the way.

Thanks again for all your support

Deb x

I just checked out the website and it looks like a cool concept.  I just emailed Flo a link to download my last album and some info on my music.  Thanks!
