A Few Words About Domain Registrars and Hosting Companies

What's up y'all?  I just wanted to throw in a few things worth mentioning that I've seen and learned in dealing with dozens of registrars and hosting companies as a web designer.  These are just opinions, so use your own judgement - but here's my experience:

First off, bigger is generally better.  You're much more likely to run into problems with smaller companies than with larger well-oiled machines.  The worst issue I've run into was from a friend of mine who's a magician.  He's a world class performer, and a total pro, who's website is important for his business.  He had a former partner hosting his site on a computer in his home.  The partner moved into a new house and didn't tell my friend that his website was going to go down when he moved.  The whole thing turned into a mess and his site was down for weeks.  Not good.  I've had other weird problems with really small companies.  Don't let a web designer rope you into using a hosting company that you don't know anything about.  Do your due diligence.

Also, 24 hour phone support and short hold times is really important to me.  I want to know that if something goes down I can get ahold of someone and get it resolved.  Chances are, unless you're big time and you're paying a lot of money for hosing, you're website is hosted on a shared server.  In rare cases things can happen like where another database from another site that's hosted on the same server will be attacked, for example, and it will cause your site to go down.  If it's my site I want to know that there are people around to monitor these things and that I can call them if I need to.

There are some technical considerations that in rare cases may come into play, but for 99.9% of musicians I would recommend godaddy.com for domain registration and/or hosting and hostgator.com for hosting.  Both companies have 24/7 tech support and they generally know their stuff.  There are plenty of other decent companies out there, but these are the two that I can recommend with total confidence.

I recommend avoiding networksolutions.com because their prices are ridiculous and they charge for things like domain forwarding ($13/year) that are free with most other companies.  I've experienced hold times of over an hour with aplus.net when I had an urgent problem to deal with where they were at fault.  I had to make a number of calls to them and it took up waaaay too much of my time that I'll never get back.  🙁  And finally, if you come across a company called Domain Registry of America, turn and run in the other direction and don't look back.  They've been a know scammer for years and have been busted for it in the past.  They charge ridiculous prices and they actually try to deceive people into transferring their domain names to them - usually via snail mail.

I'd love to hear if you've had any especially good or bad experiences with registrars and hosting companies, so please post a response if you have.  Thanks!

Hi Scott

I've used GoDaddy for several years for most of my domain registrations, and I recently switched my hosting to Hostgator. I am very happy with both companies, especially Hostgator. Their Tech support pay scale is based on customer response, so the techs have very good incentive to fix whatever problem you may have. They have always done a great job for me so far

What would a jam session with Gordon Lightfoot, Collective Soul, and Damien Rice sound like?

Lol!  I must get a letter from Domain Registry of America once a month.  They abandon the whole copywriting/salesmanship for the "official" looking invoice that is "not an invoice"  Too funny.

Thanks for the post, Scott.

Hey Dean,

It actually loaded very quickly for me.  Are you having trouble with the landing page loading or is it another part of your site?  If so, could you send a link to one of the pages that's loading slowly?

Hi Dean,

I just visited and it loaded in about 4 seconds for me.

I ran your link through a load time analyzer and it's saying that your link takes 15 seconds to load on a T1 connection.  I'm not sure that's reliable or not, but it also gives a nice list of what may be slowing things down.

Check it out for yourself

Hey Dean,

I'm pretty retarded when it comes to analyzing load times. One thing I have seen in th past though is that when I have shared hosting (which you almost certainly do), and I have a lot of plugins and a decent amount of traffic, my load times are slow. I ended up getting a private server to fix it.

Hey Dean,

I took a look at the site and it seems you've got a bunch of unnecessary scripts running and the whole thing is routed in what looks like a pretty convoluted way.

You have it set up as though it's running wordpress - with an incomplete theme at http://deanfields.com/wp-conte.....prodigious.  Instead of running a normal wordpress setup, the index file on your site (the home page) is pulling images and other files and scripts from inside the folder where the wordpress theme would be located.

Any idea why the site would be set up this way instead of just running a normal Wordpress install?  The blog posts aren't being dynamically generated as they would in Wordpress.  Is this a workaround for a hosting setup that doesn't allow you to access a database?  If that's the case than I think you'd be much, much better off by switching hosting to a new company and setting up Wordpress properly.  It will be a bit of a pain in the ass but I think the sooner you do that the better off you'll be.

Awesome.  Thanks John!  I also have a networking group that includes some members with exceptional talent in graphic design, programming, video production, lighting direction and photography amongst other things.  I'm going to see if I can work out some special deals for Insider Circle members.  In the meantime, if anyone here has any specific requests along those lines please let me know.

Ok Scott....I'm asking!  In the near future I need to hire somebody to clean up my new website that I built using wordpress, or maybe just look at what I did and redo the whole damn mess! My header sucks, my MP3 player needs to float through the whole site instead of shutting off when someone clicks on a different page, I need to add a photo page.....if you want to take a look at my site, and give me an estimate, that would be cool! Here's the link to the site: http://www.gregparke.com  If you need more specific info, email me at gregparke@gregparke.com. Thanks!

(See John, I'm taking your advice!)

Hey Greg,

Sounds good.  How about giving me a call some time Monday to go over the details?  I'm available between 11AM and 8PM Pacific at 424-209-7625.  Thanks!

Hey Scott,

Sorry I haven't called yet............I couldn't remember what part of the forum we were in for this thread with your phone number. This morning I discovered that by clicking on your user profile (that small button in the upper left of each  topic entry) I could search for threads that you have responded to, and I found your number again. I'll call you today!

Hey everybody,

I had a nice chat with Scott on the phone yesterday, and we came up with several ideas for my website. Sometime in the near future I am going to have him give my site an overhaul. To those of you who may not be familiar with my story, I recently built my site from scratch with wordpress. I am very unfamiliar with doing this, and as a result I spent way to much time that I could have used better doing something else (like working on my CD!) After spending several days working on it, my site still needs a lot of improvement.

Scott seems to be very knowlegeable about building websites, especially for musicians. I highly recommend that you give him a call before you try to build your own site like I did. His prices seem very reasonable too. If I would have spent the time booking new gigs instead of building my own site, I would have more than paid for his services many times over!

Yeah, I know John....you have mentioned outsourcing many times.....I'm getting it!

Just FYI, there is a search field in the top left hand corner as well. You can search for posts pretty easily there. Just tick various options that might help you narrow it down because a general search will usually provide too many options.

Hey John, I've seen that search field you are talking about before, but it never really "clicked"  (ooooh sorry, I couldn't resist that!) I did click on it just now, and I will definitely be using it in the future. Thanks for the heads up.
