Does anyone have suggestions on an alternative to dreamhost? Their servers crash about once a week lately.
Also, how do I move all my stuff once I switch?
Hi Jason,
There are certainly a million other hosts out there, but if your site is crashing once a week then something else is going on. That is not normal, nor is it a reflection of their service. I recommend them because I have been with them for about 15 years. I have also have accounts with a few other of the big hosts because of sites that I've acquired over the years, and I much prefer Dreamhost. I use uptime monitoring and rarely get crashes. When I do, it tends to be for about 1 minute in the middle of the night. No service is perfect but they have been pretty good by me. When I had a site on Godaddy, for example, my site went down far more often and their support was all outsourced so they could almost never help. Dreamhost does not have phone support, which is a strike against them, but they do have chat support and they have always been helpful.
I'd personally start by contacting them to find out why your site is crashing so often. Something is wrong. It is likely with your site, but it could also be that there is an issue with the server you are on that needs to be reported. I had that happened once, they found the issue and moved me to a new server.
Id start there before going through the hassles of moving. But if you do move, Godaddy, Hostgator, and Bluehost are the big ones in my opinion. But there are literally thousands of them. Just don't go with a small operation. Support is key.
Moving is a total pain. The new service will likely be willing to do it for a free, or you can hire someone to do it for you. It's not something I've ever personally done myself because it's quite technical. I hire people to make the move for me and can make a referral if you need one. B
