John,
I'm wondering what form of payment to accept for my membership site.
I see that you used Clickbank for Insider Circle. I'm wondering if that makes sense for me too.
I see how Clickbank takes care of recurring payments. I see how there is a one time fee to to get the product approved. I see how Clickbank takes care of allowing affiliates to sell your product, I see how Clickbank takes care of paying commisions.
If I went with Paypal, I'd have to pay a monthly fee to have the level of Paypal that accepts recurring payments. That fee is not only higher than Clickbank fees but, there would not be any features to encourage affiliate selling.
So, it seems like Clickbank is both cheaper and more effective than Paypal for recurring charges? Am I missing anything?
Thanks for your thoughts,
Jonathan Wright

Hey Jonathan,
You know, that's a good question. It's something I have thought about a lot myself and so far anyway I have stayed away from it. For some reason I have this gut feeling that tells me NOT to have affiliates for my music enter into teh clickbank system. For a couple of reasons... I want to keep things all about the music and not let my street team (which are usually my most dedicated fans) behind the scenes of the marketing too much. Somehow seeing my music next to weight loss products and get rich quick schemes seems the the wrong way to go. They also charge a $50 set up fee and 9% per transaction. Paypal is much cheaper than that at about 3%. If you wanted to set up an affiliate program now I would personally look at digital access pass and paypal as the way to go. Still, you could still technically do it with Clickbank especially if you only wanted to use them as a payment processor. But again, that 9% really cuts in when you start seeing sales. You also have less control over your sales message process with clickbank. But it's not a huge issue.
One other thing to be aware of with clickbank is that you you can only have one link destination per account. You can add multiple products but the affiliate link will always only go to one page. So if you wanted to have people promote multiple products you might have some issues. There are workarounds, but you need to kind of jimmy rig it.
FYI, it's still a long way off but I will be starting my own affiliate service that only handles music and merch for musicians, just like clickbank. But again, that won't likely happen until Summer or later of next year.
