Feedback on my squeeze page design?

Are you willing to give me feedback on my squeeze page design?  The squeeze page I have been using is not converting very well at all, and I'd really, really like to change that.  Here's my new version, and I'd love to have some feedback before uploading it.  I'm kind of trying to sell people on the body of my work, rather than any one particular work.  I do video (and DVDs) but have also produced a couple of CDs, one of which is really good and the other of which is, well, fine.  I also produce/direct both for the educational market and the general public, and do documentaries, experimental work, and am just completing my first feature-length drama.

(I have another version that doesn't have the quotes, but has photos that graphically show some of the diversity my work offers.)perJohnOsqueeze-copy-smaller.jpg

Hey Eva,

Happy to give feedback. That's exactly what the forum is for :-)

Only issue is that the attachment is very small, about the size of a postage stamp. I can't make it out well enough to comment yet. If you did have a live page somewhere that would be helpful, but in the very least please post a much bigger screen shot.

Whenever I tried uploading a larger image, I got a message saying my image was too large.  I've just sent it to you as an attachment to an e-mail, using this e-mail address:  oszajca@gmail.com

No worries, looks like the file size itself just needed a little compression. I have added it in this post just so others can see it. It actually looks pretty good to me. It coveys a lot and is easy to understand. I think it's worth testing.

With that said, there are a couple areas that could possibly be stronger. Only in the sense that if this doesn't convert, I know what I would try changing...

1. My eyes go to the left hand side of the page first, as most people's do. What I read are the quotes, which don't connect as well if I don't know what they are in regards to. So I might try adding the main copy to the left and the quotes to the right.

2. Your headline is clear and solid, but there is no supporting copy to back it up and explain more of the details. The idea is that a headline is like the thing you'd yell out to a stranger to get their attention, and then once you had it you would explain all the details. Sometimes you can get away with just a headline but my gut tells me that many people will need more explanation of what they are signing up for and why they should hand over their email address.

But over all I think this is a great step in the right direction and even as is, I think you'll see a nice jump in the conversion rate as long as your targeting is right. If you don't, those are a few places you might start tweaking.

You might refer back to my squeeze pages for an example of at least a traditional layout that tends to work. But it's not the only thing that works by any means. Good job.

Ok, now that I´ve given my design some time, I´m going to try your design suggestions, but in the meantime, I have two problems.  One is that my conversion rate is very, very low.

My squeeze page was getting 10-15 visits per day until July, and now it´s dropped off to almost nothing...but even before July, I only got about 1 sign-up every one or two weeks (meaning 1 sign-up for every 140 or so visits).

To increase the traffic, I FINALLY got around to writing another article for EZines, but EZines will not allow me to reference my squeeze page!  So using them for traffic generation might not be such a good idea.  I´ve now linked my new article to my main, content rich web site, but I want to generate traffic for the squeeze page!  (Yes, there is a sign-up form on the home page of my content rich web site, but there´s a lot of other stuff there as well.)

A thought:  up until recently, I was mostly writing articles for a relevant on-line magazine called Somos Primos, and that is probably where the pre-July traffic was coming from.  Since I haven´t written anything for them for a while, that could explain the July drop-off in traffic.  Obviously, I´ll be writing more articles for Somos Primos.

But I´m still left with a) low conversion rate even when the squeeze page is getting traffic, and b) I´m wondering if EZines is worth the effort.

Any thoughts?

Ok, here´s a redesign of the squeeze page.  (Comments & questions above stilll apply.)  I personally think the "Music, dance, drama...." is too much, but I´m asking questions here so give me your opinion.  I also used photos instead of text to give an idea as to what I do.  The part where it has space for first & last names, etc., will actually be inserted using html or some code, but I put them in just so you could see about what it would look like when uploaded.perJohnOsqueeze-July-2013-copy.jpgImage Enlarger

Hey Eve,

Just wondering, is there a reason you haven't tried a template more similar to the example templates I often use? I think that might be a decent control so that you can get a better sense of whether or not the traffic or the page is the problem.

I think your page looks good, but if the last design is not working well then I think there is a good chance that your new page won't work well either.

Your page is MUCH more image oriented than I usually experiment with. It's my sense that too much distraction cuts down the conversion rate. Instead I really infinity more on the copy. I thought your page looked good and was worth giving a spin, but if it's not converting, your problem may lie somewhere in there.

Currently, and just in my opinion, if you put yourself in the shoes of the visitor, they are first confronted with the idea that they can experience cultural diversity through film. Assuming you have found a target audience that is actively interested in cultural diversity then you would theoretically have many of them primed to take the next step. Your next step is to sign up for a newsletter, which honestly doesn't strike me as that exciting. I think you might do better to offer something a tad more substantial, like a short film. If you don't have that you could switch up the ad to put more emphasis on the music.

My gut tells me that you have a lot of elements that are still too loosely held together. I think you are also still very light on the copy. If I was tasked with trying to get your page converting better I would start with my simpler white template and really try to make an enticing offer to a target group of people and keep tweaking until you got that converting well. Then I would try taking the winning elements and laying them out in the design you have to see if that helped or hurt. It's a fairly fragile process and sometimes it can take quite a lot of tweaking until things are working well.

The next IC training, which I am going to release any day is all about taking a squeeze page that isn't converting and getting it to convert, so hopefully that will help you.

As for Ezine Articles, they will allow you to link to a squeeze page. It's more likely that they just had an issue with the language you used in the link. If you paste the language they used in the notice I can better advise you. That said, you may do better to try and offer your services as a gust blogger to other sites than to focus on EZA, especially if you've had success with that in the past.

My squeeze page DOES offer a short film, so obviously I'm not communicating.  On the squeeze page, I say "Sign up here for our newsletter.   Each month, you'll get new music and a trailer from one of her productions."  And I say "Subscribe to this list to receive music and a video trailer."  Since this doesn't even communicate to YOU that I'm offering a short film, what have I done wrong?

OR are you suggesting I imbed a video clip onto my squeeze page?

Also, where is your simpler, white template?  The only template I have is the one with the flaming guitar (which has a second version in which the flaming guitar is replaced by a plain, dark red header).  Are you suggesting I go back to that one, or is there a template I'm missing?  Since you don't use that template for your own squeeze page, I tried to allow myself to be inspired by your own squeeze page plus one other that an MMM person used, and turn it to something relevant to me.

I'd gone kind of heavy on the visuals since video/film are visual mediums, with the thought that the visuals gave a better idea as to what I do than would a lot of text.  I haven't even put this squeeze page up, so don't yet know if it'll do any better than the earlier version.

I can't find the e-mail from EZines requiring me to change my link.  It said I needed to link to a page with more content, so I changed the link from my squeeze page to my main web site.  Here, below, is the paragraph that they objected to;  and they specifically objected to the link (note that my article is about flamenco):

You say trailer, not short film. A trailer is just a commercial to my mind. Not something i would sign up for. It also sort of takes the emphasis off of the music somehow. I think because neither is really being sold. A newsletter is also something i am not generally interested in unless it offers some specific value, usually problem solution based and not something that it's easy for artists to do.

To my mind you wnat to come up with a headline more along the lines of "enter your name and email address and I'll send you the download link to the short film which ____ magazine called "A shocking expose into the struggles of ______", absolutely FREE!" As apposed to, subscribe to our newsletter and I'll send you a trailer and some music. If you catch my meaning.

No, I wouldn't.

I haven't offered that template publically but plan to do so. However it can be easily created by simply editing the one I did offer and changing the colors of the background images and text. I am currently planning on offering the template for next month's training video.

I'd gone kind of heavy on the visuals since video/film are visual mediums, with the thought that the visuals gave a better idea as to what I do than would a lot of text.  I haven't even put this squeeze page up, so don't yet know if it'll do any better than the earlier version.

I understand the impulse but less is usually more with a squeeze page. But you'll never know until you test. Occasionally busier squeeze pages do really well.

Unless something has changed very recently then they will allow links to squeeze pages. I have hundreds of them. It may be a combo of the call to action and the content on the squeeze page. You might try stating more of a benefit in the call to action and lining that up with the offer on teh squeeze page. IE "To watch her latest documentary go to: Link" or something along those lines. But make sure the copy matches on teh squeeze page itself.

One way or another, thanks for your continued help.  I'll keep working on it.                  Eve

My pleasure :-)
