How to add value to a membership site and what's out there to build it

I would love to hear any ideas on this. Here's some of mine...

Every musician has his or her rehearsals which could be video taped and then edited how ever you wish to add entertainment and a intimacy between them and their fans.

I really like John's idea for a membership site because you can only sell so many albums at $10 a pop, but take that same fan and get $10 from them every month if you can. They want to support you if they love you enough and they want more from you like John said.

In that case there's a free plugin I got started with called s2member, it also can become a premium like Wishlist. I really like s2member but I don't like using paypal as my shopping cart. Of course 1shopping cart is the business standard but it's like $50 a month.  So I'm examining fusionsoft and looking at other possibilities. So if I like it and have to cough up Wishlist's one time fee of $97 to in order use it as my member's shopping cart then so be it.

Has anyone traveled this terrain yet? Please save me some time researching if you can. Thanks!

P.S. Hey John, which plug in do you use for this awesome membership site? I like the smileysYell

Hey Michael,

You might check out ZenCart.com. I believe they are free, but I haven't used them. I hate Paypal as a company but I wouldn't be too afraid of them. People are pretty used to Paypal and I dont think they hurt business. But i do think they make upsells a little sloppier. Infusionsoft is awesome, but about $300 a month. I think 1shoppingcart is decent but I'd wait until sales justified the expense.

I use Wishlist for this site and Simple Press For the forum. Both wordpress plugins.

Hi Michael,

I agree that memberships can be an untapped opportunity for bands to generate regular income. I know you're asking about what plugings/shopping carts to use but I thought I'd also share my experience with building a membership site.

It can be an enormous time suck. It can get complicated really fast and it's easy to get lost in the details of things like multiple membership levels, drip content and how the membership area interacts with Wordpress or your autorepsonder.

So before you commit to building one I'd recommend that you first are able to prove to yourself that there is interest. Will your audience want to pay $10/month to view edits of your rehearsals? Test this for free and save yourself a lot of time and effort before you build a membership site.

Secondly - when you build it out - take baby steps. Don't try to build the 'ultimate membership area' right away. Keep it simple and build it out as you become more familiar with the tech and are seeing a demand for your content.

I would start out with Paypal and S2 member will be more then adequate to get you started.

The cheapest form of a membership area is a simple password protected area on Wordpress; you can put the email list behind a payment button and only those on the list get access to the link and the password - this is probably about as cheap and easy as it gets.

I know you didn't ask about this stuff, but hopefully what I shared can help you get up and running quickly. Wishlist member is the industry standard from what I've seen and it seems to work well for John here in the Insider Circle! Just justify the demand before you go to too much trouble and expense.

Good luck!
