How to automate Prospects to Customer List? Best Online Stores?

Hi guys!

I am about to revamp my website and set up an online store (any recommendations of platforms you use?).  I am trying to figure out how to automate prospects to customers.  ie.  when someone on my email list buys a cd, I can move them to a different list so that I can segment and send my offers.  Do you have to ask for their email address AGAIN on a separate webform during the purchasing process and then set up the automation rule in aweber, or, is there a way to move them to a customer list seamlessly without requiring them to opt in and then confirm again?  I want to be able to segment my list into buyers and non-buyers so I can make offers to get non-buyers off the fence and not offend people who have already bought with a better offer!

Thanks so much for any advice.

PS.  I see the "Email Parser" program on AWeber and see that I can use that, however it requires that the person confirms their email separately.  So, if anyone loses/somehow misses the confirmation email (or, they are already subscribed to my email list, so they don't think they need to reconfirm), they will not be moved to the new list AND they will be deleted from the old list, so I lose them completely.

Hi Kat,

This seems to keep getting trickier for people.

I don't use Aweber, I'm a Getresponse user.  They used to have a convoluted way of doing this using a 1X1 pixel, but then they switched to API integration with some shopping carts.

To give you some insight, they created an API interface with paypal, that takes the contact information from checkout and then adds them to a new list seamlessly inside of the autoresponder.  From there, the autoresponder's automation rules will take over.  For instance if your rule is "if on list >> remove from other list" you customer will be removed from the prospecting list to the customer list and receive a whole new set of follow-up messages.

I may be wrong about this, but I think John actually asks people to fill a form on the thank you page after the purchase.

It seems like a pain, but it's the safest way to not have your paying customers fall into oblivion after they have just paid you. (because they are the ones who will likely pay you again at some point).

Hopefully John has some insight on this for you with regard to Aweber.

HI Steve,

Thanks so much for your reply. Yes, Aweber told me I'd have to have a programmer do the API...they said there is no way they can automate it.  Grrrrr!

Thank you!

Hi Kat,

I just always make the email confirmation part of the purchase process. You don't have to have them opt-in if you don't want to. You can just turn it off and have people enter their email address somewhere on thank you page after ordering. There isn't the same risk of people entering fake email addresses like their is with cold traffic. Then you can use aweber's parser to remove them from the old list (or at least I think you can with a no-opt in subscriber). But in all honestly I just have people confirm. It's a bit of a pain for the customer but they have already paid so it's not like you will lose a customer, and at the end of the day it's less irritating than getting promo emails for something they already bought.

Hi guys!

Ok, I am getting all sorts of turned around at the moment.

My goal: Person purchases an LTO, then is taken to a page for an OTO and then are taken to a page where they have to enter their email address to recieve their purchase (therefore, I have "automated" my customers vs. prospects list AND can have an autoresponder set up to send them the download links (without having to manually send all the links and without having to manually change people from prospects to customers).  What I am trying to do right now feels overly complicated, and what makes it slightly more confusing is that there are TWO different LTO's who should be sent TWO different autoresponders with different download links.

Here's what I've got going:
Customer clicks on paypal button to buy EP ---->purchase EP through paypal-----> after purchase are directed to a "landing" page, which is my OTO (using page expiration bot)------>customer purchases OTO and then are redirected to a second "Landing page" which will have a webform which they will fill out and then an autoresponder will send them their 1st email from the new "customer" list that will have the download links.

The issue with this plan is, if they don't purchase the OTO....I suppose I could have on that page: Click here to continue your order?  And then that could send them to the "Landing page" which will have a webform which they will fill out and then an autoresponder will send them their 1st email from the new "customer" list that will have the download links.

The second issue is that the two LTO's have different download bonuses, but if they are coming from the OTO page, there is only one option to link.

Is there a simpler way to do this?

Thank you guys so much!!

Kat

Short answer, no. You need to create unique pages for each possible path. For example with VMP we have 2 upsells on top of the VMP product itself. That means that someone could order product A all by itself, product A and B but not C, product A and C, but not B, or product A, B, and C. We have paths for each combination, four different thank you pages, and four different lists so we can email the appropriate download links. There is no real way around it without some pretty sophisticated programing. At least none that I've ever heard of. With that said, once it comes into focus it's not really that confusing either.

OK, thanks John. Did you do that all through paypal buttons?

If they buy ANY product, the paypal button which they click will always be redirecting them to the OTO page. Once at the OTO page, I'm not sure how to send them to Product A or Product B landing page that will subscribe them to different lists, since they will always be coming from the OTO page.

Wait...I think I just figured it out....I need 2 OTO pages that will send to those different Product A or B lists?

Ok, I figured that out!  Thank you!!

Now, I can't figure out how to get people automatically redirected to the OTO.  I've set it up within the paypal button for it to go to the OTO page once the "purchase is complete", however when the purchase is complete, it shows a paypal receipt and the only way to get to the OTO is if I click on "Return to info@katparsons.com"....

I use 1shoppingcart to do this and it's been a while since I have set up a paypal button but I know that they have an option that redirects people. Not sure if this is fro business accounts only or not. You might just try calling paypal. I see this a lot when ordering through paypal. The message says something like, "you will be redirected to the merchant's site, click here if you are not redirected within 10 seconds".

It might be more work than you want to do right now, but you could always get something like Pay Flow Pro (from paypal) and 1shoppingcart and just cancel after a month. That way you could have everything done really seamlessly. But Paypal will definitely work. 1s might be a bit expensive for the long run depending on your sales volume after the launch.

ok, cool.  so 1shoppingcart appears to be $39/month.  here's what i came up with in case this helps anyone else!

Paypal allows you to redirect on a regular personal/premium account.  Here's how:

Go to My Account

Profile

My selling tools

Website Preferences - Bring customers back to my website after the pay with Paypal....turn this on.

This should work perfectly if you only have 1 landing page.

If you have more, the only free option through paypal is to upgrade to a Business Account and then Name your business "Click on this link to get your purchase!" so that instead of saying: "Return to info@katparsons.com", it will say:

"Return to Click on this link to get your purchase!" or whatever you put there....it's not perfect, but hopefully will work!  eek!

Wow, thanks for posting this Kat! This is one thing I haven't set up on my website yet, but now I l know how. You just saved me a bunch of time!

I followed your directions once I signed in to my PayPal account, and they have all kinds of things that you can set up for a website. I have a merchant account, so I don't know if all those options are available on a regular account or not. Definitely worth getting a merchant account if that is the case

What would a jam session with Gordon Lightfoot, Collective Soul, and Damien Rice sound like?

Check out Greg Parke and you’ll have a pretty good idea!

Greg,

I'm so pleased to be of help to anyone...everyone has been so helpful to me!  I actually figured out how to have it redirect to different pages with each separate button when i signed up for the business account HOWEVER this only works when people purchase THROUGH paypal....if they purchase through a credit card (on paypal's website) it does not redirect them.  HOWEVER, I am going to call in the morning to see if Merchant Services can help me with an API so it redirects even if they pay with credit card.

I hope this helps Greg!  Feel free to reach out if I can help!

Thanks!

Kat

PS.  Renaming your business as "Click to download..." didn't really work because the name appears on so many pages....

Ok, one more piece of info!  If people pay by credit card (vs. signing into their paypal), they will not be automatically redirected to your landing page.  However, you can go to:

Merchant Services

My Saved Buttons

Step 3

The last box in step 3...advanced something

Check that box and write cbt= and whatever you want it to say and it makes a very clear button for people to push. (Example cbt=Click here to complete purchase and receive downloads.)

Yikes! I was going to try to figure this out tonight. My head is spinning, and I think I'm going to bed instead. I'm serious! LOL!

Ok...note to self...bookmark this page...come back with a better attitude, lots of time, and perhaps a margarita. Is the margarita going to make this harder? Maybe. But it might make it tolerable.

Yes, Margaritas have been known to help. I think Paypal's FAQs should include the question, which alcohol pairs with the tech process best? I'm sure it comes up a lot.
