Hello guys, I've been setting up an e-commerce on my wife's website. But, when the plugin asks for a PayPal API, I complete the fields with my info but the Checkout step always fail, with an unknown error. When I search over PayPal site I've seen the info that Express Checkout is only for business accounts, and I don't have a company. Is there any other way to setup this or I'll get stucked to sell music over sites like CD-baby and iTunes Store?
Hi Sergio,
Don't be too worried about setting up a business account with PayPal. If you are setting up for e-commerce on a website, then you have a business, and meet the criteria to have a PayPal business account. They are very easy to set up, and don't cost anything. I don't recall the exact procedure but if you log into to PayPal, the instructions are pretty easy to locate. If I remember right, it took me about 5 minutes to set mine up. They don't request any info about business licenses, insurance, storefront location etc. A kid mowing lawns could set up a business account if he wanted to!
What would a jam session with Gordon Lightfoot, Collective Soul, and Damien Rice sound like?

Greg, unfortunately when I try to create a new business account, they ask me for those info. I think that may be happening due to Brazilian Law. So, I cannot open a business account unless I'm a real company or store. Sad, very sad.
Bummer!
I seem to recall that there are a couple of types of business accounts. Maybe the kind I have is meant for simple stuff like selling items from a website, and not so restrictive? It seems like there should be some way to do it!
On the flip side, in my experience, selling CD's through CD Baby has been a pretty good and easy process. I haven't sold a ton of CD's through them, because I really haven't driven the traffic there, but they have been very helpfull and honest company to deal with. I happen to live about two hours away from them, so I have been to their wharehouse and office building to check them out. Pretty cool operation. You would not believe how many CD's they have in their wharehouse!

My experience was the same as Greg. It was very easy to set up a business account. If I remember right they ask for the name of the business but I didn't think they required a corporate tax ID. It's really easy to do a DBA (doing business as) and just add the name of the business and then use your personal tax ID. Truthfully, it's not like anyone is ever going to ask you for proof that you filed a DBA anyway. I personally just typed in the name of my business and that was the end of it. No problems.
But as you touched on, it may have something to do with the fact that you are in another country. I would just call them. They would be able to give you the scoop.
Worst case scenario, you should be able to sign up with Pay Flow Pro. It's about $30/month and is a lot more advanced then traditional paypal. Much better for ecommerce.

Hi Sergio - it says in this article, see link, that Premier accounts work with Express Checkout. I have a Premier account, because I don't have a registered business name. Look under the heading Express Checkout Prerequisites.

(actually I originally set up a business account really easily by just using my own name - they didn't question it, and I sold a few things using a Paypal button. I have since changed it to Premier.)
