Hey John,
My fb comments just aren't appearing. They're in the comment box within the plugin, but they're not appearing on my site. Can't even leave a comment anymore actually. It's just broken
So before I threw in the towel on fb comments, i decided to do a little research...
I found out that maybe my "SDK JavaScript" doesn't match the SDK that Facebook now provides? (Or it's out of date or something - not really sure what any of this means)
But I found out that maybe I go here and follow the instructions:
https://developers.facebook.co.....omments/
So I did that: I entered a URL of a page that uses fb comments, generated the new javascript code they provide (as instructed on that page), but now I'm totally lost on what to do with that javascript code
I think I have to put it on my site. And place it after the body tags or something? (which I don't even know where that is, but I think I have to go to Appearances >> Editor >> and then edit the theme to do that?? That sounds nerve-racking lol
I want to try it, but I feel kinda nervous to use the editor because maybe I might break the theme.
-Think I should just go for it?
-Do I just make a backup of my site first, in case I do break it?
Thanks John!
Hi Brian,
Steve here. I'm sure John will jump in on this at some point too, but it does sound to me like you'd need to edit the parent theme files to do this, which obviously we don't recommend for the very concerns that you have about doing so.
To directly address that concern, yes, back up your site before making any such edits.
So I visited the article you linked to and I wonder if you can simply paste the first snippet of code into the "Insert Headers and Footers" plugin. However adding the second snippet is where I'm a bit confused. I do get the sense that it would need to be added to several different page templates (the ones that include regular Wordpress comments), right above or near the Wordpress comment coding in the templates.
That said, I can't for the life of me imagine that it would even need to be this difficult. Surely there's something we're overlooking here.
Hey Steve,
thanks so much for helping out! I posted that JavaScript into the headers and footers plugin as you suggested.
it basically just made the fb comments appear at the bottom of the page like normal.
Then I posted that second bit of code directly on the page as they suggested. That made the fb comments appear a second time on the page.
weird stuff.
I’m hoping I can get Scott James to just login and fix my Facebook comments problem for good. That is if he does this kind of thing.
What is a link to his services?
Only reason I’m askin about him, is that I don’t really wanna give my login info to someone random on fiverr.
But however this turns out, thanks for your help y’all, much appreciated!

Hey Brian,
Most of that is over my head and I turn to developers for that sort of stuff.
As far as I know Scott is not currently doing freelance work.
I do have someone else but he is a bit more expensive. He charges $200/hour though you may be able to negotiate. But he's very competent.
That said, I know I have added FB comments to the theme without issue in the past.
Have you tried just using a different FB comment plugin?

Hey John,
I hear you man, me too.
I tried a plugin called Fancy Facebook Comments. They even have a feature called "Recover lost comments after moving to 'https' "
I was hopeful about that but no luck.
I also tried the plugin Heateor Social Comments - it integrates WP, FB and Disqus comments - whatever the heck those are.
WP comments worked. I disabled Disqus comments. And FB comments had the same result as the other FB plugins - I type in a comment and when I press post, it stays "grey" if that makes any sense. It never turns to the black color of a comment that's been posted. And when I refresh the page, the comment is erased. Also my old comments aren't showing.
I think I'm ready to go ahead and contact your guy.
I appreciate you encouraging me on the last coaching call to not get rid of FB comments. I think it's worth it to fix this problem because FB comments are valuable in promoting engagement. Which is important in the long term.
Thank you John!

Hi Brian,
Steve here. I just wanted to let you know that John is away for the day, but he'll get back to you tomorrow.
Hey Brian,
The main reason I removed FB comments from the MMM course is precisely because of the kind of frustration you're experiencing. All things advanced FB are unnecessarily confusing and always changing.
I spoke to my guy and he is willing to give all of my MMM referrals a break. His rate is $200/hr (that is what I actually pay), but he is willing to do small jobs for $40 an hour to anyone who mentions MMM. But the job minimum is one hour. So even if it takes hi 5 minutes (which it might), you pay $40. But that's a good deal from my perspective.
I don't want to post his email in the forum, but I'll send you an email with his contact info now.

Hi John,
I totally get it. Part of me wanted to ditch FB comments and move on. But long term, I think that might be a mistake. Esp. if I can find someone to help when FB makes the occasional change that's way over my head.
So that's very awesome that you spoke with Matt and negotiated that MMM student break. I agree, it is def. a good deal, and it is def. appreciated! Thank you John! I just got your email, replying now.
Awesome. How'd it go with Matt?

It’s still going. Our last communication was Saturday night. I think he’a been working on it since. I will update you as soon as I hear back. Thanks again John!
Ok, cool. I'm surprised it's taken that long. Definitely keep me posted. Cheers.

Hey John,
It's no sweat at all, he's cool to work with. In fact he just got back to me today. And actually I was hoping you could tell me how to do something he asked me to do - He asked me:
"It looks like the comments have links to what they are commenting on and I would like to look at those to see if I can piece together what is up. Can you give me app permissions on Facebook? Go ahead and add me: (his email address)"
How do I give him app permissions on FB? Cheers!
Hey Brian,
I don't actually understand that sentence. I would need further clarification.

By that I mean, I don't understand what he means by "It looks like the comments have links to what they are commenting on". I'm not 100% sure on the app permissions either. I'd need to look into it but I'm walking out the door for a few days. You may find that it's just easier to let him login to your FB account.

Worrdd. I just gave him my FB login info. Good call.
Yeah I'm not sure what Matt meant by that sentence either. But it feels like he's on the right track.
Thanks John, hope you have a great weekend!
Sounds good. Any progress since?

Oh wow. That's bizarre. I haven't seen him not be able to figure anything out.
