Steve here.  Yes, this is a common issue, due to iPhones, iPads and some other mobile devices not being able to handle the zipped folder.  John recommends doing as you have done and sending the person the unzipped mp3s, as well as the zipped folder.

Here's the way he has previously recommended altering your automated follow-up email, so that you'll rarely have to deal with the issue manually:

Hey (NAME),

 

Thanks so much for taking the time to listen to my latest single.

 

You can download the track here:

http://link.com

 

Included in the download folder you will find (describe what they get).

Simply unzip the folder and, then drag and drop the files into your iTunes or any other appropriate folder.

 

If you are accessing this page via a mobile device, just use the download app of your choice to save the track to your phone or tablet.
