I just finished putting together my squeeze page and auto-responder and I'd love it if you guys could take a look and let me know if you see anything I should consider doing differently: http://www.thelovelysavages.info
(My page is a modified version of John's template that came with MMM 2.0)
Here are I couple of ideas I'm toying with adding. My offer is a 3 song EP, so I thought of adding a sample audio clip of one of the tunes close to the top, or putting together a goofy video that has some audio snips in it.
Do you guys feel that adding additional media to the squeeze page helps? Or does it turn in to a distraction from the goal?

The short answer is that you don't know what effect it will have until you test it.
Ideally though… the magic words here are direct response. It's not so much the samples that will get the opt-in, it's the offer.
If you can make the offer enticing enough for the visitor to fill out the form, you are doing well.
A good formula to follow is:
1. Here's WHO we are
2. Here's WHAT we have for you
3. Here's WHY you want/ need it
4. Here's HOW you can get it.
One approach you can test is to have an exact copy of your current squeeze page, but instead of the written bullet-point text, you can have a video with you (and your bandmates) reading the text in a casual manner and then say, "Hey all you have to do to get our free track is fill out the form over here and click this button (actually point to the button).
I've tried this approach and in my case, the page with the video always out performs the text. Personally, I would make them sign up before I gave away any samples. I'm sure you feel your stuff is worth that much… at least. 🙂

P.S. BTW, the page looks great. Once you start a testing process, you'll eventually make changes that improve you opt-in rate.
Thanks for the tips! I like the break down of the formula. I'm excited to test things and find out what works. But first... gotta generate some friggin traffic!
I agree, testing is the only way to know.
As a general rule, giving them a sample is only going to kill the curiosity factor for some. But that is not always the case.
Video is another tricky one. I have seen it dramatically improve conversions as well as hurt them. It depends how charismatic you come across in the video. Most people report that it helps.
I would start with what you have, test it, wait until you get at least 100 - 200 unique hits and then try changing things up, one element at a time.
A photo might also help, but same goes... you never know until you test.

It's actually interesting that you said that.... when someone is offering something you really want, you can't help but give up the contact info.
That's the true power behind the direct response marketing methods we talk about in here. 🙂
They will work just as well for you when you use them on other people.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't be two scared to give away your email address. It's become much more effective to use ethical email management systems then to simply spam people. Almost every company out there asking for email addresses provides a unsubscribe link. If you're really worried about it just set up a second gmail account and forward it to your inbox.If it got out of control you could just detach the gmail account.
I'd just hate to see you missing out on all the great tools out there because you were concerned about spam. I don't see it as much of an issue. I have given out my address to hundreds, if not thousands, of marketers and have had no issue controling my inbox.
Funny enough, the worst offenders are musicians who still don't understand the value of an autoresponder and so they scrape email addresses from industry sites like mine and spam me all day long. But thanks to gmail filters which allow you to permenantly block an email address, that's not really a problem either.

I've actually had people subscribe to my auto responder and then assume it's okay to add my reply email address to their mailing list. I consider that to be spam. I don't mind if it's one of my subscribers, until they start sending out self-serving crap.
That's definitely Spam. It's also illegal. I really don't get why anyone bothers spamming. It's so ineffective.
