This is an easy question about something I should already know.
But while we're here:
how do I enable wordpress comments on the default page template?
I vaguely remember disabling them last week, but now I don't know how I did that or how to get it back.

There are two relevant places to check...
First, you want to make sure you have comments turned on under Discussions, in settings.
But on the actual page editor you will see an option for comments with a radial that needs to be ticked if you want to turn comments on.
If you don't see that option, go up to the top of the page and click the drop down that says "screen options". And then tick "comments" so it will appear.
