If you're anything like me, it probably seems like everytime some piece of technology upgrades, or you have to implement something that seems to come really easily to others, you find yourself met with resistance at every turn.
Such is the case this week for me when I was setting up my first Google Content Experiment. This is the new a/b split test feature that was formerly known as Google Website Optimizer, but is now part of the Google Analytics suite. I have been dreading this update, to be honest.
Going throught the set-up process, it actually seemed to be a bit easier that Website optimizer because you only have to set up code on your control page, while you just have to tell google which page is the test and which is the conversion.
So far so good, right?
Well during the process, I was asked to set up a 'goal', which is a feature I've never bothered to use previously for analytics, but I wanted to do this right the first time, so I set one up.
Still so far so good.
A few days ago I started running traffic to my experiment and I was thrilled to start seeing opt ins right off the bat, only to find the next day that my Google Content Experiment was reporting no visitors and no conversions. (wtf?)
What the hell happened? I'm really missing Website optimizer right now and it seems no one from google has bothered to chime in on the numerous reports of epic failure that closely resemble mine.
Anyone out there have any words of wisdom on content experiments? I've gone through it a couple of times and there's not a doubt that I've set this thing up properly. Just can't figure out how google can tell me it's set up properly but function like it's not, all at the same time 🙂

I don't personally use Google for much more than analytics on a handful of sites. So I'm not really sure here. But if no subs are coming in, are you thinking its the optimizer or just something to do with the traffic?
I personally use the ad tracking that comes with 1shoppingcart. But 1shoppingcart is a bit expensive for most. What are you trying to do exactly? Just figure out which squeeze page is converting best?

Just to be clear, subs are coming in. The problem is that google is not counting the experiment stats and is reporting that there have been no visitors or subs, even though the set-up checks out to valid.
It's almost as if I never set up the experiment 🙂

I'm just trying to track my squeeze page conversions. I switched something around with my "goal", but still no joy.
I'm just going to have to track it by the webform apparently. 🙂
I've been playing around with analytics and goals for the past few months with a whole slew of clients. I haven't worked with content experiments yet though, so I'm not sure if I can help you out or not - especially if Google's indicating that everything is setup correctly but it's not registering for some reason...
So what you're saying is you set up an experiment to track conversions, and you know that you're getting conversions but Google's content experiment isn't showing that you've made conversions?
I'm due to set up some experiments soon, so if I come up with any answers I'll be sure to share them back here.

The hidden ingredient to the new content experiments is that it takes a minimum of 2 weeks for google to actually give you a report on your goal conversion. So if you're not sure if it's set up right. Wait 2 weeks and then try again.
