Hi,

Dreamhost is asking that I update the php of my domain. Last time I did this, when I logged back in and attempted to edit pages, the new format was unreadable (only when editing - I could still visit the various urls). So we reverted back to an older version. (I did MMM in 2015 so have an older version of your wordpress template). Dreamhost is asking to update the php again... I expect I will have the same problem regarding editing. Incidentally, I cannot currently connect the domain through Filezilla, and am concerned it may be related.

Any insights on how to deal with this issue? Has it come up for others with the old templates? And is the Filezilla issue related?

Cheers,

Rachel

An additional note...

Dreamhost wants to update to PHP 7.2. It says I can revert back to a previous php version for a few weeks if the site no longer works as expected (which happened last time), which will give me time to make sure the site's code is up-to-date and compatible with PHP 7.2

I guess I'm asking whether you have any insight and experience of this, and if the older version of the MMM template will be compatible with 7.2?

Hi Rachel,

Steve here.  If you are having difficulty connecting to your site through Filezilla, it may be due to havinf the wrong login info, or it could have to do with the connection method that you have setup on Filezilla for this particular site.

The best thing to do would be to login to Dreamhost and go the FTP users section to make sure you have the right login info.  Then if you still can't connect, contact Dreamhost support to see what they suggest for selecting the connection method for that site/server.

We can't say for sure whether a updating your Php version will effect the theme template from MMM 3.0 because that theme was created back in 2013 or so.

Our best suggestion is to do a site backup before updating Php.  You can do that with a site backup plugin.  Just search the Wordpress plugin directory for one that seems to have a good user rating, then run a back up on your site.  Then do the Php update.

Like the host says, you can always revert back if needed.

This is a signature file.  You can edit your own by clicking "profile" and selecting "Edit Signature".  You can make it an image, or just plain text.  You can also link it to wherever you like.  Perhaps your Squeeze Page?

Hi Rachel,

Like Steve mentioned, the MMM 3 version is pretty old, so it's not something we can offer support for any longer. That said, I have not heard of any other reports of the theme not working because of the PHP version and I would personally suspect plugins more than I would the theme. If the update breaks something, try turning off all plugins and seeing if it persists.

But it is also reasonable to use an older version of PHP. It's not ideal, and you should eventually upgrade to a new theme such as the MMM 4 theme. But you don't absolutely need to.

You could also hire a coder to address the issue, but I would suss out the potential of a plugin conflict, or just purchase a new theme before I would do that. The MMM 3 theme is quite limited compared to what is available now, 7 years later.

Hi John,

I sent you an email yesterday as well. But yes, I think updated to MMM 4.0 is probably the best thing to do anyway, given the flexibility of the new template etc.

It was my husband (tech guru) who looked into it... I think updating the plugins was the first thing he did. But I will check with him. We have reversed the php so the site is currently still working, but my impression from Dreamhost is that they will forcing the update.

IN any case, if you could send me a link for purchasing the new template, that would be great!

Cheers,

Rachel

Hi Rachel,

The MMM4 theme and all the tutorials are part of MMM4, which you can find here: https://www.musicmarketingmani......com/mmm4/

Let me know if you have any questions.

Cheers.

Thanks John!

More for your information than anything in case it comes up for other previous graduates of the older course, my husband suggested I let you know what he tried. Unfortunately Dreamhost is forcing the update this time so we can't continue with an older php. Steve (husband) says he didn't delete the plugins per se, but he did update them all and check they were compatible with php 7.2. He updated the php successfully using other Wordpress templates, but was unable to do it with the MMM 3.0 template. Just FYI.

I've now registered for MMM 4.0, which I think is the better outcome anyway!

Cheers,

Rachel

Ok, thanks for the info. I have not had the same problem with any of my older test installs that are still up on dreamhost, so it's hard not to suspect something else. But I could definitely be wrong. It may just be that they are rolling things out slowly. I'll look into it. I do think you'll do much better with the new theme regardless. Thanks for picking it up!
