Hello John,

I created a basic 5-page website. I would much appreciate your opinion on the look and feel of it and if it aligns with the brand/music and USP. All other comments welcome!

I have invested in MM4 (Music Ads, Copywriting & Record Release) and trying to execute parts as needed. I have to sign off on the recordings first. But near completed a ten-song "album" (need to re-do some vocals then I'm done).

I picked a single (might not be the best choice?) and made a video to practice (please have a quick look at the media page).

Nothing has been released or finalized. I want to make sure it's all properly aligned before I open things up more. I'm in the very early stages.

I might be doing this backward but it helps me narrow focus the brand and USP before I confirm the squeeze page. I had followed your instructions and Aweber setup and it worked great, just took it down just for now.

And lastly who does this music remind you of?

Not sure if my approach is advisable in this situation. But anyways...

Ricky Sparks and the Detonators

Remember me? If you do then at least the name is memorable Wink

Thanks, John for helping.

Hi Ricky,

While the site looks cool, I don't see any of the prescribed pages or elements that I teach about in MMM, so I'm not sure how to critique it. It also loaded a bit slowly for me. I ran a speed test on it and got about 6 seconds, which isn't horrendous, but is too slow. It also got a bad rating on a number of different elements.

What kind of feedback were you looking for here?

As I mentioned, I took down the squeeze page for now until I get the "brand" better dialed in. I'm also just finishing the music before I continue with setting up the marketing. It's early stages.

This is just the start of the main website. It's not the landing page 🙂

There is a problem with a plugin I think. I'm trying to isolate it. I'm aware the site is slow to load I'm working on it. I also may have to pay for more server memory and CPU it's quite low (cheap package). It should be quick once it loads. I'll fix that. Besides the site is not being promoted until I get everything in place properly.

"It also got a bad rating on a number of different elements." I'm not sure what that means.

I just wanted you to look at the "brand" and if it aligns with what I say on the home page, the music, video, and overall cohesiveness. If it does then I would move to setup the landing page. Which I built previously and it did have all the elements.

Thanks,

Ricky

Ok, cool. I think your branding is pretty cool. Lighter sites typically do better than dark sites. But dark can work, especially if it fits your USP. I think your branding totally matches what I think your music is all about. But I'd be curious to hear your USP?

In a different thread I mentioned that your stuff reminded me of East coast 70s punk bands, like the Dead Boys and Johnny Thunders, etc.

You may or may not agree with that.

But if you do, then the only thing I would say is that sentences like "For Fist Pumping Choruses and Arena Anthem Hooks..." make me think more of 80s rock bands like Bon Jovi than they do Punk. I know that a sentence like that is true of both genres, but I think 80s rock is very tied to that idea of Arenas and fists in the air, and it may not be 100% as clear as could be. But I'm just splitting hairs there. It is certainly good enough to get rolling. I would just be sure to pick a lane between anthem rock and punk, and stay firmly in that lane.

Too funny, I just answered your other post. You mentioned Dead Boys and Thunders. And people think I'm more Rock (not RockNRoll). But I don't fully disagree with you.

It's a struggle because I'm on the line. I could go either way Rock or Punk crowd. I probably do need to pick and if you think to lean on the punk side then that might tip it for me. I think I might be a bit on the Rock side and I wonder if the punk guys would embrace it as much. This is my problem...

I also agree Fist Pumping and Arena Anthem are more like 80's terms, that was my heyday. I guess in my head it's also part who I am as well as  Punk (but lighter punk can't stand hardcore).

USP? I'm thinking it might be along the lines of "a contemporary punky-glam-rock equivalent of a Comic Book adaptation of real life." As the main logo and amp resonate that. And some of the lyrics.

Not sure if you saw the video or bio page and I wonder if they are also a good place to start?

Thanks for your time!

Ricky

Hi Ricky,

I think you might be right to be careful with the word punk. It's just that the word "rock" might make people think 80s rock, and your stuff has a more 70s vibe. If you stay focused on the more Thunders side of things, you'll likely be fine. He may not be "punk" but he sounds much more like punk bands like the Dead Boys than he does rock bands like Motley Crue. I think it's an important distinction. And while the hardcore guys might pick your claims apart, most will not. They will just recognize it as being in line with the general vibe of that era and enjoy the music.

That's my two cents anyway.

I did take a peak at the video. What I saw looked good. I didn't have a chance to read the bio.

In terms of where to start, I would stick with what I teach in MMM and drive traffic to a squeeze page in exchange for free music.

Ha we keep answering each other in different posts. Sorry to take up so much of your time much appreciated.

Got it (ignore my other post over there 🙂 Re USP

I might have to think about it more.

Although I also like your idea, "He may not be “punk” but he sounds much more like punk bands like the Dead Boys than he does rock bands like Motley Crue."

Or something that makes that kind of comparison and articulates it the same way. But I do want a little Glam in there as well. OMG... How do you do this?

I'll fire up that squeeze page again.

It's not as tough as it seems. Just describe all of those experiences you strive to create for the listener. And that's it. Worry less about what others are called, if you know what it is that you do.

Just describe the experience your music creates. IE, loud guitars, cigarettes, eye liner, east coast punk-rock bars, class of 76, and so forth. Now just combine all or most of those things into a sentence and say that your music delivers them.
