OK, I'm ready to make the switch from my high priced webhosting to something different. I am looking at moving my squeeze page first. Once that is up and running, I will build my main website using Wordpress.org, and when that looks good I will transfer my domain name to the new website and cancel my old hosting. (I can't transfer my current website to another host, as it was built using my current host's proprietary templates, and they do not allow the files to be transfered.)

John, I know you use and recommend Dreamhost. Is the $8.95/month plan all I need, or do I need a higher plan? I understand I need SSL to accept credit cards, but do I need a unique IP address? Also, does anyone have any experience with Hostgator? I am probably going to go with Dreamhost, but I am still open to other suggestions. I already used my 2 week trial with Dreamhost some time ago, so I can't do any more experimenting with them unless I sign up.

One reason I am looking at Hostgator, is that they have 24/7 phone support, and Dreamhost support is by Email, with a 24 hour responce time. (Limited phone support, with 3 calls per month max is available for more $$)

Anything else I need to know before I jump from familiar, high priced territory into the unknown??!

What would a jam session with Gordon Lightfoot, Collective Soul, and Damien Rice sound like?

Greg,

You can always just use paypal and rely on their SSL certificate.  That way you've got a plug n play solution until you can really get into the bare bones of payment gateway on your own.

As far as dreamhost, If they offer unlimited domain hosting email addresses, that's all you need for now, my friend.

You can look into SSL down the line if you are considering a merchant account and payment gateway of your own.  But for now paypal will do the trick.  Plus they will let you bounce a new customer back to your own hosted "Thanks for your purchase" page after the sale.

Another thing is that dreamhost probably uses the cpanel interface which is super user-friendly and most likely has "Simple Scripts" for one-click installation of wordpress.

Thanks a million Steve!  I have a PayPal account, but I hadn't even thought about that meeting the requirements  I needed. This stuff seems so confusing at first, but it's really kind of like learning a new language....overwhelming at first, but easier to understand with each new word. Pretty soon I will be able to speak complete sentences! ;>0

Hi Greg

I'd like to wholeheartedly recomend Hostgator. Their support is awesome, the CPanel based controls have always worked flawlessly for me... really good product and company.

While I know a number of folks who use Dreamhost and have no complaints, I haven't been impressed with them. I had to deal with them when transferring a site for a client recently, and while their support was friendly and helpful, the problems we were having to contact them about were very strange and should not have been happening in the first place. I was left with the impression that they're not on top of maintaining their stuff. And you can't call them. You have to put in a ticket and wait for them to get back to you - which they did fairly promptly. But Hostgator has phone and chat support.

Thats my 2 cents. I have no affiliation with Hostgator other than happy customer.

Greg,

What you would want to do is go into your paypal and create a payment button.  You could set one up for every track, or every offer and just paste it right into your offer page.

When they click it, your subscriber will be bounced over to paypal's check-out page, where they complete the purchase securely.  Then after checkout they get bounced back to your site and you can deliver the goods.

However you may want to make the paypal button look differently to elicit a a different response, but the paypal logo will ad credibility, as far as security goes.

Thanks for all the great advise guys. I signed up with Hostgator, and so far their support has been outstanding! I have only used the "chat" support, but they have quickly answered every question. My squeeze page is now with them, and tomorrow I will start building a new website using wordpress.org. I have an unused domain name that I will use to build the new site, and when it is ready I will change it over to my current website's URL, and cancel the hosting I have right now. My hosting cost will then drop from $30 a month to $9.95. This is great! I can see some more websites in the future, now that they won't cost me anything extra except $10/year for the domain registration. Saving $$...that's a good thing!

Cool Greg,

HG support probably told you this already, but in your control panel there is a button for Quickinstall. Once you are on the Quickinstall page, find the wordpress button. It will install the latest wordpress in about 30 seconds. One thing: make sure youve created the admin user email address on your new domain before you install wp so you can get the password email. If you need help with any of the basic settings give a shout. There are lots of wordpress aficionados here.

Yeah, Ive used their chat support a lot and they always get me sorted out right away.

Cheers,
Daniel

Congrats on getting hosting Greg. I would have suggested Dreamhost just because I've been a happy customer for over 8 years and so my tutorials line up with what you see in your control panel. They actually do offer 24/7 chat support which I've been very happy with, but Hostgator is great as well and I'm sure you'll be very pleased with them. They use Cpanel which is different from what Dreamhost uses but it's similar enough that things come pretty close to lining up. And truth be told, for anyone who is new to this stuff, Cpanel is probably easier to use.

I'm sure it will be nice to be able to be able to create new sites for only $10 a year instead of $10 a month.

Hi guys,

I just wanted to add my two cents and say that I've been a happy customer of Hostgator for over a year now as well. I haven't had any issues and the one time I messed up a few of my own databases they were quick with the fix.

Hi guys,

Yeah, it was a real toss up for me between Dreamhost and Hostgator. The two reasons that made me go with Hostgator was that they have no set up fee, and 24 hour chat and phone support. Dreamhost wanted either a $49 setup fee, or pay a full years hosting in advance, and I seem to recall that you had to pay extra for limited phone support.

I did have some trouble getting my squeeze page transfered to Hostgator, mostly because I messed things up and also because my other hosting company was being a bit testy......the thanks I get after being a customer for 10 years! Anyway , the techs at Hostgator had everything taken care of in less than half the time they had promised. They also ask you to answer a very short survey after each chat or phone call. It seems that the techs pay scale is dependent on how satisfied the customers are! So far I have given them a top rating every time.

Next week I plan to start building my new website, after stocking up on a few 5ths of Pendleton to get me through the stressful parts!  Oh boyConfused

Hi Steve,

I dunno about the gallons.....probably would be a bit expensive, but I did hear about a cheap brand that does come in gallons, and also includes a "do it yourself" IV Kit. It also includes a few coupons for samples of Rogain for those bald spots caused by pulling out chunks of your hair. Shit. Do I really want to build another website? I may be calling out for help as this  week progresses!

I know this is an old thread but my question is related.

I'm taking the advice here and I'm going to go with hostgator. It looks like the Baby plan is all I need then or is there some thing I'm missing that would lead me to want the Business plan?

Thanks.

Hi Edna,

That's the plan I am using (The baby) at least I'm 99% sure it is......around $10 per month. It does everything I need so far. I have both my website http://www.gregparke.com and my squeeze page http://www.gregparkemusic.com on the plan with no problems.

Hostgator is really big on customer service. In fact, their employees pay scale depends on the feedback they get from customers. Every time I have called with a problem or a question, it got taken care of correctly, and right now!

I will check and make sure that is the plan I am using. If it isn't I'll come back to this post and let you know

Thanks for the reply Greg. The baby plan looks a little cheaper than that especially if you commit to a few years. It looks like it has all the features anyway.

(Oh and It is Enda and not Edna by the way. An Irish name!)

Enda.....cool! My apologies, and I do understand. My last name is Parke, but people always want to change it to Park, Parkes, or Parker. I did discover a fun comeback though. I just tell them (often from the stage over a microphone!) to spell my last name backwards. They usually don't forget it after that, and it is usually good for a laugh. Backwards, it's Ekrap! I was a volunteer fire chief and EMT for 15 years, and one day I noticed that my crew had hung a sign in the fire hall over my bunker gear that said "Chief Ekrap" I laughed my butt off!

No bother at all. It does bring up an idea I had about buying the domain name for your misspelled name and using it as a squeeze page (or redirecting it and giving a scolding to the mis-typerLaugh) Might be something to consider!
