Hey everybody

Nice to see some new members in the forum!

My request is kind of small potatoes compared to some of the other stuff in in this forum, but I could use some help. I finaly took a lot of what I have learned from MMM and this forum, and completely redid my website. I still need to clean up a few things (like the header background and cheesy video's!), and I am thinking about replacing the home page with a blog instead of just a welcome message. I also want to put up several videos, with each one having it's own page as John suggested in MMM for use with Twitter.

What I would like is some constructive critisism. When I look at my site, it just seems to be lacking something. Maybe I'm just rummy after two days of sitting at the computer! I am open to any suggestions or comments.

Here's the link: http://www.gregparke.com

What would a jam session with Gordon Lightfoot, Collective Soul, and Damien Rice sound like?

Check out Greg Parke and you’ll have a pretty good idea!

Hey Greg,

I have a few suggestions for you without making a ton of work (making websites sucks).

While I think it's cool that you have a music page with samples, I would suggest using just a squeeze page that sells the "sizzle" of your music and forces an opt-in.

OR... you could break out your microphone, record a short clip saying, "Hey, this is Greg Parke. Thanks for listening and make sure you get a few free tracks while you're here. Just fill out the form on the right side of the page and click the "Click here to Join button" and I'll send you a few free tracks."

Then you could edit them into your mp3 samples before and after each track you have in the top-scrolling playlist.

Anything you can do to make the call to action more prominent will definitely help.

I would also suggest testing different calls to action in your submit button. Things like, "Yes, I'd LOVE Some Free Music!" or "Send Me My FREE Tracks!"

Aesthetically, I would only suggest making the body background all black (keep your menu links white) and change the grey text area to white with black text. Same with area behind the opt-in box.

All this stuff can be tested of course, but you'd be amazed at how something like text-on-background colors will affect the success rate of your site, as far as visitor response.

Hope that helps a bit.

Hey Greg,

This is for your content site right? Separate from a squeeze page?

Assuming it is, I personally like smaller headers and a blog on the home page instead of a welcome message. I think it's all about consistent content updates (something I've been terrible about on my own music blog lately). I don't know that a welcome message buys you much these days. But that's just my opinion.

I think there might be some under utilized space in the header as well.

And if you're looking for any and all feedback, I think the blue might be a bit blah, against the black (just my opinion). You might benefit from having a designer lay a few things out for you, choose colors, fonts, etc. My designer has been a life saver. I usually try doing it myself first (spending days), and then give up and have my designer just redo it. I'm always happy I did. It never usually costs me more than $100 to have something laid out for me if I put it together. but as always, it's much more about the content then the color scheme.

Hope none of that comes off as negative. I definitely don't mean to be.

Steve's suggestions about the calls to action are great as well.

Thanks Guys....the blue goes away....today!

Yeah, this is my content site. My squeeze page has been up and running for a few months now and as I drive more traffic to it, it is getting results. I'm not going to mess with it right now! (http://www.gregparkemusic.com )

I have had a website for many years, and it really hasn't done much for me, as far as generating any serious income. One huge mistake was that you had to go to a separate sign up page to join my mailing list. I got almost no sign ups this way. What I have learned from MMM and this forum is about focusing on "call to action", and that is what I have tried to do with having my sign up form very prominently displayed on each page. I'm also going to dump the "welcome page" as you suggested, and replace it with a blog. Your right, welcome pages are just boring fluff

One thing I have noticed since I re-did my website about a week ago....I am getting google alerts almost every day related to different pages on my website, and when I check the tracking statistics for my site, I am getting traffic from places I have never noticed in the past. It looks like I am getting more traffic too. I'm waiting to see if my conversion rate goes up.

Once I get this site pretty much how I want it, I will most likely use it as a model to show a "pro" what I'm looking for, and pay them to make a better site, and switch to DreamHost (?) I just have too many irons in the fire right now to deal with that!

Also John, you can disregard my request in MMM for you to check out my website, since you already have! Thanks

If you're going the blog route, I'd recommend Wordpress.org.

If you're going wordpress.org, I've found a really flexible and easy to stylize theme called "Suffusion"

Just like John, I also usually layout and tweak my own sites, but really just end up thinking that doing web design pretty much blows. So this time I didn't feel like dicking around with all that and the "Suffusion" them is pretty darned easy to use, if you ask me.

Rock it out!

OK, I went to wordpress, and really did some snooping around, and you're right, it's great! I've already started working on a new website, and as things progress I probably will turn it over to a pro for final tweaking if I get in over my head. But for now it looks pretty straight forward.

I'm getting tons of extremely useful info from MMM and this forum. Thanks again everybody, and to you John, for starting this whole thing!

Heeeyahhhh! Arrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhh BLLLEEEEeeaahhh....................Ok, I am now 2 full days, (starting at 5:00 am the first day, 6:30 am the second) tearing into Wordpress. Jesus F'n Keeeeriiiist!! Themes, plugins, headers, "formats not allowed", widgets that don't appear when they should, plugins that sort of work...sometimes, plugins that never work...until....

But I am learning, and I will prevail! Wordpress is pretty incredible, I have to admit. Come hell or high water, I WILL have a new website soon! I think my old website knows that it's days are numbered, and it is kind of sad. We've been together for over ten years. But, ten years is a very long time in computer years, so the technology that built my old website is very outdated, even though Hostbaby (my current host) just revamped and updated almost everything they offer.

Anyway, other than blowing off a little steam, I also wanted to ask if anyone knows of any really good Wordpress themes that are geared for musicians? I have tried Twenty 11, (the current default theme) Paraclub, Suffusion, and several others. Suffusion has a lot of good points, but it has issues with widgets. Paraclub has too much fluff to wade through, and I am having a hard time finding any theme that will allow me to upload a custom header that includes both an image and text. (I was using "Gimp" and an old version of "Microsoft Picture It" to build custom headers. The Wordpress themes I have tried so far hates them both!)

So, John, I'm hoping that you remember what Wordpress theme was used to build your website, because a lot of what I am trying to do seems to work on your site! I'm also open to anything anybody else has to offer related to wordpress!

Oh yeah, one more thing.....Steve, I haven't used the IV kit yet, but I think I may have a few bald spots on my head!

Greg,

I'm using suffusion and hve not had any issues with widgets. One thing that can be confusing about it though is the sidebar set-up. Going off of memory I think there are 3 or 4 different sidebar formats and that may be where you are having issues.

Also, I also use gimp for graphics and have not had any issues loading custom headers.

Specifically, what problems are you having? Usually it's something as simple to overlook as css syntax. Let me know what issues you are having in detail and I'll see if I can't help you troubleshoot.

Is the header not showing... or showing in the wrong place (cut-off on one side, partially repeating)?

Let me know, bud. I hate to see you spend so much time on something that may not be the most effective use of your time.

Hey Steve, thanks for the reply!

Here's some of the problems I'm having:

Whenever I try to upload anything I've done with Gimp or Picture It, I get a message stating that those types of formats are not allowed for security reasons. I made a custom header with a photo and text, but I finally just decided to do away with a custom header. My name does appear at the top of the page, and I was able to put a photo in with my first blog under where the header should have been.

I want my site to look like a website, not a blog. I don't want everything to have a space for people to comment on, show the time and date that each entry was written, show the words "permalink" "uncatagorized" "edit" and "add comments" above each post.

There seems to be a lot of junk in the widget areas that I can't get rid of that came with the theme: Catagories, links, archives etc.

At one point, I had my Aweber webform installed in the sidebar, but somehow it disappeared. I know how to grab the HTML from Aweber, but I can't seem to find the proper widget section to re-install it.

And…….I would prefer to not have a hangover tomorrow, but after 2 days of this, it might happen!

OOOOkaaayyyyyyyyy, progress!

I got my Aweber form re-installed, and got all the junk cleared out of the widget area. Now if I can just get the main body cleaned up, I'll be ready to face the next batch of problems! Right now, I'm working with Suffusion, and the appearence of the site is pretty good, I think. I still might try some other themes later, or maybe not?

One other problem I'm having is putting up a directory to other pages on the website. Any ideas?

Hey Greg,

I use Thesis, but it costs money and I would stay away from it. They use something called "hooks" instead of straight html and while everyone insist it's easier, it makes my head hurt. With that said, the theme is constantly updated whenever there are changes out there that the theme doesn't support and they also have a support forum which is invaluable.

For that reason I personally like paid themes. But at this stage you don't need to spend any more money.

If you're liking the theme that Steve said he uses then you might try that because at least you'll have someone to bounce questions off of.

I'd also recommend you get familiar with the wordpress support forum. That really helped me in the beginning and if the theme is popular then chances are there is a good deal of discussion specific to your theme.

But of course we're here to help as well. I just don't personally know anything about the specifics of a theme I don't use.

Greg.

Yes, you want to use an xml sitemap plugin. Let me see which one I'm using.

Glad you brought this up because it will help significantly with SEO and pay per click.

Here's the one I use to archive a sitemap/directory listing:

Dagon Designs Sitemap Generator Plugin

Hope that's what you meant.

Also, what you said about not being able to remove things from your sidebar…

Usually this shit is default, but when you actually go in and add something to the sidebar, they disappear. That's just from memory though and may not necessarily be true.

I'm also fairly sure that Suffusion allows you to edit out the post date.

One other thing you try which will definitely work is to create a new new page template in the "Appearance" editor.

What you want to do is go to the current page template (page.php), copy the entire thing, create a new page template, paste the old code in there and then edit out the things you don't want (comments, sidebar, postdate, etc.)

Save the template and everytime you want to add a page that isn't blog-like, just select the template you created as the page's template and it will look just as you planned every time.

Regarding your graphics issue. Are you sure you aren't accidentally trying to upload a gimp xcf file? I would try saving your files as a .gif or .png for your header graphic. .jpg should also work.

I've never had an issue with the file type being a security issue unless, like I said, you are accidentally uploading an xcf file.

A great way to check your work (in firefox browser) is to get the firbug add-on for firefox. This will let you inspect elements of your page. When you activate firebug, you can click on the header box. On the right side of firebug, you should see the css for the header div. If no image path is showing as an attribute

.header {background-image:url('<a href="http://yoursite.com/imagepath......" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://yoursite.com/imagepath....../a>);}

… then you have made a mistake in your syntax and it may say, "no style types".

Shit. Now I know what you meant about info overload for this month's coaching call. One bite at a time… fire-up the old IV 😉

Hey John and Steve, thanks so much for the info! I have been able to figure out some of this stuff since my last post, and I'm thinking that some of the problems might be solved just by finding a theme that will work with what I want to do. From what I have found, at least so far, most of the wordpress themes are heavily blog oriented, and take a fair amount of manipulating to make them work very well as a website. I did find a few paid themes that are geared for musicians websites, and if all else fails I may go that route down the road, but I am getting more confident with every theme and website that I destroy....er, I mean build!

I have never really gone into changing html before, so I really don't have a clue what I am doing, but I may give it a shot. I didn't have a clue how to fix the brakes on my first car either, but I must have figured it out, because the car still stopped, eventually!

Also about 2:00am last night, I gave up on the IV, and just tossed the cap into the garbageConfusedEmbarassedLaughYell!

OK, here is my current problem, and it seems consistant no matter what theme I use.

Using Johns website as an example: At the top of the page is what appears to be a header with Johns name. Below that is a directory to other pages on the website. I'm now having only minor glitches getting any of this done with my website, and they are usually easy to fix. I can also get any widgets I need placed in various places, mostly on the right side of the page. Now for the problem area…

Still using Johns page as an example, directly below the directory to other pages, is an area with a photo of John and text stating "The official website of John Oszajca". This appears to be a permanet part of the page, and directly below this section is where the blog section starts.

Every wordpress theme that I have tried treats everything below the main header as a blog. This wouldn't be so bad, except for the fact that any new blog entries show up at the top of the blog section, and move the previous post down one level. Is there anyway to keep the first blog post always on top, or better yet, insert some sort of "sub header" with a photo and text just above the blog area?

This is about the only thing that is holding me back at the moment. I have tried tons of themes, and if I can find a way to fix this, I will probably stay with the theme "Suffusion", as Steve has suggested.

Also Steve....I was trying to upload a header I made using Gimp as a "XCF" file, so I'll bet that was the problem. I'll convert it and try again, even though I probably won't stay with that header I originaly made. Good to know though, thanks!

So, to put it simply, I would like my home page to be: Header, page directory, sub header, blog, with widgets in a right side sidebar. 2nd choice would be Header, subheader, blog, with page directory on left, widgets on right.

Greg,

he Items that get listed in your site directory are "PAGES". Your concern seems to be that the first page is showing a summary of "POSTS" which are different from page.

Wordpress gives you the option of what shows when people enter your regular domain. http://www.yoursite.com.

Your options are "Recent Posts" or "Static Page" So if you are trying to give a Greg Parke Overview type squeeze page, then you need to set this to "Static Page" and tell wordpress which page to present.

Go to: Settings>>Reading Select "Static Page" Highlight "Front Page" and choose your squeeze page from the list.
If your desired page is not on the list, do what suggested earlier making a new page template, remove the blog elements you want removed and paste the html from your squeeze page into the template.

Then Create new page, give it a title and use the new template as the page's template. Set it to static and select this page from the list.

To have things show in your site directory, they need to be saved as PAGES, not POSTS. You can test this by creating a page called test and watch how wordpress automatically puts "Test" in your navigation.

Aahhh, Ok! So a Static page always remains the same? But that would mean I couldn't also have a blog on the lower half of the page? I will definitely look into what you suggested and try it out. Your suggestions have been very helpful so far!

You may have already solved a big part of my problem already though. By converting my header that I made with Gimp from a XCF file to a PNG file as you suggested, I was able to upload it. I also found out how to make the header much larger, so I can do away with my first preference of header, page directory, subheader, blog. With the larger header I am able to include a pretty good sized photo and my name, so I can do away with the sub header idea and just go with header, directory, blog.

My site is not ready to go public yet, but if you want to see how it looks so far go to http://test.gregparkemusic.com The header and blog posts are something I just threw up there and will be re-done for the final version.

Thanks so much Steve. I would definitely be shopping for a hair piece, and be extremely hungover without your help! You too, John!
