Hi,
I just joined the Insider's Circle today! Thank you all for being so awesome. I am hosting my site through bluehost and wanted to add a feature where people could comment on my homepage, blog page, etc., so I did the one click install of WordPress from my Control Panel.
I am trying to upload a high quality video to my Wordpress blog and it has a limit of 10MB.....is there a way to change that? If not, how do you compress your video enough for it not to pixelate but be less than 10MB?
Also, I am trying to install the FB, Google +, Twitter, Tumblr, embed FB comments widgets (like the ones John has on his home page) but there are so many options...does anyone know the name/title of that widget? I've tried several and they align themselves on the page strangely.
Lastly, I just read the post on wordpress.com vs. .org - with this install, I will be able to design this page to fit within the look of my site, right?
Thank you so much!
Kat

Hi Kat,
In my experience, it is much easier to post your vids on YouTube, and then embed them into your website. Very easy to do, and from what I have read, this assures that your video will be compatable with all browsers. To embed your video from YouTube, just look for the tab "embed this video" on the YouTube page, then follow the instructions that pop up. I'm not sure if you can do this with a "high quality" video like you mentioned, you might have to convert it to a different format for YouTube. The upside is that your webpage will probably load a lot faster, which is important! People tend to not wait for slow loading pages, and large video files often are very slow to load.
I'm not a real computer whiz, so someone else might know of a better way to do this!
What would a jam session with Gordon Lightfoot, Collective Soul, and Damien Rice sound like?
Check out Greg Parke and you’ll have a pretty good idea!
Kat,
Hi Steve Rodgers here…
I'm also a bluehoster. Regardless, you can do what you're trying to do with the high quality vid quite simply. However I will caution you that, you can mess up your whole site if you are not careful!
What you want to do is locate a file called php.ini in your domain folder
publichtml>>yourdomain>> php.ini
It's a long list of stuff, but you should be able to find upload limits for both bluehost and wordpress and increase them to something like 350mb or whatever your video is.
Again, be careful though. php.ini is a really important file to how your site functions and you don't want to mess with it, but you can make this simple edit to it and do what you are trying to do.
Another thing though, is that you can use a FTP program like Filezilla and just drag and drop your file regardless of size, but I think you are trying to use the uploader into wordpress' media folder, in which case php.ini will do the trick.

hi Kat!!!!
Filezilla is easy. Thats what i use.

Good to have you hear Kat.
In my opinion... You shouldn't mess with the uploader for videos at all. I would host them on youtube or vimeo, or if you want to host it privately, get an Amazon S3 account. You pay as you and it's crazy cheap hosting for big files. Usually my bills are under $5 and I get a lot of traffic. The biggest bill I ever had for a month was $40 and that was wen I was sharing an hour and a half long video file with 8000 people. It's a pain to set up, but once up it's really easy. You just upload the videos from your browser and then use a video player plugin to display them in wordpress. The only downside is that they are not mobile friendly. I also started using Easy Video Player. It's mobile friendly and a tad more intuitive, but it costs about $300.
But really, vimeo or youtube should take care of you. One nice thing about vimeo is that people are less used to seeing it and it doesn't have that "it's on youtube" low rent kinda feeling.
Here is a list of all the plugins I am using:
Comment Reply Notification
Audio player
Facebook Comments for WordPress
FLV Embed
Page Expiration Robot
Sharecount for Facebook
SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam
TweetMeme Retweet Button
Widget Logic
WordPress.com Stats
WP-Stats-Dashboard
Google +1 Button
Some of them take some configuration to make them display the way you want them to.
And yes, to answer your original question, you can design it to look however you want.

Hi Kat,
There's some great answers here already. Uploading your videos via FTP with Filezilla is easy, or uploading to Youtube and embedding is easy as well. There are also sites like Screencast.com that allow you to have a few free GBs of storage and allows you to easily embed and share video by email or embedding them into your website.
If you do go the Youtube route and want to make it slightly less "low rent" (as John puts it), you can:
Either way you decide to go, there are several options for you to try out.
Thanks so much for taking the time to reply everyone - I really appreciate it! I am still figuring out how to use the Mastermind Forum, so I only just saw your responses. I tried to reply to you each individually to say thank you, but so far I only see how to reply to the topic. Love all of your signatures...nicely done. and Hi Dean!! So great to see you in here!
Hey Kat,
Not sure how you're making out with uploading your video to Wordpress or not, but yesterday Wordpress 3.3 went live and it looks like they updated the minimum file upload to 64mbs.
(Quoting from the media upload screen: "Maximum upload file size: 64MB").
Hope this helps!

thank you mike! i just embedded the youtube!
That's probably the better choice - no upload issues and zero bandwidth concerns either!
Hey Kat, there is a new video in the rules and forum tips forum. It shows you how to subscribe to topics and a few other things. There is a private message option as well at the top of each comment, where it says "send pm". But people need to have the notification on to be alerted.
